major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
Athena blinked and laughed as the man brought her hands out of his facial area.
It wasn’t an outburst of laughter, but subtle, disciplined. Her smiled was enough to convey how easily Matt had realised his calling. Not that she expected that, of course. Most people needed help with that, and Athena was more than happy to lend a hand. If truth be told, Athena was simply curious, but what was happening right now, was much more interesting than researching this dilapidated town. Sure both subjects seemed broken, but at least one was fighting back to keep his integrity. Or what little he had.
“Condescending, huh?” She walked around him at a slow pace, arms crossed with a hand on her chin. “I’m sorry if I came on too ‘strong’ for you. But I really dislike people not knowing their disposition in life-”
The scientist was stopped in her tracks as Matt gave her a taste of her own medicine. Athena always approached everyone by taking a good look at them. This way she could tell quite a lot of things about them. Matt had no idea about this, and was probably just doing it to get back at her.
“I have no idea if you’re praising me or insulting me, but it doesn’t matter.” She clasped his hands and placed them on her shoulders, and leaned forward to whisper on his ear. “ I’ll answer your questions, but then you’re going to have to answer some of mine …”
When she leaned back, her smile was genuine, though she never really learned to smile properly so to some people, it came off as dubious quite often.
Then, she gasped and pointed at his arm. “You better wrap that back or you risk bone dislocation, and/or infection should any foreign object land on that wound…”
There was a ginger laugh, not a rumbling howl, not a thunderous roar, but a gentle chuckle if anything. She truly believed he was a joke, just like the rangers did. He didn't mind being the butt of the joke, but so her he was probably little more than a subject in some sort of test.
As his hands held her face in place he got a good look at her, of course, he had complimented her physical appearance, but there was something more to him. Her eyes, they were cold but gleamed with life almost desensitized of real emotion however and not those that she faked so well.
She placed his hands on her shoulders and whispered in his ear. He nodded in agreement, it was fair, but he wasn't sure if he should be cautious or not. She seemed genuine in her answer, and even told him to rewrap his arm.
"I suppose you're right," he reeled back, and slowly re-wrapped his arm. She was confusing, one moment she's a battle axe, next she's cold as ice, and then she's sweet as she can be he would certainly need to keep contact with her, this was the most interesting conversation he had had in Sinnoh as of late.
He finished wrapping his injury and rubbed his chin, "I'm actually a ranger. I was into blue collar crime for a while, stealing from Pokemarts, shipping Pokemon across regions, simple things." the truth flowed forth, "I later signed up for Galactic because I needed somewhere to go, I was on my own for so long that I signed up immediately after reading through the contract."
He sighed, "I quit Galactic on the request of a new friend, and become a ranger. I became a cadet fist day on the job and I managed to keep my galactic past away from the others."
"As for my arm, It was broken during the trial of lake verity, I tested my courage, but sadly my other squad mates but one were too afraid to perform the trial but one and my arm was crushed as the result." he took a breath, "The trial was to stick my arm in a hole to test my courage, oddly enough my arm was flash frozen in the hole and when things got bad 'the wall imploded and my arm was broken."
By the end of the story, Athena’s expectant expression turned into a glare and had dislodged herself from Matt completely. It wasn’t just some points in her story that had irritated her. The entire damned scenario felt like she was being told a fantasy novel! Except magic and sword were completely replaced by idiocy and more idiocy. Their stories were completely similar… except for the fact that Athena had never struggled the way Matt did.
It irritated her how pitiful his story was, but more than that, how they had extremely close backgrounds.
“Ugh…” She couldn’t help but let out in disgust. “ So basically, you were some mindless criminal and got roped into servitude by Team Galactic, without reaping the benefits, and then you quit that lifestyle because a friend asked you to become a ranger?” Her arms were crossed just below her cleavage, her glare worsening by the minute. “ And you’re telling me you got that injury because no one else was brave enough to do some stupid challenge of stupidity…?!”
She paused, placing a few fingers on her temple, massaging them from bursting forth another headache. “And here I thought heroes only existed in to teach children what not to do...” Athena sighed, and shook her head. She was letting emotions take over again. “Alright. A deal’s a deal.” She stomped her feet in frustration. “ Most experiments I tend to recruit run away, god knows for what reason. I can only assumed they value too much what worthless lives they have. On the other hand, you could’ve been the perfect experiment if only you’d stay depressed long enough for me to do a couple of tests." The she paused once more, and turned around to start walking out, but not before glancing at Matt from the back. “ As it turns out, I do have the right to act all self-righteous considering you’re a bigger idiot than I expected…”
If he wanted to, Matt could run up to stop her, or let things just end here.
