we burn in fire. we burn in blood. we burn in dreams.
It had been a relatively cool and calming day with the clouds floating overhead and the breeze drifting by on the ocean waves. The only problem was that ranger work was piling up as the days went by. Then the poor saps that happened to be around was stuck doing all of it. Unfortunately, it looked to be that Adrian had been one of those saps as she wound up in the Ranger HQ to. All she wanted to do was drop off her reports and leave as soon as possible so she could have enjoyed some time off. Now she was walking through HQ toting several files for missions that needed to be done. They were requesting that she look over each one and take missions that were plausible to do with her schedule, which was funny considering she could have thrown those files back in their face, but due to her rank she reluctantly agreed. So now she was in the lobby rifling through the papers while halfheartedly overhearing gossip and conversations around her. Adrian wasn’t important enough to have an actual office at HQ, though that could also be attributed to the fact that she rarely came to HQ to begin with.

[attr="class","mtnsndb"]voices would parade over him as he sat there in a chair, unable to retaliate, to defend himself, to make excuses. eyes wouldn't deter away, meeting them, challenging them at every moment and turn as he sat quietly. a part of him wanted to lash out, to just throw the chair across the room, but he knew that would only get him into more trouble. he had done enough, damaged enough reputations to know that he was in the wrong here.[break][break]
but still, it killed him inside to simply sit there and do absolutely nothing.[break][break]
the screaming would eventually end as he stood up. badge and stylus were placed in front of him, basically tossed onto the table with little show of respect before leaving the room. suspended. over a simple mistake, killing the cat was not his intention; attacking the rangers was however, and that he couldn't deny.[break][break]
a locker would creak open as he placed his uniform inside, changing out of his work clothes and into more casual ones; plain white shirt and pants. there was nothing left for him to do at hq now, but sunnyshore was a city that had lots of attractions, the beach being the main one. he walked out of the locker room and into the hallway, walking ever so slowly through hq. he heard the whispers, the gossips, most of it about him, to which he could only roll his eyes and try his best to ignore them. something in the lobby did attract his attention, however.[break][break]
"need a hand?" he asked as he approached a girl who seemed to be occupied with papers, more missions he assumed. "i'm rory," he introduced, sticking out a hand that was accompanied by a charming smile. low snickering could be heard from a distance, more gossip about him no doubt. a quick glance at them would silence them for now. he turned his attention back to the girl before asking another question.[break][break]
"you free after this? to grab drinks in town, or whatever."

There were many rumors associated with the whispers around her. Some of them were of no consequence, like unnecessary speculation of details concerning the current commissioner. Others were about current events that caused issued to the rangers. Personally Adrian tried to ignore everything that did not concern her directly somehow, but did catch wind of a ranger killing a pokemon. That in and of itself was against their creed - though if that was not bad enough the perpetrator also resisted arrest knowing what that would mean. Of course this could have been rumors with no basis to them but she did recall some commotion during her time at the Battle Cup. Either way it was not a good look. It was not as if Adrian was a person to judge however. Her personality also got some unwanted attention in Headquarters though frankly she did not interact with many rangers to begin with to gather any points in popularity.
Yet almost as if on cue a male voice entered her ears and instinctively the redhead looked up to see who it was. Looking him over, Adrian did not recognize his name or his face. That was expected considering. She'd pause to consider which was when he gave a name to her. At first it did not click, though she did notice the snickering nearby that stopped as quickly as it started. Then everything turned for the worst at the next words. At first the woman paused and glanced around her to make sure that this was being directed to her and not someone else nearly. After establishing this she sighed, thinking she should have wore her hat today.
