major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
a lot of things had happened at the lunar ball, from the storeroom fiasco to ana meeting a lot of different people, to the food spilling over the guests. but in all the glorious event and its aftermath, this had to be the most absurdly out of place.
nevertheless ana remained hyper alert as they put the dark blue dress through the fingerprint screening, had it looked over for hair and traces of fabric, ran them through a machine. she had already looked over the results while the boss wasn't looking and wasn't about to take the whole the commissioner wants this on the down-low thing to mean something personal. after all, satisfying her curiosity would always come first.
there were finger prints everywhere-- miss mastry was popular. the most fascinating of course being those of sabrina townsend and LIAM SUMMERS . one had attempted to recruit ana into galactic (and almost almost succeeded) and the other had been on the wanted criminal list for ages. the rest of the dress was completely normal, and they had it washed and sterilized before put in an air tight plastic bag along with the other reports and then filed in a wax-enclosed folder with the official seal of the rangers. because apparently the rangers were into this now.
"uhm, ma'am?" ana asked, wanting to roll her eyes as the old woman ignored her. "don't you find this suspicious?" she asked, tone almost hopeful.
"it isn't our business, clarke."
of course not. because everyone in the whole HQ could hate their new standoffish commissioner but you could put them all in a hyperfusion chamber and no result would actually dare to go against the ginger. ana could imagine her brother wanting to strangle this woman. after all, according to him the two fundamental essentials to being a detective of any sort were a sense of justice and a thirst for knowledge. ana wasn't sure about the former but she most certainly possessed the later, in quantities her supervisor would likely be unable to comprehend.
"i'll give it to her then," ana said, cheerily, with no ulterior motive whatsoever. hah.
"when you come back, get me some coffee."
"extra dark? like the rest of your boring life?" ana asked, probably pushing it. thankfully, the woman was distracted enough to just nod. ana smirked ferally and walked out. ah, the little things. exiting from the forensics lab and into the rest of the ranger base often felt like returning to the surface after a voyage under water. everyone moved about their normal lives, the rangers often so filled with a sense of their own importance that they didn't even see ana. of course not. she was just an intern.
sighing, she began making her way to the commissioner's office. before getting lost. twice. and then finally finding the door she was looking for. commissioner in chief adrian mastry, sinnoh div. hello, miss paranoid. or maybe, like her, it was curiosity? ana wondered briefly what sort of woman the commissioner was, what her office would look like on the inside, what she did outside the ranger base. all sorts of ideas and random tangents came to her mind, before she opened Schrodinger's door (as long as it remained unopen, the possibilities remained infinite) and found herself...thoroughly disappointed.
there was some special kind of sadness when a person lived up to the rumors about them without exceeding a single one.
a desk. the room gave the impression like it would have contained even less if it were possible. nothing weird, nothing strange. not a speck of dust out of place. but more importantly, the woman wasn't here. "miss mastry?" she asked, just to be sure. no response. her grin returned as she closed the door behind her, slipping into the room like she was a cat burglar in the middle of the world's greatest treasury.
she skipped over to the desk, where the forensics report slipped slowly from her grasp as her eyes wandered over all the papers just laying there. first she noticed the lack of personalization, but she wasn't surprised. second she noticed the maps. maps everywhere. with red dots and crosses and questions marks an dashes of small, hurried handwriting. without thinking, she pulled out her phone and began taking pictures. of anything at all that she could find. she tried the drawers next, found one of them unlocked and began rummaging. she began taking picture of things she found interesting, and then went back to the top of the desk.
it wasn't organized, thief-like rummaging. it was the excited rummaging of a curious cat that had found too may balls of yarn.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
There was never a single day where the commissioner could ever get any rest while within the confines of the Ranger Headquarters. Adrian had sighed upon that revelation as she trekked through the halls carrying stacks of manila folders in arm and holding her cell phone in the opposite hand. Having left an impromptu meeting moments ago, the ginger was frantically skimming the schedule displaying on her phone to make sure it had not thrown it off kilter. Being the type of person that she was the ginger made it an effort to not be late to any of her endeavors nor fall behind in any of her scheduled work, and thus began the chain which lead the woman back towards her office. There were still reports to read and missions to assign sitting on her desk, not to mention she was expecting a delivery to be made from the forensics lab within the next few hours.
