major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
Matt looked down at his broken arm, the cast as red as his hair, "Failure." he mumbled under his breath, though he didn't show it at the time, what the voice in the cave had said to him resonated entirely inside of his mind. He failed. He failed himself, he failed the trial, and more importantly, he failed his team... He should have listened to Sasha, He should have taken a Pokemon that could swim with him, but no, instead he made a fool of himself and failed.
He sat on the edge of the crisped town, a sort of peaceful spot for him as he cleared his mind. He only had one arm, he was useless on missions, and could barely cook for himself... At least now he knew being an anti-social butterfree would come back to bite him.
In the end, he was obsolete, he had no one, he was a shell of himself and he was now a failure. Hell, he could quit the rangers today and no one would notice or even care. He was a nobody, and with his newest loss, he became a useless nobody.
Being part of Team Galactic Athena felt the need to scour down the organization's history if they were to become a stepping stone for her in the near future. Recent Galactic operations had left the town a shell of it’s past. There hadn’t been many records she could access that included Floaroma intel.
So she decided to pay a little visit.
Signs of fire were everywhere. The ground was a darker shade due to the ashes, but not lost. In fact, the soil was still workable if enough water could get rid of the soot gathered on top. Athena knelt down and grabbed a little bit of the soil, rubbing it between her fingers. Sadly, fixing things were not part of her resume. Unless it was for the profit of the Team, of course.
The scientist let the soil flutter through the air and continued with her investigations. They led her to a place at the edge of the town. Athena raised an eyebrow. The town was in ruins, so she was rather surprised someone wanted to stay and sit down. Was it for the view, or did they share the same intentions?
Perhaps a local, Athena thought, observing the sad figure from behind.
The scientist approached the red-haired man and saw he his arm had a cast. Judging from the way it hung, she could tell it was badly broken. But this needed further evaluation.
Everything needed evaluation when it came to Athena and damages. “Well, this looks bad.” She said approaching the man from behind. If there was no response, she’d try to lift his broken arm up to see how’d he react. “How’d you get such an injury? Are you part of this town?”
He sighed, hands cupped in his lap, this was really it . Alone in a broken village, at this point, he was better off dead than anything. He had few regrets, never finding "the one", never training his Pokemon to the best of their abilities, and never seeing the Sinnoh regon. He could release his Pokemon and dissapear into the wilderness to eventually lose his will to live and rot away... Perhaps that was his best option.
Footsteps approached, a woman's voice following. He was too far gone to listen entirely, but he did offer a response, "I failed a task and it was nearly crushed entirely..." he didn't look back, instead he kept his head down, careful not to rile up the stranger.
He shook his head, he wasn't from the town, but he enjoyed the peace ithat swept over it, "No, I just come here sometimes to sit and ponder..." he mumbled still not looking to the woman.
Athena frowned. The man's lacklustre response somewhat irritated her, but what could she expect? There were many people who had felt worse with less injury than this plebeian had gone through. He hadn't even looked at her. She sighed, with her arms still crossed. If he was to become her test subject, she needed to inject some vigor into his bloodstream, among other things. Him not being part of the town added more frustration, but she had to separate her emotions.
Athena would never forgive herself if she failed her research just because she couldn't control herself.
She circled and sat beside him.
"So you failed?" Athena raised an eyebrow with this.
"And what task would be so arduous to warrant a broken arm?" She poked at the broken arm with a finger, testing the man's pain reaction.
If he flinched, she would be able to tell how recent the injury was. "Well, it's not too bad you aren't from around here. It's not too strange either, considering how badly Team Galactic messed this place up."
Then she paused as the scientist sized him up. He had some built up physique, so Athena knew that he was at least physically active. She couldn't say the same about his mental activity.
The woman was extremely inquisitive, probably a researcher or something studying the area. It would be rude of him to leave, and more rude to tell her to buzz off, so he played into her questions.
He kept his eyes on the ground, not looking at her not even when she sat placed herself beside him. He didn't give her much of an answer only, "Yeah I failed."
She tapped his arm, he didn't wince, he didn't react much at all, "I went to the lake, took a trial, got my arm broken." his voice was almost robotic as he droned on.
There was a brief silence before she spoke about the town, he shrugged his shoulders, "If you say so."
The specimen was unresponsive to any type of stimulus. How was she going to work with something that couldn't even feel properly? As far as she could tell, this person who identified himself as Matt had damage only on one appendage. The scientist could not account for any damages psychologically, but blamed it on the man's very weak constitution. The scientist had seen species of the lower quartile resist defeat under extreme conditions. Perhaps, humans were far too complicated to understand simple reasoning?
For a moment, Athena entertained the thought of getting rid of 'emotions' in general, should Galactic’s endeavor succeed. But shelved the idea.