"Do I look free?" she said somewhat cynically at the newcomer while motioning to the files in her lap. Even if she had been free, the likelihood she would have said yes was nonexistent. Luckily she didn't mention anything like that. She would have shaken his hand if not for the paperwork currently occupying her. When she did free a hand she reached over to accept the handshake reluctantly and in that moment the thought clicked. "You're that one guy that attacked another ranger aren't you?" She was still holding his hand at this point.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]word traveled fast apparently as the girl recognized or at least heard of him. he would have preferred 'that one guy who killed a persian' since he could say that that was nothing but an accident, it wasn't preemptive. the assault on the ranger he had no excuse for. "no, i don't think so. i heard that guy's suspended now," he replied, hand still grasping hers as he spoke. "i don't think it was his fault though. the ranger had it coming," he added. all he said were partial truths mixed in with lies, but from context she could definitely assume that he was talking about himself. but in his eyes he did no wrong, only the slight assault, maybe.[break][break]
the man didn't recognize her, even though he most likely should have, seeing as she was an elite. but that was one issue of the man, he paid little to no attention to the rangers and even went out of his way to ignore some of them. but even if he knew of her rank he wouldn't act much different, he wasn't one to show much respect to his peers. [break][break]
"no, that's why i offered a hand," he replied, hand still in hers. he would try to pull away but instead he took it as a challenge of sorts of who could hold on the longest. "it looks like you need a break," he added. he'd lower himself so that he matched eye level with her, which coincidentally also made it much easier should she feel the need to punch him in the face.[break][break]
"come on, we're already holding hands. work can wait."[break][break][break]

The denial of the accusation she gave made her scoff slightly. "Oh really?" she said halfheartedly as she held eye contact. There was no proof to assert her accusation sure, but the response sure made it sound like he was guilty. Now not only did he lie to her face but also showed little to no remorse for the event. It really made the woman wonder if he had been properly reprimanded yet if at all. Biting down on her tongue to keep herself from saying anything just yet, she was curious as to what else he had to say. Rather than being blessed with any further explanation, truthful or not, instead what came were more flirtatious remarks.
By gods this guy was worse than that Arkwright guy somehow. At least Arkwright had some semblance of being smooth and working the 'I'm younger than 12 think I'm cute' vibe. This was just bold and stupid. He even lowered his face down to his level which made her think she was being looked down upon. That alone made her feel like a vein was going to pop soon. Regardless she did not loosen her grip and actually somewhat strengthened it. "So you think that its wrong to assault someone if they had it coming?" she questioned this first and would wait for even an inkling of a response before continuing her the next step.
Punching him in the face.
It was with her left hand as her right hand was preoccupied with holding the man in place in case he tried to evade it. Unfortunately her left was also the one bandaged up, hidden under her long sleeve from the burn incident at Amity Square, but it should have still caused damage. In turn some of the files in her lap fell to the floor - the distance wasn't enough to cause the papers inside to fly everywhere. As for the spectators she wasn't hiding anything here, but he was essentially giving her permission to do it at this stage of the game. Her right hand remained gripping Rory's hand too.
"I'm Adrian by the way. Did you forget that obstructing official business was also against our code?"
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]normally the male would be much better at approaching a woman, though his common targets were much different than the one in front of him today. he wasn't what was causing him to act this way; was it bottled up feelings regarding the entire situation? he couldn't be sure, and he didn't want to find out. he was a master of bottling up his feelings and one day letting it explode violently, most likely causing a scene and also a mess.[break][break]
"no, i think that--" words were cut off when the punch came in, hitting him square on the cheek, the impact leaving a nice cut right below his eye as he recoiled back. though his feet remained planted on the ground, his right hand still locked with hers, stopping him from falling backwards. he was quick to regain his balance and composure, his left hand reaching up to touch the sensitive wound under his eye.[break][break]
"okay i probably deserved that," he laughed, not even angry or annoyed about the punch. he was always expecting to get hit, to be honest. even he understood that his words drove people mad. "adrian is a good name, i like it." he ignored the second half of what she said, instead simply shrugging his shoulders at her. she wasn't going to reprimand him, and besides, he was already suspended, and he doesn't think something that petty could give him his third and final strike.
