he shouldn't be back here. he's sought out for help, has received it even, but he's back at the cabin again for whatever reason. maybe it's because he feels the safest here isolated from everyone else. or maybe he just has nowhere else to go. but unlike a week ago he's healthier and for once not freezing in the cold. the weather's calmed down a lot, the winds no longer making him shiver. he might be hallucinating, but he'd even say that the day looks nice.
the sun's shining down on the white surface. he trudges through the thick snow, wrapped in appropriate clothing. he needs to recover, and the first step is to simply get back up on his feet. each trudge through the snow hurts his left leg, but he needs to get used to it. arc's out of his pokeball walking next to him. the heat that resonates off the beast is enough to make him feel warmer, safer. but even then snow still falls.
his head's hidden under a hood, hands in his pockets, but nothing's covering his face. each breath he takes releases a puff of white. it's actually rather peaceful, he thinks. he shifts his gaze from the snow in front of him to the arcanine who seems to be enjoying the snow. the sight is enough to bring a small smile to his face.
things are improving. slowly, but it's something.

he tenses when he hears something shifting in the snow. it isn't him nor the arcanine, so he raises a hand and stops dead in his tracks. silence fills the air. he looks to arc, points to his ears. then he hears it, movement not too far away. he raises his index finger to his lip, tells the beast to be quiet. he's not sure if it's another human being, a pokemon, or just his imagination, but he's cautious, takes no risks. he then starts taking slow, calculated steps towards the sound. the arcanine soon follows.
he leans against the bark of a tree, signals to arc. more sounds, more movements. arc's fangs light up in preparation, embers dancing across his fangs as he awaits orders. he lets out a breath before stepping around the corner. he expects a fight to happen, expects to see an enemy. but instead he's greeted by nothing until he glances down at the snow.
buried in the snow is an ice cub, who's slashing away at the snow. all tension and urge to fight flees him and he's left with a warm feeling. he smiles at the cub, bends down to his knee despite the pain in his shin. "hey there." he greets, lets his fingers graze the surface of the snow as he observes. arc steps from around the corner too, embers fading when he realizes there is no threat. he moves closer, approaches the cub with good intentions. it doesn't seem to flinch or even care, so he reaches out even more to pat its head.
he must have been there for a while. he doesn't remember, but he ends up sat on the ground just observing the cub. it's been a while since he's seen something so pure, so innocent, untouched by the problems of the world. it reminds him of his past self, the thought bringing a smile to his face.
so young.
he decides to leave it, that it's best if it remains in the wild. no worries, no danger, just free and pure. he doesn't look back when he leaves, instead he places a hand on the mane of the arcanine. he's smiling.

he raises his hand to touch the tip of his nose in an attempt to warm it up slightly. it's getting colder, he feels the temperature starting to drop as the day nears its end. he's now directly next to the arcanine, hand placed on his mane. the beast provides a natural aura of heat that's enough to stop liam from shivering, but even then it's faint. he's just not quite ready to leave yet, to return back to the cabin that he's been held up in.
it just feels free to be out there, surrounded by nothing but white as far as the eye can see. it's a bit eerie especially with the darkening of the day but he feels safe, at least for now. it doesn't take long however until his senses are heightened again as he hears something in the distance. "arc." he whispers. the beast knows and immediately separates, walks around the trees slowly, quietly.
liam stays behind a tree again and peers around it. he sees nothing, hears nothing. he wasn't imagining it, he's sure he heard something move earlier. and he wasn't going to let it go. so he moves forward, albeit recklessly as he shifts from tree to tree without any thought to how loud he was moving. he doesn't even look to where arc is when he turns and moves around a tree to see the cause of the sound.
a delibird, buried in the snow head first unable to move. it must have fallen down from a tree or something. either way he finds the situation amusing. when arc finally shows himself from around the corner liam raises a hand. "it's fine." he bends down and scratches away at the snow that surrounds the delibird's head. he's making it thinner.
"hey, don't move." he tells the bird. he grabs it by its body and tugs once. it's enough to free the bird from the snow, and when it finally regains its composure and sees a human and an arcanine it gets frightened, hops back onto its feet and jolts off into the distance. liam doesn't even bother to give chase, instead he smiles and remains seated, back now up against the bark of a tree. he gives the ground beside him a pat.
"come on. we have all the time in the world." arc shifts closer and lets out a soft growl as he lays into the snow.

eyes open when he feels something nudging at his feet. he tenses at the sight of a snover who seems more interested in the snow underneath him. he shifts his leg to allow it to rummage through the snow beneath. he's confused, and a bit conflicted. he doesn't remember falling asleep; it's now dark but embers that dance across the arcanine's fangs give enough vision to see. he's surprised that he managed to fall asleep, but even more so when he realized that he hadn't woken up from a nightmare. it's been so long that he forgets the feeling.
"delta." he reminisces. it looks just like the snover she had, the one that he met during a battle, the one that gave it its all. he already has the evolved version, an abamasnow, but that's different, it held no memory with it. but with this snover now all of it comes rushing back. he extends out a hand like what he once did, faces his palm upwards as if asking it for a handshake. it doesn't give him one, but he didn't expect it to.
instead he smiles. for all the bad memories that he has he often forgets that he has good ones too. the memories may all end badly, but they were still good if isolated and viewed at on their own. this is one of those cases. he reaches for an empty pokeball, an action he hasn't done in a while and shows it to the snover.
"i'm taking you with me." he says. he isn't taking no for an answer, the arcanine ready to sink his teeth into it should it need to. but it looks like the snover is happy to comply, or at least it isn't retaliating. a flash of white emerges and engulfs the ice pokemon. he waits patiently until the pokeball stops shaking before bringing it close, letting his fingers grasp it tighter as he stands back up.
"delta."
