IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
You know, Adrian was supposed to be off duty. She was supposed to be on break right now - ideally wasting her entire paycheck drinking daquiris on the beach until the sun went down. Instead she was here... in a crowded city doing an unrealistic mission with someone she did not want to be around. Why? To prove a point and preserve her honor. The thought of it made the woman sigh in exasperation. It actually made her angry not only at the situation but also at herself for actually going through with it up to this point. At the least they were no longer holding hands in their strange showing of competition.
Looking over at the man that had come with her, she wondered if there was some other plan rather than just going around asking people if they had seen the criminals from the mission file. While Adrian had no idea what rank Rory held, she figured it couldn't have been anything high. He did not even know where to start at first. Therefore this was going to turn out to be a waste of time... but at the very least she could keep saying he was incompetent and she would not be obligated to allow him to buy her drinks. Who knows what chaos would spawn from that?
Before going further into the city she did want to make one thing clear. You get one chance. If this day ends and we don't capture one of the three then it's over." She placed a hand at her hip and huffed slightly, waiting for some response to know he acknowledge it. Then you'll have to admit you're incompetent and apologize to the rest of the rangers at headquarters." Why apologize? Because even if he denied it, he was probably causing issues for all the rangers - herself included but that was a given - and he needed to take some responsibility for that.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]it was over before it even started. that was what he thought anyways, going into jubilife with the sole intention of making the female's day even more miserable than it already has been. there was no way he was arresting a wanted criminal, let alone finding one to even begin with. but still, he'd keep his confident cocky demeanor as they entered the city. a quick stop at the infirmary at hq and his wound was patched up, punch courtesy of the female.[break][break]
"one chance," he repeated. the second part of what she said did not sit very well with him, making him raise an eyebrow at. there was no way he was going to publicly apologize, that would just make him look bad, more than he already did. "fine." no arguments because he wasn't going to apologize. probably. it all depends on how this day played out. turning back to the female he'd stick out a hand in jest, a playful smirk on his face as he spoke. "you sure you don't want to hold hands?"[break][break]
he started to walk forward before she could make a move to punch him, if that was what she wanted to do. he was wearing his ranger uniform, though it was missing the stylus and the badge, which he hoped she would not notice. it would be hard though, since he never usually clipped the badge on his belt anyways. the lack of stylus however might be a problem. in his jacket were three separate pictures of each individual criminal.[break][break]
"i'm going to ask you something," he chimed, eyes shifting back and forth between the streets in front and her. "do you know how to have fun?" it was a simple question based on a simple observation. she appeared to be someone who was much too invested in her work, or at least that was what it looked like. or maybe it was just him she was cold to. either way he stood behind his question.[break][break]
and to prove that he was here to do the mission as well a hand would reach out to grab a random stranger by the arm, stopping them in their tracks as he pulled out the pictures. he nonchalantly flipped through them, showing all there to the person before asking, "seen any of them around?" though his attention was mostly fixed on the girl still.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
At the very least he understood he only had the day to actually 'prove' his worth to her. Even going as far to repeat it for enunciation. The woman huffed to herself regardless as they walked down the street. Rory would make a comment about holding hands and in that instant the woman wanted to throw another punch at the man's face, her fingers twitching as she held back her reflex to do so. At least he was smart enough to walk ahead faster, knowing that was the line of thought Adrian went for. Still it did not mean he was safe, seeing that smirk on his face keeping that idea in the back of her head.
The first thing that Adrian noticed was that Rory chose to go in his full ranger gear. Which was fine an all as this was a mission but she thought that, if they were going to be serious and all, that being a bit more discrete did not hurt here. In turn Adrian was also dressed in her ranger gear, minus that hat she always wore on patrol to hide her hair. She didn't wear it today for the sake of ease on both fronts. Her badge was also usually located on her belt with her pokeballs - which also helped identify her rank. When the first set off she was distracted by doing the prep work for the failure of a mission that she did not notice Rory's lack of badge. She would soon, once she became curious of his rank, but not yet.
Mostly because he distracted her again with more idle chatter. As he chimed in to propose a question to her, she folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes warily at the man. She'd keep this pose as they walked down the street, even as the question was asked. The only difference then was that the woman sighed afterwards. The amber haired woman watched as he also grabbed someone random on the street and began shifting through the photos of their targets and would wait until the questioning was over and they were out of earshot before responding. "Apparently not since I'm here with you," she replied curtly. Not untrue. She had no intention of expanding on that point further however.