"you throw a good punch, who taught you?" he asked, keen on making conversation with the girl. his right eye would twitch every now and then, pain resonating from the cut. "but i didn't take you as someone who sucker punches," he chuckled. his grip around her hand tightened. "let me buy you a drink."[break][break][break]

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
It was almost impressive how quickly he recovered from the punch. Adrian was called many things but a weak puncher was not one of them. She wasn't sorry and interestingly enough the male looked as if he understood her intention. What she expected was for him to get angry. Try to unlock hands with her and storm off to report her to higher ups. Perhaps even retaliate from the rumors she had been hearing. Instead he seemed to have ignored her warning and kept talking to her, even praising her punch, as if they had suddenly become friends. He was persistent like that Arkwright which made her wonder if that was merely the running trend for men in Sinnoh.
She flexed the fingers of her left hand after the punch as if preparing to deliver another one sooner rather than later. Noticing the twitch in his eye, she'd glance over the injury before looking at him as a whole. "You obviously don't know me that well then," she responded simply. The woman was not one to always do things by the books, whatever way achieved desired results then so be it. It was always about balancing the benefits versus the repercussions of actions, but that was life. Maybe he didn't understand that.
Again with the drinks thing. Admittedly Adrian could have used one to drown out the annoyance and the stress but definitely not from someone that was likely using it to 'get to know her better'. Even Arkwright knew when to stop. "You can't be serious." Her tone almost sounded threatening. The grip on her hand tightened, her eyes glancing down instinctively then flitted back to their original position. It came to the point that it was like a competition on who would relent first and unless something more pressing came up, Adrian wasn't going to back down. "Unlike you, some of us have work to do. Partly because of your little stunt." While she said it in a way that might have implied she would have if not for work, she had absolutely no intention to agree either way. It was merely unfortunate for her that the work happened to be sitting on her lap - and partly on the floor.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]"no i don't know you! that's why i'm trying to ask you out," he replied, voice reeking of sarcasm which would not likely sit well with the girl. the man was no stranger to punches, even his face now was littered with wounds that were healing, one on his jaw, one on his chin, and another on his left cheek, courtesy of the trainer from the battle cup. this new wound did hurt however, the punch from the girl was much stronger than he had expected.[break][break]
"i am serious," he affirmed. he wasn't the type to back down, not one to give in when faced with a challenge, and this definitely was one. an uphill climb, if one will. even then neither grips loosened, instead both tightening as words were exchanged. his eyes stared up at hers, basically glaring at her as he listened. her words rang true and cut deep despite whatever intentions she might have had or implications she might carry. he nodded, pretty much agreeing with her but no response was voiced just yet.[break][break]
instead he reached below her to pick up the files off the ground, gathering them in his free hand before placing them back onto her lap. "here, you dropped these." he wanted to take a seat next to her but refrained from doing so just yet. "my little stunt was not intentional. fuck, haven't you accidentally killed a pokemon?" he asked, a small amount of annoyance seeping through. though his little stunt could refer to the resisting arrest charge as well, but he ignored that for now.[break][break]
"how about this; i help you with a mission then we go out for drinks," he offered. he doubted that she knew he was suspended, not yet anyways. but that might prove to be a problem should she accept his offer. even then, he remained level with her, eyes staring, mouth smirking.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Holy Hell he was persistent. She had the right mind to deliver another left hook in hopes he'd get the message. At this rate she'd probably get the message to Unova and back faster than this. Nevertheless he reaffirmed himself and his apparent interest in her to which she rolled her eyes and sighed. No props were given but she did make a mental note of this trait. As Rory glared into Adrian's eyes, her own fierce gaze did not break either. Adrian was pretty sure she got a good read on him already and while she wanted to deliver another punch to his face, she'd refrain for now as the files that fell previously were redelivered into her lap.
Now he would try to defend himself, affirming that he was the culprit everyone in headquarters were gossiping about right now (not that she had a doubt). He sounded exasperated but he deserved the exasperation from how much he was causing her. "No, I can't say I have," she replied curtly. She was going to say 'I couldn't say I've attacked a fellow ranger either' but that would have been a lie since she seconds before punched Rory in the face. Thus she refrained from that line of thought since it could have been thrown right back at her, though mentally the resisting arrest part was prominent in her mind. Then it came. The offer to help her on a single mission in exchange for going out for drinks.