Maybe… she could use this depression to her advantage?
If he was unresponsive to pain, or anything she did, it was possible she could get away with anything the scientist wanted to do with this man.
The possibilities were endless.
After listening to his story, Athena smiled. It might’ve looked bright on the inside, but on the inside, Athena was brimming with murderous excitement.
It had been such a long time since the drowning Mudkip incident that she’d be able to experiment. “I see. Well, that’s too bad. But you really shouldn’t cry over spilled milk. It’s quite gross.” With that, the scientist would grab Matt’s cast and attempt to undo the wrapping around it, if Matt remained un-moving. She wanted to know what she’d be working with. “But I think I know what will make you feel better. Limb enhancement surgery.” Her eyes lit at the very mention of the procedure. “ Your arm might heal in what- two, three month?, maybe even a year. But… if we replace your arm with a mechanical arm, you wouldn’t have to worry about being weak and such...”
Things were beginning to turn strange, the doctor, or researcher or whatever she was began to get more hands on with him, which he would welcome if he wasn't a defeated milksop. He thought about what had happened, he thought about why he was moping around in the first place. The lake, he had let North down, gotten everyone hurt, and was the weak link of the mission and that was why they failed...
No one was hurt, Sasha sustained a similar injury to him but was no doubt as active if not just as active as she was before. Why was he so down if his teammates were fine? Maybe he felt guilty for the wall collapsing and everyone's time being wasted.
He couldn't be down now, he was right to feel bad, but here he was about to have his arm poked at. The cast was being spun off before he would pull it back.
"Now hold on a second." he said holding his arm, "Before I let you fool around with my arm, how about I get to know you better? You could at least buy a guy dinner before surgery."
His fit of depression had partially lifted, his crimson eyes filled with new life, "How about you give me your name?"
His arm was a little sore, it was more of a hairline fracture than a complete snap, Matt would unwrap his arm entirely. It still pained him, in fact, there was still a bit of bruising but it had healed well.
A fist was in an attempt to liven up the appendage, it was a sharp pain, but it was far more dull than what he had felt in the cave.
This little interaction certainly helped him wake up even if it was in a stint of bipolar awareness. He had a new friend to make after all!
"If you want to study my arm you can, but be gentle."
He was rather quick to get over his depression, wasn't he?
And since when did test subjects ever gained the right to make demands?
The scientist never understood the principle of equivalent exchange. Here she was, offering a man less than what he was, offering the chance to become more than the pathetic past that had set him into such a depression. It was apparent that a slimmer of hope was just the right cure for pride. Her attempts at uncoiling his bandages were soon foiled by Matt, who decided he was better suited for the task, much to Athena’s surprise.
His demands for dinner and personal interaction were less than surprising, however. How would she let this man know their terms of compliance were on completely different planes of existence? She was a scientist, a pioneer of the future. Athena was giving this man a chance to be a part of that. It was unthinkable of anyone to decline such opportunity.
Did they not want progress?
She reconstituted her thoughts, but still found the idea of getting to know her subjects on a personal, equal footing less and less appalling… but was curious how it’d affect the results. Athena never got to be the chance to become a test subject to her own experiments so maybe now was the chance.
“I will accept your proposition for dinner, I suppose. Even farmers feed their pigs quite plenty before harvesting them.” She carefully examined his arm … and frowned. The scientist was, by no means, a doctor but even she knew that the arm wasn’t that injured to warrant such an awful state of mind. Perhaps this man was dumber than he thought he was? Thankfully, Athena saw that he recovered.
She stood up and coughed, extending a hand to Matt. “I apologise for my lack of manners. My name is Athena Elder. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” There was no hint of warmth of welcoming in her voice. It was all very business like. If he decided to shake her hand, they’d shake. If he refused, it was of no consequence. “ As for your proposition to get to know better… I don’t really find it beneficial on my end, though you could stand to learn a few things with my company...”
She paused and started poking at his wound again. “Hmm…. you seem to have some built up physique, though your extremely simple minded. What kind of profession would accept someone like you? ”
The situation was certainly intriguing when he arrived on scene he didn't expect to be poked and prodded like a piece of meat, though considering the butcher, he didn't mind much. Her approach could be a little softer, but none the less he had gotten something out of his depressed state.
He didn't quite understand her fascination with his arm; it was just a little injury, an injury that only lasted a few months at the most, yet here she was ready to play with it. Was she maybe a doctor? Perhaps a crazed Pokemon researcher? He couldn't quite pin anything down on the woman before him but crazy. If she wanted a plaything, she could have just asked in the beginning.
The figure of dinner was accepted, though he didn't really ask her out, there was no point in complaining. He wore a smile on his face, despite the feeling in the back of his mind telling him to run, and run far from this touchy guest.
