major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
There was no way to get out of the deep shit she had put herself in, not now, not ever. What started with a small fling in Floaroma had evolved into this... monster of a problem. her big slip up had made news headlines, again. if she wasn't a ranger before she was most definitely stripped of any and all privileges now. she was definitely on some kind of watch list, no doubt about it. regardless, she's taken her leave to follow where Liam's aerodactyl leads her, trailing behind the monster on her own pokemon, doing her best to keep her mind clear, to keep a smile on her face.
hell, she wasn't even sure if he was alive. was she being lead to a corpse? lena feels her jaw tense up, feels her stomach turn over as solaceon town comes into view. the hospital catches her eye-- the ancient bird lands on top of it, stretching its wings as it waits for the next move. lena takes a breath, lands, and enters, eyes frantically searching anything and everything- any signs, any people, any blanket-covered gourneys.
relief comes when she's pointed in the right direction, sweating bullets as she nudges open the door without bothering to knock. "h-hey.." she doesn't even know if he'll be awake or not; her voice is a rasp, barely audible. she has to say it again, practically clinging on to the door way as a crutch. her knees feel weak, and she's sure the color is drained from her skin.
so many tubes. too many machines. her free hand clutches a pokeball, knuckles turning white under her relentless grip. so many things to say, such little capacity to speak.
everything was a blur; the hospital, the rescue, the attack. by the time the aerodactyl had delivered the spy he had fallen unconscious from the massive blood loss. hospital staff though mortified rushed to his aid, doing everything they could to stabilize him. hours was spent and in the end the spy pulled through.
efforts were made to contact his parents who were listed as his emergency contact. the numbers listed were not in use anymore, something the spy was responsible of. in case something like this ever happened he did not want his parents to know, to worry, to drop everything for him. unfortunately he had no control over a certain girl.
the spy was confined to a bed, his upper body heavily bandaged up running across his chest then down towards his abdomen. his left leg, wrapped in a cast unable to move even slightly. tubes ran everywhere, machines beeping in the background as the spy struggled to breathe, the cut making it difficult.
he was still unconscious, the girl's entrance and words not meaning anything right now. all the spy could do was lie lifeless. soon a nurse came into the room, addressing the girl before explaining his condition to her; broken shin, deep cut across the chest, problems breathing, but stable. the spy would not be awake for hours at least, and that was what the nurse told her.
what she did after that was entirely her own decision.
She can't breathe. Not even a little bit, not through the muffled sobs into her palm. She's left alone next to him, elbows propped on the edge of the hospital bed-- she's useless. "I-I'm sorry," she practically chokes on her words; her face is a disaster, and she's too caught up in her own grief to think about washing it.
Hours until he's awake. Lena doesn't know if she can bear to last that long before she cries herself into her own coma, but she's resilient on trying.
You should have been there.
That battle was pointless.
He could be gone.
You got lucky.
Over, and over, and over, ringing in her skull like a bell. Lena doesn't realize that she's fallen asleep until she wakes up to a rising sun. Her eyes are puffy, face tear-stained, nose still runny. She doesn't move, not even a little bit. She's too scared to look up and see him lying there, just as lifeless. Sure, hours have passed, but that doesn't make her any less terrified.
Th-thump.
Her heart beat pulses in her ears as the headache takes over. Thin fingers grip onto the hospital sheets-- red, irritated eyes fall on the pokeball she had held so closely before, now on the ground near her feet. A body guard.
then came morning, sunlight shining through thin blinds. birds chirped in the background but seemed to be filtered out by the beeping machines. he awoke, though eyes remained closed. for a moment he was confused, lost, and then suddenly he remembered; remembered the confrontation, the torture, everything. he didn't dare open his eyes, afraid of what he might see, what he's forced to become.
but eventually they opened, eyes blinded by the light for a moment. he blinked, vision adjusting. he saw everything, the bandaged body, the broken leg, the oxygen mask on him. he tried to move his arms, soon realizing that he wasn't alone.
for a brief moment he was happy, glad that she was here, glad that she was safe. following that came a rush of emotions; guilt, sorrow, pity. he was useless, weak, not even able to move, he did not want to be seen like this, to be remembered like this. eyes welled up, tears fell, running down the side of his face. then came the sobbing, pain resonating with each sob, and for some reason he couldn't control it; not the sobbing, not the crying. he didn't dare look at the girl, his head turning away from her, the side of his face resting on the pillow now, tears staining it.
he shut his eyes. he couldn't handle being like this, so maybe if he shut his eyes everything will go away.
His breathing changes- she almost calls a nurse, thinking something has happened with his lungs, or heart. Brain? Anything. Anything can kill him right now, and Lena is immediately furious with herself for falling asleep on the job. Her comrades could send anything to slaughter him right now, and here she was, just waking up. Lena springs to life as tears begin to run down his face, after watching every little movement to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. First a single digit makes contact with his cheek, her thumb wiping away what it can before the storm gets worse. "Nonono, don't, you'll just hurt.." there's no reasoning with emotions, not when the brain was recovering from a hard hit.
