"thank you." he lets go of the dragalge and climbs hastily onto shore. he falls to the ground, lays on his back for a moment as eyes look up into the night sky. he knows he shouldn't waste precious time like this but he needs a moment to catch his breath. he feels the cold starting to get to him, the water helps amplifying the coldness. it only takes him a moment before he's back on his feet. he looks around as he shrugs his jacket off, the black attire falling effortlessly onto the ground. he sees avery over by the side, but as he approaches a booming voice stops him in his tracks.
you.
his stomach drops. he doesn't move, instead keeps still as ears listens for more. he hears water rippling, he turns to see a ball of white; unnatural, powerful. as it travels he starts to notice the calming of the gyarados. they look...frozen. he looks to koma who recently landed on shore and he too was frozen, his body locked in place by an unnatural force. the dragalage in the water, frozen too. he contemplates recalling the fire bird but he's afraid of what might happen. he looks to avery once more, takes a few steps towards her before another voice calls out to him.
he stops.
the question catches him off guard as he's forced to stand there pondering. it doesn't take him long to come up with an answer. "safety." he gives a vague answer in response. he feels like he's being watched, he turns to the ball of light assuming the voice came from there, and suddenly he feels like he should give a more concise answer. "i want the people i care about to be safe. them, not me." a part of him suspects that he can never be safe.
he raises a hand to wipe water off of his face. he crosses his arms in an attempt to preserve body heat. with an answer being given he now continues to walk forward towards avery, his eyes noticing anu frozen as well. he's afraid of what might follow but he keeps his fears hidden under his facade. there's another person on the shore with them but he pays no attention to them for now, remembering that he was told to fuck off when he offered his help.
it looks so far. impossibly far. she bows her head, tightens her arm around anu's body as the kingdra moves cleanly through the water. waves still buffet them, but they lessen the farther they move from the gyarados. and then the tips of her toes graze against sand. her first attempt to stand fails; anu ducks her snout under willow's arm, helps lessen the burden of the deadweight she carries. is she still alive?
anu helps as far as she can go and then willow's forced to sling the girl's arm around her shoulders and stumble towards shore. when water no longer licks at her boots, she falls to her knees, yanks off the coat around her waist. her hands feel like blocks of ice, but still she checks for a pulse on the body sprawled beside her. she presses harder when she can't find one, closes her eyes. then her hands are on her chest, pumping methodically as the world around her freezes. she doesn't notice.
arms shake from the cold and exhaustion and she almost crumples as relief sweeps through her when the girl spits up water. and then whiteness blinds her. she winces away from it, raises a hand weakly to cover her eyes, and by the time she opens them, the girl is gone. but that's impossible.
she hears lucas speak, looks up at him and then follows his gaze to the white light in the sky. but the pressing matter of where did she go? has her looking around. for now, they're safe. lucas doesn't seem put off by whatever's happening with the light. grey eyes rest on their third party member; she takes in the mop of curls, the slightly askew glasses, lenses still covered with water droplets.
then she checks lyune, sways to a stand when she realizes something's wrong. "lyune?" her throat is raw from the salt water. he gives no response. but she realizes then that he's not the only one stuck in a trance. she wraps her arms around herself, ducks her chin as a shiver lances through her. she needs to send alpha out, needs some form of heat to warm herself back up, but she doesn't know what will happen if she does.
"you okay?"
whitened fingers tighten and she nods tersely, looks past him back up at the light. "i'll be fine. what does it want?"

}
He's wet.
He's cold.
He's tired.
Three facts about him that he can list at the moment, three things that need to be fixed soon or he can feel his body's going to give out. He shivers pathetically and glances at the other two, no longer scowling. His face relaxes into what he assumes to be a hopeless expression. The light is blinding, but he simply bows his head. He doesn't really care anymore, not now that Calypso's vanished. She wasn't even a friend honestly, but he'd seen her vanish and now he was stuck with two people he didn't know, on some random island, feeling vaguely uncomfortable in his own skin. His binder pulls at his chest and he looks back out toward the water, ignoring the other two entirely. Not really on purpose if he's honest, but they seemed close and he felt awkward.