Her expression sharpened a look of anger and disgust in her eyes. What had he done? Was his story too petty? He couldn't blame her, but hopefully, she could sympathize with him at least this once, yes it was a pathetic tale, but it was his.
Each word dug into his softened ego like a hot blade driving through butter, each little dagger worst than the last. "It-" he held his tongue and continued to take the scolding. He was terrible with words, a trait that had followed him long past childhood and evidently it had followed him into adulthood. "I know It's a pathetic tale, I do sound like a complete idiot."heShe turned to leave after finishing her rant, He would follow her, placing a hand on her shoulder, "I trust you, but I want you to trust me, and forgo my story of idiocy." he cleared his throat and withdrew his hand. If she accepted, he'd be mighty glad, if she declined, he'd understand.
Athena felt Matt’s hand rest on her shoulder. It made her stop, but she instantly glared at him by glancing to the side. What else could he say? It was idiots like him that made society move backwards. It did surprise her that he could still stay calm and even ask her to tell him her own life’s story. She raised an eyebrow to this, meeting his apologetic yet pleading eyes.
“So apart from asking me to tell you my own story…” She turned around, flinging his hand to the side, and crossed her arms underneath her bosom. Her glare was colder than ice. “... you want me trust you and forget you’re an idiot?” Athena massaged her temple with two fingers, the other arm still crossed. Was she this desperate to get new material? If only good test subjects were in season….
“Then, tell me how and why should I trust someone enough to hurt himself and regret it afterwards?” She began circling around him, like a predator waiting to pounce. It was slow, paced and quite menacing. If he didn’t answer correctly, Athena would have no qualms devouring him. “ If you’re an idiot… forgetting you are one won’t make you smarter. Just don’t be stupid. If you can’t do that, again me trusting you… is out of the question. ”
She paused behind him and thought for a bit. Athena promised to answer his questions, but considering he was a ranger, she wouldn’t walk into the lion’s dead, if she wasn’t prepared to kill the lion. Athena decided to keep her word… or at least part of it. “Again, only part of the deal. My father was a scientist, and my mother a ranger. They both died doing what they loved, and some of their relatives adopted me. I ended up running away because of some… psychological differences. I was smart and they… were not. So I left them. ”
Athena paused and shook her head. Those memories would stay buried off memory lane, so there was no need to resurrect them by talking about her past.
“And now that I think about it, you’re probably even less to be qualified as an experiment.”
He had gotten her to stop, but the battle to prove his worth was far from over. Her ice cold glare fell on him again. Honestly, he liked it, she was fierce almost like a lioness ready to tear him to shreds and he loved every minute. Matt's eyes closed, a quick short breath escaping through his nose. "I am not an idiot." the sound of her shoes stepping around him made his heart skip with every beat.
She had told him to explain himself, why he was worthy of her company. The very thought was jumbling his mind, the words were ready but he couldn't choke them out. He licked his lips, "You can trust me because if I wasn't sincere about helping you, I wouldn't have stopped you." it was yet another idiotic response, but it was all he could get out for now.
"If I could further prove to you that I'm worth your time I would do it. "he glanced at her, "I'll turn in my badge right now if I have to." For some reason, he felt desperate almost like he had to be her experiment. He wanted to, but she seemed to drift further.
"Hey your story sounds sort of like mine. My dad was a ranger and he died in the line of duty, but my mom disappeared. I got adopted by some relatives but I left because of... Differences."
Matt beamed a light smile to the girl stepping forward, "Hey we're not too different after all, except well you're way smarter than me... And you've got those gorgeous eyes." A little flattery went a long way, though at this point he seemed like he was trying too hard.
This was probably the first time that someone had wanted to be her new plaything. It was very, very interesting and disappointing at the same time. Primarily, because the test subject was full of flaws and more importantly, broken. If he had stayed the way he was before, and had she not known the cause of his grief, she could’ve had fun in many ways with his body.
Athena did realise the hypocrisy in her anger.
After all, she was the one who approached him and shot question after question after question. But she wouldn’t be Athena Elder if she wasn’t thorough with everything. The only problem was she didn’t do trust, sympathy or anything remotely close to that. The scientist did admit she did let get her anger, and playfulness get in the way sometimes, but once she achieved her goals, there’d be none of that getting in the way.