She crawls on the cot, doing her best to stay against his side, away from any tender areas. She's half hanging off, but it doesn't matter. She's closer. She can be there. He can't look at her-
is he disgusted? with her actions? lena hesitates, gentle touch pulling away as she realizes that she may be doing more harm than good. "i-i can go, if you want." there's a lump in her throat behind the offer, but if it's what's best for him then so be it.
her touch felt cold at first but accompanied by her voice slowly became warmer. he felt her move closer, her embrace managing to calm him, the sobbing lessening as he tried to get control of his emotions. he relished her embrace for as long as it lasted, and when she pulled away another wave of emotions came rushing in but the most prominent was loneliness.
the cardiac monitor jumped, heart rate increasing at the loss. he realized no matter how much he hated himself he couldn't bare losing her and that she was ultimately here for him. his eyes opened, head tilting back over to look at her. seeing the girl caused another jump, heart rate at a high. eyes would try to meet hers, the change of heart rate now gaining the attention of nurses.
"n-no..." he struggled to speak, words barely audible under the mask instead just causing it to fog up. he couldn't speak with this thing covering his mouth, so a hand slowly went to attempt to lift it, tubes and wires shifting as he moved. "stay..." he spoke, the mask slightly lifted. the lack of oxygen caused him to cough, the cough causing pain, the pain causing another increase in his heart rate.
a nurse came rushing into the room. 'miss i'm going to have to ask you to leave. he needs to rest.' words were strong and firm. the spy shook his head, or at least attempted, a hand reaching out to grab her arm, eyes conveying a message words couldn't.
she wants to scream, wants to fight back, wants to trash away as she's lead out by the arm. he was awake her mind repeats this, over and over, clinging to it as some form of comfort as the beep of the heart monitor haunt her outside of the room. lena slumps to the floor, dried up tears now flowing freely once more, her face buried in her hands. they can remove her from the room, but not by his door. she can't leave-- it's too risky. lena can only take solace in the thought that his aerodactyl was on strict guard duty from above. her comfort lies in her actions seconds before being lead away-- the shrunken pokeball of the walrein had been wrapped in his hand before two nurses practically had to drag her away. lena isn't sure how many 'no's and 'i'm sorry's she had screamed before they finally got her out of the door. she's still been told she can't sit here, she has to wait in the lobby, but the houndoom standing over her snarls at anyone who dares remove her by force.
ma'am, please they're pleading now. she doesn't have long. lena wants to lash out, take Liam away, but that selfish act would likely end up getting him killed and her face officially on a wanted poster, if it wasn't already. we're going to have to call a ranger if you don't leave. she only glares up at them. you think a houndoom is the worst thing i got? it's a grunt, a shout, gruff, voice cracking from the tears. call the station.
she looks back down at the floor. it's a waiting game now.
lena hears him before she sees him, quickly finishing a text and slipping it back in her pocket as she remains slumped against the wall. romulus's snarl lets her know he's close now-- she doesn't move her position. "here to arres--"
go home.
it's enough to make her finally look up at him, face still red and eyes still puffy, nose still stuffy from the crying earlier. despite this, she's absolutely bewildered. go home? where the hell has he been this past 12 hours? was he honestly going to let her walk? it's humiliating to be seen like this, but she couldn't give any less of a shit right now. romulus steps forward. "hold." she sighs, eyes on the houndoom as it takes a seat next to her, teeth away but eyes locked on to the ranger.
"he's not safe here." she mumbles, mouth eventually falling into the inner crook of her elbow as she pulls her knees to her chest. it's occurred to her that by drawing attention to herself she only puts him in more danger, but lena refuses to think that she would ever be incapable of guarding him.
For some odd reason, Jason refrains from making the arrest. Perhaps it's the fact that there's a part of him that sympathizes with her, because she doesn't look like a criminal. She looks like someone who's been crying, red ringed around her puffy eyes.
Someone who's been mourning.
He admits that at first, he was angry at Lena. For causing such a media stir. For attacking Adrien. For outranking him when she joined. But he can't find the energy to stay mad when she looks like this, curled up in front of someone's room.
"Who isn't safe here?" Jason probes, but he's sure that she won't tell him. He sighs. He's not exactly sure what to do in this situation, because any wrong action could send her into something hostile.
He takes a couple steps closer. There's no pokemon out with him, lest he provoke her even more. Even his starter has been returned. It's a hospital, not a battle field, and he refuses to fight unless it's necessary.
"Look, I don't want to arrest you, but if you're going to keep causing a disturbance I'm going to have to."
suspicious regardless of what he says, Lena eyes the ranger up and down, glancing at the hound by her side. "target friendly," she sighs, lips cracking into a smile as the houndoom turns into a completely different pokemon. its tail wags, it smiles up at jason, trotting in circles around him, sniffing his ass (smells like Vielstone gold), all the standard happy-dog maneuvers. it finally settles on sitting in front of the ranger, eyes wide with excitement and expectation, tail beating against the floor.