To be fair she didn't expect Rory to actually try to question people. His method of actually reaching out and grabbing someone on the street rather than peacefully walking up and asking could have easily been caused an issue. "Didn't they teach you anything in training? Are you a cadet or something?" Not that she could really talk. She was a cadet a month or so ago - but no one had to know that.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]the first person didn't take kindly to him grabbing them by the arm, basically stopping them in the middle of the street to interrogate them. but they obliged anyways, shaking their heads and whispering profanities as they walked off. rory shrugged his shoulders, not minding the lack of results. back into the pocket the pictures went, head turning to face her before chuckling. "no, you're not having fun with me because we're on a mission together." he clarified. mind would wander back to the hq for their initial conversation. "i'm sure if we were sat in a bar right now things would be much different." [break][break]
when she questioned his rank his hand instinctively shifted towards his belt where his badge normally was, but when he realized his movements might have been a bit suspicious he'd turn his entire body away, hand reaching out to grab yet another passerby. pictures out, flicker through, nothing.[break][break]
"does it matter?" he questioned, not keen on revealing his true rank; a mere sergeant. he felt like he deserved better, deserved more. but past events would tell otherwise. "what did they teach you?" he turned to her again, careful to angle himself to avoid any more suspicion with the badge. "please, show me how it's done," he scoffed, arm extending out to hold the three photographs in front of her, basically instructing her to take it from him.[break][break]

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
The unnecessary clarification he gave caused Adrian to roll her eyes. "If I were sitting at a bar with you I'd have gone mad." Really, Adrian still believe she had gone mad when she actually agreed to go out on a mission with him in the first place. After watching the interaction with the stranger, it went about as what was to be expected and Adrian shook her head in shame. It would be been surprising if they reacted otherwise. Watching him like a hawk, the woman noticed his strange movements. Why would he turn is entire body away from her like that? Instead of taking out his badge or responding to her he snatched another innocent bystander on the street for questioning. She'd squint at the reaction and even more so when he would eventually turned his attention back to her.
"Of course it matters," the woman responded as she briefly threw her hands in the air with an exasperated tone. "If you haven't even prove yourself by climbing up to sergeant to then why are we even here?" Lowering her hands to place them at the temples of her head, she thought for a moment. This situation was getting worse and worse. Since he didn't deny to her previous statement then Adrian automatically assumed she was correct in her statement. Even if he denied it at this point she wouldn't believe him without proof.
Reeling from the revelation as Rory extended the photos to her, the woman scoffed. Recovering a bit she shook her head. Adrian knew that her social skills were not great. After all, she did kind of punch Rory in the face earlier. She didn't believe in not saying certain things in order to preserve one's feelings either. While she was tempted to do as he said, she wasn't going to do it without at least making him feel terrible first and hopefully admit defeat. "Oh so are you giving up? What happened to proving yourself?"
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]he won't lie and say he wasn't getting a bit annoyed at the constant questioning of his abilities, so much so that he would now walk up to the girl, eyes staring into hers as if challenging her. "alright. i'm a sergeant, and i would have been an elite by now if i wasn't constantly fucking around with pretty girls like yourself." still, with no badge to prove it he could only hope that she'd take his word for it. his reasoning for not becoming an elite was somewhat true; it was either the girls, the booze, or the late nights that made him mess up missions.[break][break]
again with the proving himself bullshit. alright, he'll bite, he'll take the bait. falling so eloquently for her taunts a singular hand would again stick out and grab a random person by the shoulder, dragging them to a halt. his eyes would not avert away from the girl's, pretty much ignoring the stranger he stopped as another hand would carelessly show the three different pictures all at once.[break][break]
"you seen any of these criminals lately?" he asked.

Dressed well and about the streets, Adrien Arkwright was on his own this day, having a few albeit annoying errands to run in the city. Jubilife City wasn't a personal favorite although it did have some stores and junk which Leah was into. And so here he was in the shopping district, a retail bag held in one hand packed with things he could only hope were what she wanted from the dozen pictures and lists he had to search through.
Alas the stupid eyepatch was a hinderance.
Apart from moving his head around more, depth perception was another factor he had to deal with, with being unable to grab onto things the first time around. A sigh escaped his lips as he'd stop by the next store and glanced at it with disinterest. He'd take a step forward but just then would a hand on his shoulder pulled him back and stopped him in his tracks. "Eh?" Adrien would turn and three photographs were immediately shoved in his face.
Didn't help that the fucking eyepatch made things difficult again.
Taking a step back the Arkwright male would instantly recognize all three; best friend, crazy bitch and dead meat. There was no mistaking that, all three were closely linked to himself. But then came the question. Who? And why? The dark haired male would tilt his head to the side to spot the person behind it, immediately registering the face. "Rory?" He'd cock a brow and ask with adequate surprise, eyes then shifting to his accomplice, his good eye widening in disbelief. "And Mastry?," Of all the people. A smile crept on his lips.