What was her problem? He couldn't tell.
Wait did she just compare him to a pig being lead to slaughter? Okay, perhaps she was a cannibal, a pretty cannibal, but still a CANNIBAL, it was obvious that he needed to get out of this conversation quickly.
"Oh, ow, my arm..." he held his formerly injured arm and held it against his chest, "Ouch, yeah I don't think I can stick around too much longer, ooooouch, you poked the most injured spot thing..." he faked his injury terribly, but backed away from the woman.
"Hey, we should def do dinner though, but not nooooow. Oh the pain! What a shame too, I really wanted to let you test on me! Who knows what sort of attainments you could obtain with me as your test subject."
He paused for a moment, was she trying to offend him? He had something that wasn't so simple that would fix her attitude... Oh yeah.
"I'm a field scientist, I came out here to test the fertility of soil." he lied, he was a ranger, buuut he didn't need his new 'buddy' to snoop around the HQ whenever they wanted to rip his arm off.
Athena had her arms crossed with an unamused, yet blank face. What she hated more than repeating herself, was being taken around for a fool. Besides the moment he started feigning weakness over his injury, the man had lost all hope in convincing her of anything else. Matt took back his arm and cradled it against his chest. It was amusing to see him back away though.
She tilted her head in question. He could just decline her offer and leave… so why did he have to go through all this pretense? Did he want something from her, without compromising his well-being? While the scientist did find it offensive how everyone thought she was too incompetent to do her job properly, Athena did know how to put back the things she pulled apart.
On the other hand, this fool couldn’t even make one coherent lie. But she indulged Matt nonetheless. It was too obvious this illiterate, single celled organism was not a scientist.
“I’m sorry…” though her apology lacked any and all sincerity whatsoever. “ I didn’t think it hurt that badly. You were so unresponsive before, that I thought it was a flesh wound.” At the end of this sentence, she smiled, though it wasn’t an amicable one, and switched straight to surprise.
“Oh really?!” Athena approached closer, even if he backed away. “ Field scientist… researching the fertility of the soil? That’s quite task.” She grabbed a handful of the ground beneath them and rubbed it between her fingers. “ So field scientist, have you tested the acidity of the soil yet? Do you think the effects of Team Galactic’s wrong doings can be reversed? Is it restorable?”
Matt sighed, questions, questions.. She had sooo many questions.
Matt avoided her blank gaze, the woman before him sure was stiff, he didn't ask her to stick around, nor did he ask her to screw with him, yet here she was. A woman with some sort of issue he couldn't tell what she was thinking and all he wanted to do was to do was get out of there. He stopped in his tracks.
He didn't doubt that she was an excellent whatever she was, but he didn't want any part of her... As far as studies were concerned.
“Yeah it's alright," she was a battle axe, he'd give her that, though she was insincere and venomous, just Matt's type, "Mhmm"
“Yeah sure,” he stayed in place and met her gaze, “ I would say the soil is salvageable, the ash from the wooden homes has given the top soil more than enough nutrition for plant growth. Alkalinity levels are decent as the result." he wasn't entirely lying, part of his being out here was ranger work.
He rubbed his chin, "Tell me about what you'd like to do with my arm, maybe we can perform a more or less adequate procedure. And what are the odds of us going to more than dinner? An intellectual like you probably has a well of knowledge I can learn from."
It wasn’t the first time Athena was surprised by someone who had somewhat surpassed her expectations. Incredible still, he actually used Alkalinity in a sentence. But her expression was blank, if not thoughtful. Athena back off a few steps, her hands still crossed underneath her chest.
What he said was mostly true.
It had been amusing for a while, but first, Athena did not like being taken around for a fool, and second, no secret was safe from her once bitten by curiosity.
“Hmph.” She smiled, the same way a fox would grin once it saw it’s pray cornered. “The ph levels of the soil actually don’t really affect the reconstruction of this town’s previous floral nature. Not until you can get rid of…” Pointed at the blackish-color of the soil. “ The thick layer of ash that’s gathered around this area. The composition of the soil’s minerals, and microbial population may have changed due to the amount of heat applied to the ground caused by the fire but acidity levels may still vary depending on the chemical compounds of the ash that has seeped deep into the ground.” She paused her smiled growing larger by the minute.
“Unfortunately for you, this area right here used to be industrial, so the chemicals that have seeped into the ground will have poisoned it to some extent.” Athena loved telling these sort of lectures, and showing off what a brilliant scientist she was. Specially when it came to discerning lies from factual truth.
And with that she went back to poking his arm, exposed. She wanted to tell him if he didn’t bandage it, he risked dislocation or infection, but Athena wasn't that kind of person. All she did was for the benefit of science. “So let’s stop with all the charades and tell me what exactly it is you do for a living?”