That said she didn't anticipate the anyone coming to physically visit her within the next hour; which is why when the woman unceremoniously swung open the door to her office to see the strange brunette standing behind her desk, the ginger could was unable to muster anything but a bemused expression. "..." she'd stand there in silence for a moment, glancing around trying to figure out the girl's purpose here. As if perhaps this wasn't actually her office or her secretary was trying to pull a prank on her. But whether the girl would turn to her or Adrian would snap out of it first, it wouldn't take long for her to break the silence with in a moderately miffed tone. "Can I help you with something?"
Taking a few steps forward into the room, she'd walked over to the desk and drop the file stacks first over the papers that were clearly being ransacked before shifting her undivided attention to the culprit of the victimless crime. Placing her hand into her hip after sliding her phone conveniently into the pockets of her pants, she continued. "And by that I mean, what the hell are you doing?"
and then the door swung open and ana felt her heart skip so many beats she was certain she was already dead by the time she saw the redhaired adrian mastry enter the room. or at least she assumed it was mastry considering the thick ginger locks at the way she swung the door open like she owned the place. which was alright because she technically did. ah shit, she was losing control of he thoughts.
adrian walked forward and while anastasia was mostly entirely undaunted by simple things like steps, as those steps resounded she could feel them spelling out the end of her career. well, it wasn't like much would be missed of the crazy days at ranger base and waking up at five am to find someone dead. but still, she was going to get fried if she went home and told them she had been sacked.
as she got closer ana became increasingly aware of the incriminating evidence all around her- the disordered stacks of paper, her phone in her hands that was still in the camera function, and of course the terribly guilty look on her face that she tried to shove away.
"oh, no, not really miss commissioner--" was that even how you addressed her? ana wished she payed more attention to ranger ranks, sometimes--- "i just came in to drop off the forensics report you ordered."of your dress. seriously?
but alas it would not be that easy. ana frowned, and as usual she was doomed by her cursed tongue to speak boldly. "nothing at all. you have a lovely office," she commented, her tone regaining its composure quickly. either she was insane or far too used to lying like this. maybe a mix of both. she quickly took two steps back, gaining as much distance as possible from the woman. which didn't help, because the way things were now she'd have to walk not away from but past mastry in order to reach the exit.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Judging by the way that the brunette was reacting, with the startled expression and the guilt written all over, she did not anticipate the ginger coming here - which was strange considering this was her office and all. Raising a brow at the scrambling reaction, Adrian had since stood up straight and crossed her arms over her chest as she waited for some sort of reasonable explanation for what seemed to be obvious signs of delinquency. Of course much was discovered by the way that her demands were answered and the first such thing was the statement of her rank.
Merely hearing the term 'miss commissioner' had caused some annoyance in the ginger who had roll her eyes at the label. No one around the headquarters nor any of the longstanding rangers, despite her lack of association or popularity with anyone, had gone as far as to call her Miss anymore. The commissioner part was met with a sighed, "You must be one of the new cadets." One working with the forensics team apparently from what she had gotten from the conversation.
Regardless it was no excuse for whatever this person was doing and Adrian was not receiving any explanation to make her think otherwise. Instead she was met with the dismissal of doing anything questionable despite the fact that her emerald eyes were flickering towards the phone in hand and all the paperwork that had since been unorganized over her desk. "Why does everyone take me for an idiot?" she mumbled under her breath, taking the sight into consideration as she shook her head in disappointment. With that in mind, the information regarding the completed forensics report was placed to the back of her mind; dealing with this situation taking a higher priority.
Taking a hand to extend outwards with palm opened, she would fixate a foreboding gaze onto the unknown brunette. "Hand over your phone cadet." She was going to get to the root of this, and the first steps were obviously confiscating the evidence. "What's your name?"
anastasia wanted to roll her eyes. even the commissioner it seemed was not exempt from the rule of everyone having to state the obvious. granted it could have been her chance to admit she was new and was admiring the office but her skewed sense of pride would not allow for that. instead she had to refrain from outright saying something sarcastic by biting the inside of her lip. she hoped it looked like a cute, ashamed gesture.
probably not.
