| we burn in fire. we burn in blood. we burn in dreams. Beep-beep.
The device vibrated at the same time it made that sound, text flashing on the screen momentarily before disappearing in the dark.
Beep-beep.
There it goes again, shifting the previous block of text with another one. This same chain has been going on for the last five minutes and at this point it made Adrian grow from mildly annoyed to irritated. The ranger had been on duty and so it was expected of her to be receiving and responding to messages. Thing is – that was not her strong suit. Today was one of the worst cases of chain messages to the point that Adrian was tempted to dunk her tablet into the sizable fountain in front of her and drown it in a fire. Instead she sighed as she scrolled through to the first message.
Today the woman was wearing her ranger gear consisting of rather baggy looking clothing and a hat that hid her long hair beneath it. Dressed like this it was easy to mistake her for a male, not that she cared one way or another. Tilting her cap forwards to cover her eyes from the bright rays of sunlight, she read the first message the best she could. Then the next hoping it had less tedious information. This continued a few more times until Adrian had enough of it halfway through. Some of the reports and assignments weren't even for her. Why was this happening?
Beep-beep.
Almost instinctively she threw the tablet on the park bench near her. She needed a break.

"it looks like you're enjoying yourself." lily leaned over the bench and peered curiously at the phone adrian had thrown on the bench. she had did her best to sneak up on the other female after she had spotted her from where she was patrolling. the ranger gear she was sporting also made her stick out like a sore thumb. she almost didn't recognize the other since they had only truly seen each other while they were in training-- even then, it wasn't even much interaction between the two. she had been too busy trying not to fail back then.
luckily she passed, was now patrolling different towns, and doing different tasks her supervisors required of her. jonathan had left a couple hours ago to take care of business and she was beyond bored. so doing what she always does, lily left and went sight-seeing. of course, she was supposed to be on duty and patrolling around town but no one had to know. technically she could patrol and explore a museum or two while they were close by.
the park was only her third stop in the town and she wasn't expecting to meet a familiar face. lily grinned and hopped over the bench, landing to sit on the other side from the girl. she hoped the other didn't mind that she invited herself to sit down. "i'm guessing your phone is blowing up too?" her phone was stuffed away in her bag with the volume on silent. she had to remind herself later to actually check it to see if her brother had called. oops.

| we burn in fire. we burn in blood. we burn in dreams. Indeed the sudden drop in was certainly unexpected. If the other woman had caught her on a different day then she would have been shocked or some extent of surprised. She still was, her emerald eyes tilting to the side to make contact, but it didn't show on her expression. Instead she was so checked out for the day that with a mental shrug the ginger watched the other ranger take the seat by her in the most athletic way possible. It was dangerous but with the stunts that she watched the girl do during training (against Adrian's will mind you) she said nothing about it. If she had yet to break a bone then that likely wasn't going to change anytime soon if that luck was steadfast.
"Was that sarcasm?" She asked halfheartedly to the comment. It better have been or else Adrian would have had to learn a better way to convey her disdain. Nevertheless she leaned against the back of the seat to make herself comfortable. She wasn't on break but she might as well have been from the lack of pertinent information being provided to her. It wasn't unusual that more than one ranger was sent out to patrol a single area, that's what she guessed Lily was here for as well, but running into each other was definitely not in her plans.
She motioned to the device that was still vibrating intensely on bench to provide a response, "unfortunately." Now it wasn't as if the two of them were tight or anything. To Adrian however they were both ranger cadets together so she had to be somewhat decent. Even if she knew Lily to be crazy. After meeting Jonathan earlier though she did hope there was a shred of chill in the girl's body. It had to be better than talking to stupid civilians that lit parks on fire at least.

lily grinned at the question thrown her way and gestured to adrian's expression. "whaaaaat? nooooo. you got that whole "i want to be here and i love talking to people" vibe going on." her back rested against the bench to get herself comfortable as she turned to look around the park. the job came with its fair share of idiots and she was learning to realize that not everyone was as smart as she thought they were. but a job was a job and she can't say she wasn't enjoying it so far. there was so many places she had not visited yet and being a ranger made it possible for her to travel from city to city.
that didn't mean that the job didn't come with its downfalls. adrian's phone was still buzzing intensely on the park bench and she could only imagine the amount of messages she would have to check when she turned hers on again. she hoped that it wasn't something specifically for her.
lily looked back from her people watching to adrian when she inquired about why she was alone. "jonathan had some business to take care of so i decided to walk around and do some sight-seeing. it's the first time i've been in this city and it's been awesome so far." she was tempted to pull out her phone and show the girl all the pictures she took but that would involve turning it on and getting hit with all the messages; something she didn't want to do at the moment. adding on to the fact that she wasn't sure adrian would appreciate her shoving photos in her face.
"did you travel a lot before becoming a ranger? this is our first time leaving snowpoint so i'm taking in as much as i can."

give it up IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT Normally the woman would have shot a glare at the girl and said something less than friendly. That said as of the moment she was too tired to care, only managing to roll her eyes at the response. The woman did not bother to ask if the other ranger was off duty. She sort of assumed as much considering her phone was buzzing and the other did not look as if they even knew anything about it past earlier today. For the moment they could share the bench and ignore the pleasant sound of buzzing from new notifications. When Lily responded to her comment about being alone, she received more information that she anticipated. Jonathan was the brother that Adrian learned existed earlier that week and so far had no issues with. The fact that he had business to take care of and she didn't was peculiar but the woman chalked that up to ranger duties. The strange thing was when the black haired girl stated it was her first time in the city - to which Adrian rose a brow to. That said she didn't question it and the girl kept talking the older ranger expected her to. Getting posted the question, she kept a mental note that the girl was from snowpoint as she responded. "I was born and raised in Kalos but I can't say I traveled much during my time there. I started a pokemon journey when I arrived at Sinnoh but the extent in which I traveled is still limited." The ginger shrugged. "Now answer me this. If you and your brother are from Snowpoint then why are you both here as rangers?" From what little Adrian knew, she thought that the people of snowpoint liked to keep to themselves and didn't much travel around.