Lena takes another breath to settle herself, eventually rising from her position, albeit weak. "The man in that room." It's vague, but if Jason is as smart as he claims to be then he'll have no problem figuring it out. "Nobody can know he's here. He needs to heal." and she needs a decent night's rest. Her back and neck ache, but all she can remember is Liam's look of despair for the brief moment of consciousness he experienced. She's pained, glancing toward the door, fidgeting as she stands.
"I know." She looks between his door and the direction of the lobby with a frown. "There's nothing much I can do for him right now, I guess."
That doesn't mean she won't be back tomorrow. Or the next day.
Jason looks on in confusion as the Houndoom's aggressiveness turns off like a switch, all from a couple words. He may have some choice words about Lena's position as a ranger, but she must've been a good trainer for the higher ups to even consider letting her in. His face suddenly goes blank when the dog starts sniffing near his bottom, and he nudges at it until it finally settles in front of him, like a normal dog he'd see on the street. It's suspicious as hell.
He looks past Lena when she looks back at the door, spotting the person behind the clear glass. There's ropes of wires sticking out from his bed, and a breathing mask to match. He looks deathly pale, yet startlingly familiar.
He bristles. It's the guy who yelled at him for abusing pokemon and then proceeded to hand his ass to him. He blinks at the revelation. Jason may have gotten into a scuffle with him but he doesn't deserve whatever treatment landed him in the hospital.
"Well you can start by not harassing the nurses." He snarks, hopefully breaking the tension for a little. Because it's the truth, and Lena only makes things worse for herself if she draws attention to herself.
He sighs, recalling the news that's popped up recently. "Enough to know that you're in a lot of trouble." He says. Lena hadn't stopped being in the spotlight ever since the Cranidos incident, and the news have been hounding her since.
"I don't know the whole story but you're definitely on the most wanted list right now."
the houndoom remains content as lena runs a few fingers through its warm fur, the thing panting happily, tongue out, head lolled back as it offers its neck to her-- the best place for scratches. the smiles, only a bit, before jason reminds her why he's here. "i was sitting, minding my own business-- they're the ones who were harassing me," she grumbles, ignoring the fact that she literally had a pokemon threatening every single one that tried to come near her.
leaning against the wall, talking, distracting herself seems to regain some composure for lena. "sounds like an understatement." boy, if he knew. based on his reaction with adrien from before, he'd probably have her against the wall cuffed by now. she'd do the same, if the places were reversed. She stretches, glancing back in the room every few seconds. To the side she's catch the murmurs of concerned nurses, the screech (yawn?) of the aerodactyl outside, and the humming of a muted television that had only captions. the destruction from the previous hospital was being shown.
was it really that bad?
her stomach has dropped, romulus feels the anxiety that begins to radiate off of her. he stands to attention-- danger? where's danger? a gentle hand is placed on his head as she tries to reassure the thing. if you end up hearing the whole story.. from anyone. just know there's more to it than you think. not everything is black and white, and i never had the intention to hurt anybody. i only wanted to save him." she points to the door, stepping past Jason.
Jason rolls his eyes. "That doesn't explain how you have a pokemon out." He says, motioning to the Houndoom. Not to mention what she looked like when he first came, nearly too upset to even speak with. He's glad he's taken the time to talk to her.
The staff have long stopped staring at them, reluctant to move along even though there hasn't been an arrest. The situation's mostly diffused, and he's suddenly aware of their surroundings. Murmurs from concerned patrons. The quiet buzz of the television. The screen flickers to the aftermath of the destruction of the hospital. It's bad. People are being escorted out, and he recognizes that it's Adrien's hospital, and he feels his stomach flip at the thought that he might've been injured. Again.
"...Is Adrien okay?" He asks, for once he's serious, because he honestly doesn't need anymore trouble. Jason hasn't recieved any calls from him, nor the hospital staff, and he's probably going to hurry over there after to see if everything's alright.
He narrows his eyes at her. Something doesn't seem right, and he's sure that Lena's not entirely blameless in this situation, and now that he's heard what she's said he's entirely convinced that she's batshit crazy. The lengths she's gone to 'protect' this person is practically destroying a hospital. He suddenly turns, mind changed about letting her go.
"He's fine." she turns back to him, face hard, eyes closed in frustration. "You should be asking if he" a finger violently points to the room door, "is going to be okay. Thanks to your husband, he's in that fucking bed." Hackles raise on the houndoom, red eyes narrowing at Jason as the tension rises. "You don't get to pick and choose who you're most concerned about ranger," it's a snarl, matched with the canine's. Ironic, but the title no longer applied to her. Maybe that would help him figure it out. That, and her lack of uniform.
A quick lash of a pistol and a bullet is put through the television, hitting right in the center. Alarms go off, nurses duck. Her eyes lock with his, only until she makes her sprint or the door. She doesn't wait for his response, or his call to action. The pokemon following on her heels would be recalled as the Staraptor replaces it. Glass doors open and close in record time as she climbs aboard the bird pokemon, soon taking to the sky.