[break][break] Safety. Protection for loved ones. How honorable of an answer and yet also somehow entertaining. Silently the ball of light would remain in the sky as if contemplating this response. Nothing about strength nor riches was asked, yet neither was the protection of the pokemon that remained stagnant on the lake. People were more important and as each human attempted to warm themselves, it was easy to bear witness to what priorities each one held. There was no way to distinguish whether what was said was fact or fiction and with the pokemon in suspended animation the light sphere was left to its own devices. [break][break]
"then why are you here?"
[break][break] The ball of light would sketch these words into the air except this time it would not wait for a response. Splitting itself in two, the ethereal orbs would separate to encircle WILLOW and PARKER COMSTOCK momentarily. In unison the orbs would forcefully enter their two bodies and in that instant, the two would begin to feel rather feverish. Within seconds their internal temperatures would rise to unnatural levels and it would feel akin to being boiled alive. If nothing is done then who knows what would happen?
it's not long before she's given an answer. wary eyes drift back up towards the light. the pattern, no, words, that are traced into the air make her look down as she scrambles to find words, to find something meaningful to say. she rubs her arms in a useless attempt to stave off the cold. she reaches for lyune's ball, worry knotting in her stomach the longer he stays frozen in place. but before she can call him back, the blinding light draws closer.
she sticks out a hand, stumbles back when it nears. its rays touch her fingertips and she bites down hard against the blight. but her clumsy retreat doesn't stop it from darting forward and melting against her chest; thin veins of light crawl up the side of her neck and she knots her finger in her shirt. heat flares up against the cold; relief lasts a scant second and then there's nothing but boiling pain.
"lucas," she manages to gasp before her legs give out on her. her nails rake over the skin of her collarbone. she's not thinking straight. all she's thinking is that she can't take this, not this fire, not this burning, not like this, not like this. suddenly she's not there on that beach. she's in a room filled with smoke and ash and the sounds of her comrades, her sister, burning alive in front of her.

what does it want?
he's not exactly sure what it is but it's clear that it's unnatural, mystical even. it just floats there watching them. he does his best to keep an eye on it at all times even as he approaches avery. "i'm not sure." he responds. he's about to say more, explain his answer but he's stopped by movement from the ball of light. he shifts his attention to it and follows it up into the air as it traces the night sky with text. he grows more uncomfortable as he reads the text, one hand goes into his pocket to grab a pokeball but he freezes when he remembers what happened to the others.
then why are you here?
he has no time to even formulate a response. the ball of light splits into two, dividing itself before flying straight for avery and the other - he flinches, takes a step back. it only takes a moment but his gaze shifts away from the ball and down to avery, concern immediately spiking. "avery--" he takes steps towards her but he slows as he notices the unnatural lighting of her veins. lucas. his stomach drops when he hears his name further amplified by the sight of her falling to the floor. profanities boom in his head as he stumbles onto the floor next to her.
he grabs her by her shoulders, it takes seconds for him to recognize and register the heat that's resonating from inside of her. it's making it difficult for him to even touch her but he holds on. "fuck, fuck--" he's not sure what to do. he panics, looks around for anything to help. "anu!" he yells, hands struggle to keep their hold around her, each second causing more discomfort. he looks to the water to see the kingdra frozen, just like the rest. he looks back at her, his heart races as he shakes her. "look at me--avery--you're okay, you're safe." he knows his attempts mean nothing but he has to try. he's not going to lose her again.
"what do you want?!" he yells out in hopes that the ball of light would hear him. "hey, i'm here, i got you." he looks back to the water and decides that it's the safest option. he's struggling to buy time as he hears the pain intensify with every passing second. so he adjusts his grip around her and picks her up in his arms. "you're fine, i promise." his voice is shaky as he steps into the water and slowly lowers her into it.
he's not sure if this would even work or how she'd react but he had to try something, anything. he then remembers the question from before. he has no time to think of a response so he answers out of instinct, eyes glancing upwards in search of the ball of light. "i'm here for rocket!" with avery still in his arms he looks down at her, the cold not bothering him.