"Why're you here?" He'd ask the redhead, Rory's presence completely ignored.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Flattery was amidst the anger that spewed from Rory's mouth. Adrian did was she normally did and rolled her eyes at the statement, "Likely story." Her hands unraveled from across her chest and now the right hand rested at her hip as she looked Rory directly in the eye. "Show me your badge then hotshot." She wasn't going to back down and if he wasn't then he'd better have a damn good reason. That said it didn't matter either way as once again Rory rudely grabbed another person due to her provocation much to her dismay. As ironic as it sounded the woman wished that he would at least try to be civil towards the civilians.
While Rory chose to keep eye contact with her, Adrian had shifted her's to the person he had pulled. Looking at him initially there was a vague familiarity that clicked in her mind. The face looked familiar however the eyepatch threw her off somewhat. The instant he spoke, it felt like her heart dropped to the floor as she held back her cringing. "Oh gods, it's you," she said impulsively with a seething tone as her mind finally identified him. She didn’t even say his name. What were the fucking odds? On the job too? This day was going downhill from bad to worse in the fastest way possible.
The smile that appeared on Adrien’s face didn’t help either. It was like he knew and was taunting her. This interaction likely wasn’t going to help her case against Rory. Nevertheless, she exhaled a low aggravated breath as she walked over to Rory’s side, ignoring him in favor of addressing the other person that grated her nerves. "To prove a point," she responded swiftly before motioning him back to the pictures in Rory’s hands. The scowl on her face contrasted the smile on Adrien's. "Know anything about these three or not?"
Again, was not helping her case.
She figured that Arkwright wouldn’t know anything about the three and that this was merely a formality at this point since the conversation about it was already started. She was honestly surprised to see him out and about with what looked to be shopping bags considering he was supposedly rich. Either way that eyepatch looked stupid and she would question it if only because her eyes kept getting distracted by it. "And what's with the eyepatch?" Maybe that was the new trend with twelve year olds. Pirates were apparently popular now with kids.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]should he not have grabbed that stranger off the street he would have gotten into trouble there with the girl, the badge still missing. luckily the appearance of the stranger warranted a distraction, but it wasn't just a stranger. when his name was called out he'd turn his head. it took him a few seconds to recognize who it was but when he did a scoff would escape his lips. "fucking adrien," he greeted.[break][break]
the two were acquainted, mostly through the nights of drinking and closing down bars, but it seemed like the man was acquainted with adrian as well. "you guys know each other?" he asked, a smile on his lips at the coincidence. he didn't even notice the eyepatch until the girl pointed it out. so much for good observation skills. "nice eyepatch," he laughed, showing little to no sympathy for whatever happened. eyes would then travel downwards to the bags adrien was carrying, and another snarky comment would come from the ranger. "girl problems?" he gestured at the bag, smirk prominent on his face.[break][break]
but even then he still noticed how attentive adrien was to the girl, seemingly ignoring his presence. it was nothing short of expected, rory would've done the same should the roles be reversed. it was what he knew adrien to be good at, their nights at the bar usually ended the same way. "one second," he muttered to the girl, keeping the photos back into his jacket. with a hand still on the man's shoulder he'd take a step forward, separating himself and adrien from her for a moment, a respectable distance between them as he whispered to the man.[break][break]
"don't you fucking dare. i've put in too much effort to have you swoop in," he whispered, voice both serious yet playful in a way. and with that he'd casually rotate his body to face the girl, giving adrien a good strong pat on the back as he spoke. "so how do you two know each other?" he asked.

"Oh gods, it's you,"
Adrien had to muster all he had to hold back a laugh when she blurted out those words and while he was able to keep from chuckling at that comment, the Arkwright couldn't help but let a shit-eating grin surface on his lips. "Heeeey. Yeah, we're close friends~" While eyes didn't divert themselves from Adrian, he did acknowledge Rory's greeting and question rather casually, the smirk growing larger as he introduced himself as her 'close friend'. He wouldn't be surprised if she tried to punch him right then and there.
To prove a point she said and it was then that Adrien paused for a moment and let the facts sink in. Rory was a ranger. And then the photographs and Adrian questions. Oh. Oh crap. His smile lessened. She was another ranger. Why was everyone he ever got cozy with a fucking ranger? The universe was against him, wasn't it? Eyes lowered to the bags when Rory gestured towards them, a sigh escaping shortly after. "Sister problems,"
Adrien cleared his throat and moved onto more important matters. "And uhm, I do. All three are--" Indifferent eyes would scan all three pictures wondering under which rock did these two crawled out of. A lot had happened over the last few months, with Liam Summer's criminal activity on the rise. He'd raise a finger and was about to elaborate when Rory would toss an arm over his shoulder and pull him away for a second.