She paused and considered his proposition. Were they dancing? That’s how it felt like. If one of them would take a step forward, and then two steps back, Athena pondered if maybe, just maybe, she could become less aggressive and … ugh, a little nicer?
Then maybe she could what she wanted with this man.
There was also the option of drugging him. For her own safety, and purposes of examination, Athena always carried a lab kit with all sorts of chemicals. One which included a powerful tranquilizer, and while it might be difficult to administer on Pokemon, it wasn’t that hard to use it on humans.
“I suppose we can forget about your limb enhancements for now...” She smiled, a little gentler now and went to embrace Matt’s one good arm. “But dinner would be quite lovely. I really want to know what kind of job would give you all these useless muscles, and maybe share an intimate evening?”
She added a giggle at the end. Athena had seen lots of women act this way with the opposite sex when they wanted something.
Matt chuckled, "Hm, looks like you caught me." he dusted his hands, "Clever girl."
Hm, well he couldn't lie as a researcher, and he couldn't tell her it was any of her business, that'd just be rude, and he didn't want that. Still, he wasn't going to tell her the truth either. "I'm unemployed... Never had a job in my life." he shrugged, "Well that's not entirely true, I used to be in a gang, robbed some people, stole some Pokemon, nothing special."
She was cunning, intelligent, and aggressive, like a milotic, and it was only a matter of time before she tightened around him and suffocated him to death, "Well, why don't you tell me what you do? Modeling perhaps? Maybe you're a scientist who likes to pick up idiots and break them before throwing them out."
As much as he wanted to take her out, it was evident that she just wanted to fool around with his arm, Though if she wanted to get more touchy with him...
Matt slid his arm out of her grasp and wrapped it around her waist, "Oh yeah, I know a nice restaurant, though by intimate I feel as tough you mean experimenting on me. madam if you want a test subject you can just say so. I've got nothing to live for, and my life is already bleak."
His words of praise meant nothing to her. They were neither satisfactory nor legitimate. Nonetheless, Athena had successfully broken this man’s facade, though they were fruitless efforts since it was replaced with a new one. Athena reevaluated her game plan. If he didn’t want to tell him what his work was, Athena would have to try and find out later.
The thought of testing out her truth serum theory was compelling, but the success of every experiment highly depended on timing. And right now was definitely the time for that. She’d have to rely on more… humane things.
“Oh? What do you mean by ‘used to be’? Not that I doubt any of what you said of course.” She moved back a little bit, feigning a pensive look on her face. “ You really do look like a fool who’d get roped in that kind of scenario. Tsk, you poor thing…” She rarely made any empathy with any kind of organic being, so even though she did try, it came out as sarcasm more or less.
Athena was slightly taken aback by his inquiry about her work. Was it not clear what she did for a living? For the entire time they had spent together, the scientist had displayed remarkable intelligence for someone her age! Perhaps intelligence did not translate well into idiocy? Even for a jest or sarcastic comment, Athena hated it when she had to state the obvious, cause it also meant repeating herself.
“What I do is hardly important.” She said passively, while looking to the side and dismissing his question outside the atmosphere. “ The heart of the matter right now is your unemployment.” She went back and came up to him somewhat closer this time, and attempted to place both hands on Matt's face, making him look at her. “ I may have a job for you, which goes in line with your offer. If you really want to, I ask you to formerly be one my test subjects for a rather special project I have in mind.”
And there she goes again with the insulting. Apparently, when you go to Snob U, they don't teach you manners... He could bare this debacle a little longer, or he cold just arrest her on the spot and charge her with assault.
She was a bad actor, just as bad as he was. Her 'sincerity' came with sweet little twist fo sarcasm, and her looking down upon didn't go unnoticed. Did she think he was stupid? Of course, she did, why? Because he was minding his own business trying to sulk in peace. He could drop the facade for her, but he wasn't going to tell her anything any time soon.
Matt rolled his eyes, "You are just a ray of sunshine aren't you?" he placed his hands on hers and gingerly pulled them away from his face."You clearly think I'm some a moron, and don't tell me otherwise, you've been condescending the entire time we've spoken."
As she did to him he placed his hands on her cheeks and beamed to her a confident smirk, "You're perfect, " he had to give it to her she was soft despite her hard interior, "You're so cold it's almost refreshing, so please, call me an idiot and keep treating me like dirt but tell me, as my possible surgeon you need to at least give me some deatils about yourself." he pulled her a little closer, "Starting with why did you pick me and what makes you so self-righteous that you feel you can just walk up to someone and treat them like a piece of meat."
He stroked her cheek, "Other than those two things, you really are pretty cute for a mad scientist."