[break][break] So reliant on pokemon. The selfishness as words would be spoken as if to will actions one way or another. There was no guarantee for safety and the futile actions to pull Willow into the water would give a brief amount of shallow relief at the surface. It was not the surface that was the issue however. It was the core that fire would burn. At the same time it appeared none would care for Parker and thus gradually the man would fall victim not to the burning but the stasis that was time itself. Mimicking the appearance of the pokemon in the lake, there would be no movement - not even a breath - as the body sat there. Due to the rigidity it was obvious the man was not dead if one thought on it. [break][break] Lucas' screams would reach nothing, his demands unanswered as an eerie silence befell the fragmented space. His desperation was rewarded with little more than the sounds of Willow's breathing reaching his ears. Her condition was not getting any better however her condition was not getting any worse. It was not until the answer was brought forward that anything would change. [break][break]
Rocket.
[break][break] A strip of the lake began to shimmer brilliantly that contrasted the otherwise lifeless and dull atmosphere. There were no more words that were said - messages in the sky to read. Only that conspicuous bridge that now connected the small island cavern and the shoreline. Due to its nature the bridge would prove to be useful if they chose to continue down it back to the lakeside. It was almost as if whatever possessed this lake was telling them to leave. nothing happens. he's left stranded there in his own fears and concerns, each thought unpleasant as he keeps his focus on her. he doesn't even take notice of the other person on the beach with them, at this point in time it's just him and her, no one else. "you're fine, you're okay." he says whatever in futile attempts to make everything okay. it's foolish of him to do so, but he has to try something to keep his mind occupied.
calm down.
he repeats it to himself, wills his heart rate to slow down if even by a little. he controls his breathing, in, out, three second delay between each. he's done this before, feels like this before; distress, panic, guilt. he sinks into the water closer to her despite the heat. he hears something forming to the right of him, so he looks - a bridge. suddenly things don't look so bleak anymore, a shimmer of hope that takes the form of a bridge. an escape path.
or a trap.
"stay with me." he speaks under his breath as his gaze shifts between the bridge and the cave. he then remembers the question from before; what is it you desire most? safety. that was the answer he gave the thing and now safety awaits at the end of the bridge. he scoops his arms underneath her, one on her back and the other below her legs. he then lifts her off the ground and is left with a decision to make.
he looks left, then right, then left again. safety. it rings in his head. he takes a step to the right towards the bridge, but one step is all he takes. he's stubborn; he won't be denied this, not when they've risked so much already. plus there's no guarantee that they bridge won't just collapse. but he realizes that he's not only making this decision for himself, but for her too. so he doesn't move yet.
"hey," he leans in closer, raises an arm so that her head tilts upwards. he's hovering near her before gesturing towards the bridge. "do you want to go back?" he asks, unsure of how or even if she could respond.
there's soot in her mouth, smoke in her lungs. she's gasping and sputtering on it, trying to choke through it. waves of heat rake through her, hot needles, snowflake embers, curl at her arms as she reaches forward. astrid. leathery wings grace her skin and she's saying no, no, "no," bellied moans crawling up her throat as she tries to lurch past opal. alpha? water splashes her cheek from one of her shudders and she snaps hazy grey eyes open, hears, stay with me.
but lucas isn't there. he can't be there. he wasn't there to save her. she wasn't there to save him. he's gone. her fingers curl in his shirt now, against the back of his neck as she hunches in closer to him. he's cold as ice to her heated skin and it drags her back to the present, forces pressing memories to become flashing pictures, distorted sepia.
water drags at her, patters down, down, as he starts to trudge out from the lake. her head stays bowed as she tries to sort between fact and fiction, pressing fingers aching to know if she's only grasping at an apparition. his hands are cold, too, but she tilts her chin back, lips parted. it hurts, she wants to say. all of it hurts. the pain blistering in her muscles, the burning skeletons in her closet, the air between them an inferno, hotter with every inch of distance she's put between them.
she doesn't know what he's asking her, not until she sees the bridge. she shivers. nowhere is safe. she's learned that the hard way and so she looks past him, weakly points to their frozen pokemon. "w-we can't l-leave them. n-n-not again. not again, lucas." she curls in, fists together the fabric of her shirt. "i-i'm here to help," she murmurs. she's pleading to the light now, but closed lids envision the glow of her sister's face. bright smile, cherry cheeks. this is atonement. this is judgment. this is retribution. "i'm sorry. i'm sorry."