"What? " He'd narrow his eyes as hear the man out, a scoff escaping as it all became to clear. "Yeah, good luck with that," Sarcasm dripped from his words as he whispered back, his encounters with Mastry making things all too certain. But even then, Adrien who was as competitive as ever, would take it as a challenge if only to spite both of them.
Returning to the topic on hand, Adrien would refocus on the woman. "In Amity park. I set her on fire," Spoken ever so nonchalantly, no elaboration whatsoever spared. Rory was free to make whatever sense he wanted from that line. "As for the eyepatch..." He'd raise his hand to pull it off his eye, bruising evident about it and while his eye itself seemed perfectly fine - his vision was not.
"Liam Summers gifted it to me. The very same who murdered my grandfather," He'd set the eyepatch back and smile, albeit a blank one. There was no happiness in recalling the Arkwright head's death.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
If Adrian wasn't on the job she would have punched Arkwright in his good eye. Her right hand indicated as much as her fingers balled into a fist at her side. It was so unfortunate that she had to show restraint, especially with that grin he wore on his face. A similar grin appearing on Rory's face from her peripheral vision, her brow furrowed from the increased annoyance. "I hate you with a burning passion," she'd retort to Adrien's statement to disprove what he was saying. She didn't even appear to notice Rory's initial reaction to encountering Adrien.
Her emerald irises shifted back down to the bags held by the Arkwright as they were acknowledged by both men. That didn't matter right now and she'd shoot a brief glare at Rory, but would keep a mental note about the apparent sister the man had. If she was anything like the brother, Adrian would have to lose all faith in humanity. When the topic at hand sounded like it was finally going to be addressed - Rory interrupted to pull Adrien to the side which earned him another glare, a full blown glare at that. "Take all day if you want. Please," while it sounded somewhat sarcastic it was also said in moderate earnest as she watched the two break away. It would save her some trouble if they had. That said whatever they were speaking about did not take long at all as they were turned back to her sooner rather than later.
Mentally Adrian juggled her thoughts. She wasn't sure whether to be pleased at the potential lead or disturbed by the fact they had one. That said the information to be provided was interrupted and the woman wouldn't be surprised if Arkwright tried to dangle it in front of her face to make fun of her. As the duo had finished whatever it was they were talking about, instead of jumping back to the mission at hand, he started small talk with a stupid inconsequential question. She felt no need to answer the question but gave a low, barely audible growl when Adrien answered it. The injury he was speaking of was covered with bandages and hidden beneath the sleeve of her ranger jacket. At the mention of it she unconsciously moved the arm back behind her despite knowing it was covered up and there was no need.
Then Adrien removed the eyepatch and once more Adrian's attention was shifted to that spot. His eye looked fine but the bruising was what caught her attention. This wasn't a normal case of being punched in the eye either. After it was explained the woman bit her tongue again to stop from making a snarky remark. This was serious and she knew that. Yet somehow she had a hard time digesting the information from the twelve year old himself as she watched him smile. "... Sorry for your loss," was the first thing she said which actually sounded sincere from the usually angry woman. Adrian was never good at handling death and dealing with those who have lost. This was especially true for those who had died of unnatural causes. Regardless it was more of a lead then they had before though Adrian assumed that the murder was already reported and Arkwright was interrogated. Still since they didn't have that information, she'd ask. "Where did this happen?" Not bothering to ask how long ago this was, she knew it was between the time they met in Amity Square and now which was enough.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]"i'm serious, you fuck," he replied. he recognized the sarcasm, and all of this was just playful banter between the two, really, nothing new. he took what he said literally and imagined the girl on fire, the thought proving rather hilarious as a chuckle escaped his lips. though that was quickly silenced when the topic shifted onto the eyepatch and the injury, stepping away from the man so he could get a good view of the eye.[break][break]
it looked fine for the most part, except for the bruise. he was about to make a snide comment about it but was stopped when the explanation came. rory was not good with handling his emotions, preferring to keep them bottled up, drown them with alcohol. the only emotion he was familiar with was anger, and that came out like once every few days. he's never experienced loss before nor does he know how to handle it. so he just stood there, hands in his pockets as he struggled to find the words to say.[break][break]
luckily the girl was there to save him from the silence, though he did not like the new mood that hung in the air. the mission didn't even occur to him anymore. "how did you know it was him?" he piped up, seemingly out of nowhere. that duration of silence where he didn't speak just now was unusual of him, normally full of words and shit to say. instead of saying more of nothing he walked over to the man before giving him a much softer pat on the back than before.[break][break]
Post by adrien arkwright on Aug 15, 2016 18:22:25 GMT
Fists balled although the predicted strike to the face never came, her words however enough to have his smile widen. Adrien would snap his head to the male ranger besides him and grinned. "It's love. She's just confused~" The man would brush past it like it was no big deal and it truly wasn't seeing how it was all in jest. Of course, Rory probably didn't know that.