This wasn't going to end well.
"Are you even competent enough to take up a mission? I don't want to have to the mission and babysit at the same time." Nevermind that Rory was older. She didn't know that and probably never would based purely on how he acted. Of course he was correct in assuming that Adrian had no idea that he was suspended. It was not as if she kept up with what was going on with the other rangers that didn't affect her. That said she doubted he'd even be of use. If they had not asked him to do missions then there was probably a good reason that the mission files were in her lap and not his. Plus after he admitted that he killed a pokemon, even on accident, it probably would have caused more harm than good as his lack of capability was proven.
The woman would exhale a heavy breath as her left hand unfurled from its balled up state to return to the paperwork. On the other hand it might be a learning opportunity for the male if he could... you know... actually do his job properly. It was true that she couldn't do all these missions herself anyway. "Prove yourself and I'll consider it. Doubt that'll happen considering what I've been hearing around here in the past ten minutes." That last part might have been to provoke him, but it was true.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]the man always got annoyed when people questioned his abilities. sure he's fucked up more than a couple of missions and arrests but his track record was still decent. the jobs he gets done he does well, or mostly well, at least. the word babysit made him chuckle, gaze still locked as he nodded. "how do you think i've escaped being fired before? i must be good at what i do," he replied. either that or he was just the spoiled rich kid and firing him would cause the rangers a lot of problems. either or.[break][break]
when asked to prove himself he simply raised an eyebrow. "i'll prove it on the mission we go on," he suggested, mostly because he didn't have any idea how he could prove it right now. he could do one of the many missions she had in her lap but that would take time, and he couldn't technically do one right now without getting into even more trouble. but he still could technically do it.[break][break]
"fine." he stood back up and slid into the seat next to her, hand following him, both of their hands now held over the file. his arm basically crossed his body as he sat on her right. with his left hand he'd place it across his chest, basically crossing his arms just without the right one. "you know i'm not going to let go until you pick a mission," he said, grip on hers squeezing at the end as a smile danced across his lips.[break][break]

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
He had a point. How hasn't he been fired yet? She could hardly believe it was due to him actually being decent at being a ranger. Nevertheless he was adamant about going on a mission together for whatever reason. Adrian chalked it up to him being unable to do a mission without backup or else risk failing and not - you know - not being allowed to. In the end he agreed to prove himself and do a mission to which the ginger would raise a brow. Was this actually happening? She figured he would have bailed by now.
Before Adrian could get another word in Rory had take the liberty of moving to the empty seat next to her, moving her arm as he did to where it was bent oddly beside her. Shooting a glare as he sat down, he announced he wasn't going to let go until she picked a mission. "Fine," she said halfheartedly despite herself. Technically she was one mission away from being considered for an admin position but she withheld that information for now because truthfully that mattered little to her. What mattered was that she kept her pride and make the man realize his place, even if that meant putting a failed mission on her record. Rather than picking something moderately easy or even slightly difficult, her left hand went for the bottom of the stack of files. Those were likely where they would put the missions that were likely too difficult to complete. If Adrian deemed the mission to hard for her to deal with then there was no way that Rory could.
Eventually the file in question was brought forward and after pulling out the papers and reading the mission description she smirked to herself which faded as fast as it appeared. Showing the paper to the the man next to her she spoke, "This one then." There were three images of wanted criminals lined at the top of the page with their names at the bottom of each photo and the mission description followed. These profile pictures were the same ones posted around the region calling for their arrest. Adrian herself wasn't around at the time these three terrorized Floaroma Town but she had heard about it. The mission? Tracking them down and capturing even one of them.