koma. anu. his stomach drops when he remembers, sees them frozen in place, helpless. he feels disconnected from them, from his new team that could never replace the old, the dead. for that reason he feels sad; koma, kojo, anu, they all deserve better, deserve a trainer who actually cares about them, who's not afraid. if this was his old team that was frozen he'd immediately rush back to ensure their safety. but it wasn't.
"no, stop. don't apologize." he starts to feel his legs weaken under the cold, through the trudging he has to do to get to shore. despite the warmth that resonates from her he feels himself shivering, every small breeze or gust only further amplifying the feeling. he exhales slowly as he tries to control his heart rate. he's tired, he's weak, but they're so close.
finally they make it back onto shore, every step sinking into the soft sand but he manages to reach the side of the cave before setting her down on the sand, leaning her back against the rocky wall. he's on his knees crouched next to her. he's a couple of steps away from the entrance and he fears the worse, his stomach turns just at the thought of what awaits inside. but for now avery has all of his attention as he tends to her.
"you've helped enough." he tugs at the hood of his jacket that's soaked along with everything else. he contemplates taking it off due to its weight but refrains, realizing that he needs to keep himself warm. he gently places a hand on her cheek. "hey, you're okay. you're safe with me." he forces a smile. he glances behind his shoulder to look at the frozen pokemon, teeth gritting from guilt. "they'll be okay," he whispers false assurances.
he lets his hand fall from her face onto her shoulder, the other one doing the same as he holds her. "i'll be right back," he whispers. it pains him to leave her in that state but he has to. he reluctantly gets back up onto his feet and takes a step away despite any objections she might have. "i won't be gone long, i promise." a promise he's not sure if he can keep. in one quick movement he turns away from her and approaches the entrance of the cave.
it's dark. he places a hand on the side of the cave as he peers in. "i'm here. you owe me something." he speaks into the darkness.
[break][break] The second that Lucas would peek into the cave, leaving Willow alone by the cavern who had been unable to fully function, a faint sound of a mindless whisper would echo. He had demanded something and the cavern would not be keen to comply. The cavern's darkened interior would remain this way, however one could faintly sense a powerful presence residing further in. Yet was that truly a wise decision? At one point it might have been. [break][break] It was too late now. [break][break] In a matter of seconds the lake would revert to how it was. The swarm of gyarados would regain their function as they began to flail wildly in the water once more. The partner pokemon of the duo would resume movement all the while Willow would continue to feel the pain intensify tenfold as her nerves grew increasingly sensitive to pain. A pulse of psychic energy would be expelled from the mouth of the cave to push the woman off into the lake helplessly. Being left alone in the water meant that she was in more danger than ever before. It was possible for the pokemon to assist the woman but the burning sensation would drain her of any energy to function. The shimmering bridge that was constructed would also vanish, leaving the duo stranded on the island cavern with the single possibility of escape being via flight. [break][break] Decide your actions. Investigate the cavern further or save your teammate

ears perk at the sound of whispers, faint but it seemingly echoes through the cave. he leans in closer, tries his best to isolate the whispers. to no avail his attention gets taken away by a mysterious force that ripples past him. he takes a step back and plants his back against the wall. he feels the force travel past him so his eyes follow. there's a sharp pain that jabs at his heart when he sees avery being thrown back into the water. "avery!" he yells. he jolts over to the water, eyes desperate in their search for her.
that's when he sees movement; the gyarados thrashing at the water, anu and koma regaining their ability to move, and lyune dashing right after her trainer. "find her," he whispers, voice full of worry. he leaves his team out of their pokeballs for now. it only takes a few moments but soon lyune reappears out from beneath with avery on top of him. it's clear that she's in no shape to continue, she can barely keep herself afloat without the help of lyune.