And then came the dreaded pause when he spoke of his grandfather, Adrien instinctively and immediately reaching for his phone to slide through messages, diverting his focus away from them and towards his phone. Ever so nonchalantly, the two would be deliberately ignored, just a simple nod offered as he held the phone in one hand and kept reading through unread notifications. "Catacombs. Celestic..." Short mumbles that were barely audible as he gazed through his phone.
In one way it let the awkwardness pass and in the other, he'd use it as a way to evade their questions. He despised Liam to the core but he wasn't stupid enough to give out information that could contradict himself in the future or prove to put his possible undercover in jeopardy. "Somewhere..." A single worded answer to Rory's question as well, before Adrien let a moment pass and then looked up from his phone and at the two.
"Well, Is that all? You'll definitely not find any of them in Jubilife for sure. "

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
The atmosphere became awkward. That was a fact that cannot be denied as both rangers gave their attention to Adrien. While they both posed questions, neither of them were answered clearly as his attention went straight down to his phone. This looked familiar to the ginger as she watched his movements. A common flight response when someone did not want to think about something and distracting themselves. Adrian knew because she had done something similar before. Something was said eventually but Adrian couldn't make out what he was saying and that annoyed her. She'd look over to Rory to see how he was reacting and shockingly he was not as exuberant compared to when they first began this mission. Death was never a good subject.
The woman expected that he would come around and actually say something. Anything of relevance. When all they got was a single vague word, the only one clearly spoke, Adrian's sympathy for the man faded. They weren't friends so she did not expect him to spill his sorrows onto her lap. She wouldn't want him to. When she asked something though she did expect an answer told to her outright. "Say that again?" the volume of her voice increasing as if to make him speak louder in turn. While her tone was aggressive her body language remained rather placid considering the circumstances, as if her subconscious was preventing her from doing anything too tense. That did not stop her voice though.
Adrien was noticeably hiding something in her eyes. Nothing showed this more than when Arkwright stated firmly they would not find the three in Jubilife. While it might have looked different for Rory, Adrian did not take kindly to withholding of information. "Arkwright, what are you hiding? We need this information." Her voice was firm and she glanced to Rory to assist as well. From what little interaction she witnessed, they seemed to be friends and with how the two had been interacting previously it might have been ironically better if Rory took the reins. If he could manage it. If not Adrian would try one more thing. "What is it you want?" Another ditch effort.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]eyes would follow the man's hand as arkwright reached for his phone, all of his attention now diverted onto the phone. he recognized what it was; it was a distraction to avoid talking about the grandfather and anything involving him. he understood it all too well, he'd often do the same when situations turned sour or when he needed to avoid unwanted feelings. the awkward topic of death brought that side out in people, he guessed.[break][break]
the ranger had no further questions for the man, should he want to leave he would allow him to. but the girl had other ideas, adrian speaking up with a much stronger voice than before to ask arkwright to repeat himself. then more questions would come, and for a moment it felt like arkwright was a criminal being interrogated. what she said did latch onto him though; he understood the severity of the situation and how serious adrian was. what started out as a day to annoy her has changed now that there is actual plausible information right at their fingertips.[break][break]
he'd look over at adrian in time to see her glance at him as if asking for help. while rory and arkwright weren't the closest of friends, they were well acquainted and probably a bit more than arkwright was with the girl. "adrien," his voice called out to the man, asking for his attention. "he's a criminal. we need that information," he pleaded. should the man deny answers there was always the option of arresting him for obstruction of justice, though he was sure that charge won't stick around long, especially not when arkwright could afford the best of lawyers.[break][break]
but it didn't reach that point just yet, and he wouldn't allow it to if he could help it. it was then that he realized he probably wasn't going to get anything out of arkwright under these circumstances, so he tried another approach. "there's a bar not too far down. drinks on me, if you want," he voiced his offer to adrien specifically, a hand instinctively raising to act as barrier between him and the girl just in case she had any ideas.