"Lena Ruddy, Aster Twain, and Liam Summers. All you have to do is capture one and I'll let you buy me drinks." There was no way he'd actually be able to do it. Part of her expected him to back out right then and there but considering his persistence he might actually agree.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]his persistent efforts would finally pay off as she agreed to go on a mission. eyes would watch delicately as her hand went to flick through the various files on her lap, eventually ending up with one as a piece of paper was held out in front of him. a quick glance would tell him that the people on it were wanted in some way or form, though why they were wanted was still an unknown to him. he didn't follow the news well enough to know what each one of them did, only that they were criminals and that they were dangerous.[break][break]
but still, for her to ask him to take on this mission meant that she was setting him up for failure. "are you serious?" he asked, almost in disbelief as he stared at the paper. "you're setting me up to fail," he added. and as much as he would have liked to just give up and go home the man wasn't built that way. he snatched the piece of paper out of her grasp and held it in his own, eyes simply locked onto it, perplexed yet determined in a way.[break][break]
"fine." he did wonder what would happen if he failed, but they didn't agree on a repercussion before hand so he was fine. there was always a loophole around it. he handed the paper back to her, left hand raising to place around his jaw and chin as he thought to himself. this was a cold case, that was for sure. he had no idea where to even start, but he'll try his best.[break][break]
"where do we start?" he asked, like a lost person looking for directions, eyes shifted onto her as he remained leaned forward in his seat.
IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
As the man looked over the paper the expression on his face was almost priceless. His reaction told her that he knew there was no way it would actually happen. When asked if she was serious, all she did was offer a shrug. He wasn't wrong. "You told me to pick one and I did. What would be the point if I chose something easy?" she questioned in a serious tone. What surprised her was when he had taken the paper from her hands. While it wasn't exactly polite, Adrian wasn't one to care much about manners. The woman waited for him to admit defeat and give up. Instead he spoke a single word. "Fine."
He actually did it. Adrian held back a chuckle and shook her head instead. What did he think would happen? "Good question. You tell me hotshot. You did say you were capable," this time her tone shifted to sound more like a taunting challenge. Of course Adrian had no idea either - she had no intention of taking this mission in the first place until this happened. Taking the rest of the files off her lap, her eyes wandered off to the other rangers nearby that were gossiping earlier. News tended to travel fast and with how much gossip she heard, perhaps the first step was asking if there were any clues to one of their whereabouts.
The other option was to aimlessly wander in search for them in every city with only a photo of each of them as their lead. That said it would have taken weeks with that method and honestly she doubted she could handle more than a day of this guy. With that in mind she tried to evade this option, "these guys last attacked Floaroma. They might be hiding out in one of the nearby cities like in Jubilife or Oreburgh... or is that too easy?" Again another shrug. "Now are you actually going to let go like you said?"
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]ideas ran wild in his head as he thought of where to start, where to possibly begin on this impossible journey on capturing these criminals. he would easily fall for her taunts, getting worked up at the possibilities. "i am capable," he affirmed, though more to himself than to her as a hand went up to cup around his mouth, his other hand still around hers. his eye still twitched as the cut pinged in pain, though more so numbing out now. an audible 'hmm' resonated from the man.[break][break]
he might have gotten lost in thought, her words going in one ear and right out the other. it wasn't until her final question that he turned to look at her. "oh, nah i like this," he chuckled as he kept hold of her hand, though he expected her to pry it away not too long after. then an idea struck him.[break][break]
the man didn't actually have to catch them, just going on this mission meant that the girl would have to tag along with him. and maybe it was her stubbornness but he wanted to get back at her for being so tough to break, and if that meant annoying her the whole time on a mission then so be it. so he picked the option that would give him the most time with her, the most tedious option.[break][break]
"jubilife and orebugh, right?" he asked, remembering that she mentioned something about the two cities. with her hand still in his he'd look at her, smirk bright on his face as he spoke. "i guess we'll just have to walk around and question people, see if they've seen any of them around." and with that he'd stand back up, pretty much dragging her hand and arm along with him as he stood in front of her, ears still picking up the murmurs and whispers that came from the other rangers behind them.