"koma. get her out of here, now."
koma quickly rises off the ground and flies forward, circling the air for moments as he tries to find a good opportunity. finally he sees one and he sweeps down, sharp claws sinking into her shoulders as he picks her up. his hold around her is strong and firm as he flies away from the chaos, high above the gyarados towards safety.
his eyes follow koma as the fire bird grows smaller, fades into the distance. his heart still pounds hard but it slows. he's glad she's safe, but not so glad that he's stranded here. he looks to anu then at the gyarados. he wonders how he's going to get out of here, if he's going to get out of here. he turns back to the cave and approaches it carefully.
he feels drawn to it, senses a strong presence resonating from inside. he can't see, but it doesn't matter. with a deep breath he takes one step forward, then another, letting himself sink into the darkness. he's not sure what's inside, he's afraid, he fears for his life, fears he'll never see her again.
but he persists; he's stubborn, he won't be denied this.
she loses her grasp on what's real. fingers dig into the sand on the beach as her fever crests and swells. she knows it's inside of her and she clutches at her chest, skin hot, burning, smoldering. grey eyes are clouded as she struggles to stay in some state of mind, but she can't do anything, can't utter a single word when lucas turns away from her. his words fall on deaf ears, can't be heard over the roar of her blood pounding through her veins.
she's thrown then; sand scratches at her face, stomach drops as she loses grasp of where she is. the water is a shock this time and she curls in on herself, gasps and swallows a mouthful of water. instinct tells her limbs to move, but the pain has her disconnected. she turns in the crashing waves created by the flailing gyarados, closes her eyes against the salt, the turning of light and darkness.
something comes up under her and she thinks it's the bottom, that if she looks up, the surface will be a million miles away. too far, too far. her lungs are collapsing and weight is pressing, blackness seeping and pressing, crowding thoughts of you have to move, you have to survive. and though her body still boils, for the first time in a while, she's cooled. vengeance (retribution?) cracks and chips away, drifts down to the sea floor as she rises and breaks the surface.
water trickles out of her mouth and her body expels the water before giving up on her. she's half-there, face contorting in pain when claws sink into her shoulder. fingers curl feebly against her pokemon's skin and she opens her eyes a crack to see him below her. "lyu..." but her jaw falls slack and she can't make her hands grasp his pokeball.
she wants to call up, tell lucas to turn back, that she can't leave lyune, but then her blood runs cold. she sees his back, his silhouette in the fog, disappear into the legendary pokemon's cave. a motley of emotions roar through her like a tidal wave, but she can't make sense of them. it's too much, too much, so she closes her eyes and she listens to the talonflame's steady wingbeats, feels fire coursing over her skin.
As Lucas would enter the cavern, descending deeper into its depths, the darkness would envelope his form and blind him. A shivering sense of foreboding would enter his body. Similarly as Willow was rescued from her fate from the depths of the lake, her senses would also fade. Nothing short of complete darkness would take over her vision as well. Unconsciousness would unify the two souls simultaneously as they drifted off... [break][break]
"It's over."
[break][break] They would both wake within the central chambers, together, with no recollection of how they had arrived. Their surroundings would remain bleak save for a single mass of crystal that glimmered sinisterly. If one looked upon its surface, one could view the reflection of themselves staring back at them. However these reflections were sentient, the first being the visage of Lucas Blackburn who would echo the words of the disembodied voice. [break][break]
"You have come but you have come alone. Your will to serve triumphed over your will to protect."
[break][break] The reflection would smirk as if knowingly. With a snap of the fingers, Willow's body would regain natural feeling and functionality. She would no longer feel the burning sensation, however the fatigue from the experience would remain. A laugh would whisper into the empty chasm that would sound as if Willow herself was laughing. The reflection of Willow would take its place next to the reflection of Lucas. It would be her turn to repeat the voice's words. [break][break]
"Her willpower alone is what allowed her to live."
[break][break] The both spoke now in tandem with one another. [break][break]
"Nothing will change. ------ s--d--m wi-- -o- f---."
[break][break] And the crystal would shatter - leaving no trace of the distortion. Outside the skies would clear as the Gyarados retreated into the lake. The two galactic members would be rescued by reinforcements that would leave as swiftly as they came. Lake Valor returned to its peaceful nature whether it be from the intervention of the four that investigated, none will ever know.