"occupational hazard," she said mindlessly, and then immediately wanted to kill herself. that was not something you said to the ranger commissioner under any circumstances. she'd be lucky if she left the office alive. nevertheless she stood by her statement, but she was obviously trying to not look intimidated. the foreboding gaze the commissioner would toss her way wouldn't exactly help either.
ana considered the order, as she did all orders. she wasn't bred in the ranger academy and hadn't been taught to respond quickly, having been a regular old student before applying for the force. so she considered: she could either refuse and get fired on account of insubordination, or accept and attempt to bullshit her way out of it. the only reason she didn't throw her hat in with the second option was because she'd lose her precious 'investigation.'
after a while she sighed and handed over the phone, screen still unlocked and on the camera function. "anastasia clarke," she said, because too much bullshit was never a good idea.
of course the idea of getting fired on account of espionage only occurred after she gave away the phone. siiigh.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
"Right..." the ginger would speak in a less than amused tone upon hearing the mindless comment from the brunette. While she did try to read the unusual expression on the cadets face it didn't do much in terms of improving the already poor impression left to her. Her brows slightly furrowed at the sight and the commissioner had to refrain from the impulse of hitting the other woman upside the head. This was further emphasized once her order wasn't immediately heeded. It was certainly audacious and perhaps even slightly impressive for a cadet to be saying and acting in such a way so readily if only it was not directed to Adrian herself.
Eventually amidst indications of disapproval and reluctance however, her instructions were heeded and the phone was placed into her open palm. On the other hand there was no word of gratitude as Adrian's gaze shifted from the brunette to the screen of the device. "Clarke, then." A nonchalant remark to affirm the name of the woman before accessing the camera roll. Her eyes would narrow upon recognizing the images that expanded onto the small screen, her finger swiping through each photo and taking note of the particular subjects being photographed.
A thought followed wondering if this was some work of either galactic or rocket, but she doubted that any spy would be this stupid to be caught so blatantly and then behave in such a way. It almost reeked of childish nonsense and the woman was tempted to delete everything right then and there if not for the fact it was evidence. Instead she'd release a sigh of annoyance before redirecting her glare to the cadet in question. "I suppose you have some explanation to why you were taking photos of things around my office?"
now she was nervous, but the commissioner seemed to be revealing nothing and instead looking at her phone with a mix of contempt and mild curiosity. she watched the girl slide her fingers across the screen, affronted by the breach of personal space that this meant. anastasia clearly did not like other people peering into her things. the photos section, however, was most empty with a little ridiculous selfies and lots of pictures of her brother and probably wasn't anything too embarrassing. but it was still an offense to have someone she disliked holding her phone. dislike...did she dislike he commissioner? yes. she decided it in a instant and figured she might as well go along with it. for now, anyway...there were secrets to uncover before she could decide for sure.
well. this girl really was putting her to the test, wasn't she? anastasia's look of discomfort and mild fear vanished into thin air, replaced quickly by a sleazy grin. her hands that had previously been crossed over her chest in defiance were now shoved into the pockets of her forensics lab coat as she stretched on her tiptoes for a bit. "well you do have a nice office." her smirk was probably a strain on the commissioner's patience at this point, but ana had already decided which hand she wanted to play.
"would you believe me if i said i was examining the decor?" she asked childishly, wondering what the commissioner would do. the ginger could likely just accuse her of spying and strip her of her license but the woman didn't that extreme. or maybe she just looked like she couldn't spare the effort to be that extreme. ana couldn't tell. only time could.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Ah, how ironic. Adrian also didn't like when other people peered into her things, yet this cadet of hers apparently had no issue with doing so without the permission or authority. Truthfully the ginger cared little for the personal photos from earlier in the camera roll, making a brief mental note of the contents from the small thumbnails displayed on screen as she went towards the photos taken of her office. Clearly it was her office because she had recognized the contents of everything displayed in each picture as something from within the room they stood in. While perhaps she could delete the images, there was no forcing someone to forget what they saw.
That said, once the estranged expression of the brunette evaporated, a brow rose once the grin spread across the opposing woman's lips. It reminded her of her boyfriend's grin when he was plotting something mischievous in an effort to rile her. As if to further enunciate that deduction of her's, the smart aleck commentary had the commissioner narrowing her eyes out of distinct displeasure.
Was she... testing her patience?
Either way, it felt apparent that the training personnel were slacking off on training the new recruits to becoming cadets and the brunette wasn't going to get a more lenient reaction out of the agitated ginger. "And how is the interior of my drawers and paperwork contribute to the nice decor?" she'd question halfheartedly, keeping that irked tone in her voice. She was not expecting an actual response considering the attitude the other woman was fronting. Again, childish nonsense, and that was all the commissioner was able to conclude from this interaction. Thus she'd roll her eyes regardless of whatever answer was provided to her - if any - before running her free hand through her vermilion locks. "Ugh, I don't have time to babysit you."
