THE MESSAGE COMING FROM MY EYES SAYS, "LEAVE IT ALONE"
it occurs to isaac that, if he's admittedly a lonely man, why should his sole pokemon be any different?
it's early evening, and although he's talked himself into browsing the festival he finds himself drawn toward the quiet corners of the town instead. the quiet is relaxing. when the sparking lights of the town square are distant on his back he pauses, turns and sweeps his gaze over the distant array. it's... pretty. from this distance it seems much more inviting than it had been in person -- to many loud voices and sudden noises that kept him jittery and on edge.
it's now that he thinks to dig his pokeball out of his pocket, and opens it in a small flash of light. sage is already looking at him expectantly, and the simple little face is another small comfort. it's why he loves pokemon -- there's no prejudice there.
"the lights are nice from here, huh?"
isaac digs a cigarette out of his pocket next, and lights it while the ditto is distracted. a single deep breath through the rolled paper is yet another little comfort. maybe he'll head home soon. or maybe he'll go for a walk first, stretch his legs in the crisp evening air.
THE MESSAGE COMING FROM MY EYES SAYS, "LEAVE IT ALONE"
there's a sharp pair of ears on isaac's head -- comes from years of working as a hired thug with a trigger finger, and living constantly on guard in enemy territory. it's more than enough to catch a rustle in the nearby flower beds, and he stiffens to listen. there's little threat, but he has his stubborn habits.
sage notices the sounds, too, but the ditto jumps in rather than practicing caution. dives at the bushes before it can be stopped and sends a bird flying out into the open. shoot, he's seen that one before, hasn't he? it's... oh, right. a rufflet. he's pretty sure, anyway.
"ey, sage." he tries to call back the ditto, who flutters back over instead -- now another rufflet, without needing to be instructed. well... he supposes it's really all there is that can be done. isaac turns his attention back to the real bird that's still not far in front of him.
he pauses, though, unsure what he's supposed to do. could let it go, but he was just thinking that sage was probably lonely, and he could use more than just one pokemon of his own to run a breeding business with. that left fighting the little guy.
"a'ight," he says a little gruffly into the open night air, looking for is figurative footing in the situation. "go after it." what kind of moves would sage know from a pokemon like that? it had been a while since he'd been in a fair battle. "go after it."
it's vague but it works, because with a delighted cry the disguised ditto leaps at the rufflet with a wing attack. it hits, but the wild pokemon retaliates with an indignant peck that also manages to land. he doesn't need to tell sage to go again, because after a single glance back at its trainer it shoots for a fury attack that also lands.
one more peck toward sage that misses and a responding wing attack, and the rufflet looks worse for wear. isaac figures it's time for his part. he digs out an empty pokeball and tosses it at the wild bird. wonders if he still has a good feel for this kind of thing.
one, two, three. then the ball stills.
well, that's that, he reasons, as sage picks the sphere up and drops it in its trainer's hands. maybe it'd be a training sort of night, then. his ditto keeps at his heels as he takes one step, then another, deciding he might as well go for a bit of a walk and see what else turns up.
THE MESSAGE COMING FROM MY EYES SAYS, "LEAVE IT ALONE"
it takes isaac a moment to notice that there's already another pokemon on the field, but when it takes another step forward his sharp eyes catch the movement. it's... a larvatar. he's surprised that he'd come across one in a field of damn flowers, but he sure isn't about to complain about it. in fact, he's determined to catch that, of all things.
first things first, though -- sage is looking a little worse for wear, and he doesn't plan on letting it slide. "here." the ditto floats over, and he hastily pulls a potion out to patch it up with. it takes a moment, but the larvitar doesn't seem inclined to flee, thank arceus. a few short moments later, and they're back to the playing field.
"righ'," he clears is throat, and when he looks down, there's two larvitar before him. the foe moves first this time, with a sandstorm -- isaac doesn't flinch, but sage does. "chip away." and sage does, rushing in for an offense that brings the enemy stumbling back a step. the retaliating bite leaves a mark, but it's shaken off.
another round. "bite." when it lands the larvitar responds with a solid screech, but sage just goes in again for another go. a little bit at a time. he's determined not to be hasty, but isaac thinks he's got a good shot at it now.
a toss of another pokeball, a steely stare as the pokeball thrashes before stilling. and that was that.
THE MESSAGE COMING FROM MY EYES SAYS, "LEAVE IT ALONE"
it's a little strange to be doing something like this again, even stranger to be doing it fairly -- last he'd caught pokemon, they'd been stolen. by him. methods like these were far more enjoyable, and it turns out he'd missed this.
the larvitar was safely his now, and isaac began stepping forward again. he's beginning to take a roundabout route, one that might lead him indirectly back to his little ranch. his tall stature makes the ground rather far off, and he's tripped before -- though never over a pokemon as far as he can recall. yet here he is, a slugma seething at his feet because he nearly trampled the poor thing. oops.
"m' bad," he offers, but the fire type obviously wants to fight now, so he might as well acquiesce. sage seems adverse to transforming this time. or rather, she hasn't jumped the gun this time; isaac assumes she's rather fond of her current larvitar form. well, he can work with that, too.
"sandstorm." he steps back, and a whirlwind of sand promptly takes his place. it throws the slugma off, but only a little. it looks yet more annoyed as it delivers an ember that sage fails to dodge. without order the pseudo-larvitar tries jumping back in with its own bite, followed up by a chip away, and it sends the slugma reeling. for a moment.
unfortunately, it's not done yet -- the fire type lets out a contagious yawn that causes sage to begin to drift. try as it may the pokemon is quickly asleep, and before isaac can react, the opponent offers up a rock throw that finishes the job. poor sage is out for the count.
the tall brunette recalls the fainted companion, and it takes him a second to remember that, right, he has more than one now. he whips out a second ball at random and tosses it. out comes his new swablu, looking just a little dazed but ready to go. isaac administers a dose of potion before sending the flying type into battle.
astonish," isaac rumbles, and the blue bird does, allowing a moment of hesitation in the enemy. perfect. "fury attack.' the resulting onslaught sends the slugma falling back into the grass and left still, which gives him an opportunity to toss his second to last empty pokeball. not a minute later and he has yet another addition to his team.
THE MESSAGE COMING FROM MY EYES SAYS, "LEAVE IT ALONE"
seems conflict breeds more conflict, even in situations like these. the slugma's taken care of now, but hardly a step forward and there's a dunsparce to take its place. well... he's always had a hard time saying to to pokemon, and he figures it'll be another good bout of exercise with his new pokemon, if nothing else.
swablu looks ready to go too, so isaac doesn't waste any time. "sing," no reason to beat around the bush. the dunspace doesn't manage to dodge the melody, and it puts him out easily. now just to wear the thing down a little. "peck." he waits a few moments. "n' fury attack."
that seems to do the trick, so out flies his last vacant pokeball. a couple small rattles, and the dunsparce is his.