lily listened as adrian explained where she was from. she had always wanted to go to kalos but never had the oppurtunity to. the only thing she could do was see pictures and watch tv of events that went on there. she had always asked her parents if they could take a family vacation to another region; hell she would have been happy going to a place as simple as kanto. but her parents would always share a look before telling her one day they would. she didn't understand back then but she did now. having a fishing business didn't really bring in the funds for going on vacation.
but adrian had at least traveled more than she had. she had never left the region and this was her first time out of snowpoint. she hoped that one day she would be able to travel to somewhere like kalos.
lily opened her mouth to ask about kalos when she was hit with a question that made her pause. why were they there as rangers? "our family runs a fishing business and jonathan was supposed to take it over when he got old enough. to no one surprise, he didn't want to and decided to become a ranger instead." lily glanced towards the park and watched some of the people walk by with their pokemon. "i thought that it was a cool idea too so i followed right behind. our parents weren't very happy about it." the thought made her smile at the way she told her dad that she was leaving with jonathan.
"so far i'm enjoying it. i like helping people and i get to travel so that's a bonus." she didn't expect being a ranger to be so fun. she had met all kinds of people and pokemon during her time here. with one last glance at the people, she turned her attention back to adrian with a sheepish smile. "i didn't mean to tell you my life story. what about you? do you like it so far?"

give it up IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT Fishing? In snowpoint? The information had the woman look over in mild interest. From what Adrian understood, the town was iced over twenty four seven. If that was the case then they must have had an ice fishing business. The woman would carefully watch the girl's expression as she appeared to reminisce about the past. It was good to know in the off chance it would become pertinent to know down the line. That said the choice to become a ranger as an excuse to get away from home was an interesting one. One that Adrian was not sure she agreed with. Her own parents wanted her to discover what she wanted to do in life and somehow she ended up here. From the sounds of things it was not the same situation. But it wasn't her business so she wouldn't interfere with their personal lives. Lily expanded on the fact that she was enjoying it so far to which Adrian spared another glance. As long as they were having fun and could sustain their lifestyle, then it didn't matter. That said the girl appeared to catch herself, trying to shift the topic back to Adrian. Obliging for the moment the ginger thought back on her experiences only to feel more heated as she spoke. "No." That probably wasn't a good answer coming from Adrian and her current rank. Now the answer didn't stem from the hours or the work involved. It involved the people. "There's something wrong with people here. I've been hit on several times this month, once by a guy that set me on fire." Her anger was getting the best of her as she remembered the event. Back during her time in Kalos, she wouldn't have as much issues with people like she was having now. Not that she was the best person in terms of socializing in general. Trying to calm down, the woman shifted around in her seat before turning to the other ranger. Adrian knew she was younger and a rather... eccentric according to the brother, but part of her wanted to ask anyway. "Are you having that problem?"

"o-oh." was lily's only response as she stared wide eyed at adrian's abrupt answer. it wasn't the response she was expecting but she can't say that she's all that surprised. she couldn't imagine adrian actually enjoying being a ranger since it involved interacting with people. it wasn't to say that adrian wouldn't be amazing at her job-- just that she didn't seem much of a people person.
but look like she was wrong considering the other female was quite popular among the rangers. someone even managed to set her on fire...however that worked. maybe it's because you're so hot? is what lily wanted to say but kept it to herself. she didn't imagine the other appreciating her teasing especially when she looked so angry just thinking about it. it was a little funny and she would laugh except she didn't want to get punched in the face. this was the longest conversation she had with the girl so far and she wanted it to end nicely.
"i can't say i've been set on fire yet." she didn't know any of the other rangers that well or had ran into any of them after training. she had mostly traveled and kept to herself, enjoying her new freedom alongside doing whatever job they threw at her. she could almost say she was happy that she had not met anyone else yet from what adrian was telling her. "well, you are pretty so i think you would get some compliments coming your way. the fire thing however, you should probably stay away from him. he's no good." no seriously, how did someone set her on fire?

give it up IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT Lily showed her shock at her answer and Adrian caught onto it. There was little she cared to do about it as everything that was being said is true. She could tell the other girl was mulling over how to respond to her. Couldn't blame her either. The woman was complaining about her grievances. It came as a shock when the next things that Lily said weren't a joke or a jab at her. Adrian rose a brow at that. Then she would sigh as the girl would answer her question the wrong way, likely purposely. "That's not what I meant you know," she grumbled from her position, her hand supporting her head as she leaned on the bench arm. Now don't get me wrong. It was good Lily had not been set on fire yet. That was a fate that the woman would not wish on anyone except the lowliest of scum. With Lily's personality however Adrian was more surprised that she didn't take it upon herself to jump into burning buildings with her newfound job title giving her that excuse. Hey, maybe she had and simply had gotten lucky not to get burnt. Adrian would never know. The ginger would brush off the comment about her being pretty, not taking it seriously in the slightest, but understanding the reasoning. That was not the issue. The ssue was the persistence that came with the flirtation. "Believe me, if I could I will," the older ranger would respond with a huff. After their first encounter, Adrian thought that might have been the last she would see of him. This turned out to be wrong and she was coming to realize that the task was easier said than done. Getting the affirmation from Lily that she should stay away from this guy helped settle her anger a bit though. Having someone listen did ease things. "That isn't even the half of what he's done. I would be more than happy to be rid of him." She tried not to remember more than that for the sake of her own blood pressure, but if Lily ask she would most definitely tell.