She'd mumble lowly in the same aggravated tenor. Shifting a glare towards the other, she'd keep the other's phone in her hand to continue swiping through the pictures from her peripheral vision. "Why did you become a ranger, Clarke?" Adrian would bring herself to ask, raising her voice as if demanding a clear cut answer and none of that nonsense she was trying to feed to her before. "What's stopping me from discharging you right now?"
oohh. ana had pissed this woman off. it was exciting and yet terrifying, but the perfect mix of both. after some time in high school the novelty of playing devil's advocate with teacher had worn off, but this was a new kind of rebellion she could launch into that posed a greater threat and offered greater reward. she didn't bother responding to the sarcasm-- her response had been initially sarcastic and responding wouldn't do either of them any good.
a flicker of anger crossed over her face at the ginger's next comment. ana could deal with a lot of things, but being treated like a child wasn't really the top of her list, and the dismissive, arrogant tone of voice didn't sit too well with her. then again, she was almost asking for that one. of course her could only put on the smirk a few moments after the initial wave of rage had disappeared and she could only hope the ranger didn't notice.
"because i like guys in uniform," she joked, but it wasn't said with mirth anymore, and even the goofy smile she put on could not hide that the mood had been spoiled. seriousness, now, it seemed. she scowled briefly before her face turned vacant, neutral. "since you don't have time to deal with me, i'll skip the pleasantries. for money." she wasn't going to make up a sob story. besides, she genuinely wanted to know what the woman would make of that.
"well, there are plenty," she said, her tone argumentative, easily coming to her own defense with less than a second of hesitance in her stance shift. "one, it would mean more paperwork." she gestured to the desk matter of factly-- it didn't take a snoop to know that those piles weren't going away any time soon. "two, it wouldn't exactly make the rangers love you much more, although i get the feeling you don't care what other people think."
"and finally, doing so would be utterly pointless because i'm obviously not a spy. and you could literally just delete all the photos right now and we could get back to not knowing each other."

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
And all she kept getting regardless was nonsense. A scoff of animosity was expired at the apparent answer being due to 'guys in uniform' to which the woman didn't care to comprehend. While it might have been a joke, the cadet was already grating on the ginger's nerves and the fact that she apparently didn't understand her own position here was appalling at best. Part of her wondered if this was all intentional. If that had been the case then it was her best interest with every intention of quash that afterthought. However the next statement following the initial one had resonated significantly better with the redhead considering the absence of that impish demeanor.
Adrian didn't care for the fact that her mumble was taken to heart, meaning every word of it regardless of it was heard. The fact that it had allowed the woman to get into the heart of the matter with straight answers was a bonus. It was to the point and not some elaborate life story she didn't care about and that much was appreciated. That said, the coarse woman could only sigh at the answer provided afterwards. Perhaps she should have been annoyed by that answer, been more interested in some sort of stronger conviction than monetary gain, but it was realistic and to that Adrian couldn't argue. It was understandable and commissioner herself could somewhat relate. Though the rangers didn't get paid much it was better than flaunting oneself trying to leech onto others.
"You aren't going to get much of it if you keep this up," she'd supply nonchalantly, though with some lack of the scathing tone she held previously. Of course, it certainly didn't change the ginger's opinion of the cadet, but somehow narrowly had her escape from the woman's wrath. That said, once the list of reasons not to discharge the cadet was spoken with such flippant certainty there was another scoff to be had. "You deduced all that from the short amount of time you've been here, have you?" An offhanded comment once again as she began deleting the photos of her office from the phone. "I can see why you're part of the forensics team."
All of the statements were true to some extent, the ginger hardly caring about her glaring lack of popularity within the ranks and the disdain for paperwork did bring some annoyance to her features. That said it wasn't as if Adrian hadn't dismissed higher up rangers for less and if it weren't for their shortage of personnel then it wasn't below her to terminate the brunette. Plus the answer was intriguing in and of itself. They were all reasons that were aimed to dissuade her personally and not promoting her assets to the rangers in the slightest. Which meant one of two things generally, though again couldn't be given the faintest notion to care. The final statement however, the ma'am part, had the ginger seething as she made doubly sure that the images of her office were not saved via cloud storage or whatever else. Thus once she had established that everything was thoroughly deleted, there was an offer to hand back her phone that - if taken - would be followed with a swift chop of the opposite hand to the top of her head. "I'll let you off with a warning but try something like that again and it'll end up much worse next time."