“That’s what most idiots say to themselves…” She muttered to herself, though loud enough for Matt to hear. “ Hmm. You’re prone to the idiom “wearing your heart on your sleeve”... aren’t you?”
His proof of loyalty and worth was completely useless to her. She actually did not want anything at all from him, and simply wanted to drive him away. Athena raised an eyebrow, while rubbing her chin. What made him so sure that he wanted to do anything with her?
“Keep your badges. They are worthless to me.” She shook her head, and then sighed as Matt, once again, attempted to place them on equal grounds. His words of praise fell on deaf hears. If he had been that depressed about acting like a hero, they were definitely a bad match. But if he was that committed to contributing, Athena would gladly indulge that… with a few exceptions.
“Let’s make some thing’s very clear.” She grabbed his collar, or t-shirt, and if successful, she would look into his eyes with a cold glare. “ You and I will never be alike. Flattery will get you as far as your grave.” Athena let go of him, pushing him back a little.
“Now, tell me..” Athena crossed her arms under her chest, a dubious smile on her face. “ If I do work on your body, apart from your stupidity, what do you think should I improve?”
Righht back to square on it was, just like every other statement he got from her, she found a new and exciting way to call him an idiot. At this point there was no point in trying to pal up to her, she just wasn't interested, as a battle axe shouldn't. She was ice cold, a high-browed, self-centered,vernomous woman and here was no way to her.
Of course, she was the type though, she was like every other woman rather she admitted or not. There was always something she wanted and if she didn't get it, or if she was offered something else, her entire mood changed. Well, there was no point in crying over spilled milk.
"Well okay, I guess compliments don't get too far with women anymore. As far as being your experiment, I'm not too depressed anymore, so no thanks."
She took a hold of his collar, so he in turn gripped her wrist and yanked her forward, his crimson eyes staring into hers, "You aren't any better than me, and you know it. Now go on your way girl before I turn you into one of my experiments." he released her wrist but didn't break his gaze.
She was the typical battle axe, he probably wouldn't see her again, but for good reason. She would probably go have a change of heart or something and end up 'not that bad'.
Now to await her witty come back that may or may not result in him showing her just how dumb he is.
Athena staggered backwards, her wrist sore from Matt’s unbridled anger. Thankfully, she didn’t fell. That would’ve been ultimately quite embarrassing. Had she gone too far with her words? Perhaps she did, but the scientists felt it useless to mince her words just to make people happier. She’d feel a little guilty… if Athena cared one bit. There’d be no point to her dream of getting rid of emotions if Athena always wore her heart on her sleeve.
Emotions almost always led to errors in judgement, and sometimes cause irrevocable mistakes.
The scientist always forgot she bruised quite easily, since she hardly did any manual labor for her organization. Nothing was broken, just seriously red, maybe a little purple from Matt’s grip. Athena was right to deduce him as a muscle brain. It wasn’t an insult, though, since the brain was a muscle too.
One that Matt probably ignored quite often.
“Oof! That’s gonna leave a mark…” she said rubbing her wrist, her facial expression however, still as icy as before. Pain was a chemical reaction to warn the consciousness of the body’s limits. It was annoying, but Athena was proud of her tolerance to pain, as it was common for most women. “But this you is much better than the sappy red-head a few minutes ago… it’s such a pity, though I can’t lower my standards any more than I have.”
She shook her head, still with a smile on her face. “How am I gonna explain this to the public? I have a meeting with Professor Rowan today… an injury like this will be hard to explain. But do not fret…”
As she turned around to leave, Athena gave Matt one last playful glare. “Science has ways to find the truth.”
How easy it would be to wipe that smile off of her face, he could decimate her entirely and no one could stop him. It'd be easy, she was red after one little grab? Hm, he may have been mentally weak, but she was frail. No, it doesn't matter, he made his point and she can say whatever she wanted. It didn't matter.
She babbled on about something as she did over the last conversation, "Save your ramblings for the professor." he went back to his seat, he didn't watch her leave, he didn't care anymore. He had shown weakness and let his thirst get in his way one too many times already. Whoever they were was irrelevant, they were a cold hearted egomaniac, just as he was, except of course for the obvious difference in intelligence.
He went back to pondering his thoughts, that horrific debacle ended as it should, and he should have sent her on her way far sooner.
