major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
The city was no great sight to see. It was a smallish, odd sort of city. Perhaps the only place of interest was the gym, and of course the marshes. To Cerys, however, it was a very different place.
...Feels like home.
Her eyes swept over the familiar buildings, heart aching ever so slightly. Technically, it wasn't her home anymore, not since she had moved, but it was more familiar.
Homesickness was not a concept Cerys was familiar with, never having travelled anywhere much outside her home. And usually it was only for a day or two. She had only left the city for two weeks before impulsively dashing back for no reason at all. She had wanted to see her family.
But then... Did she?
Butterflies fluttered in her stomach, all the words she had wanted to say to her family dropped out of her brain. What if they didn't want to see her? It was a small, crowded space at home, and she wasn't sure how much they'd welcome someone else to feed. And that was why she had come to pastoria, to hide somewhere that seemed like home, if only for a while.
'Don't be stupid.' She said out loud to herself, unaware of the odd glances that she was receiving. 'You're their daughter.'
That didn't help at all. Angrily, she aimed a kick at a stone lying near her, missed, and kicked the road instead. She glared at the rock, then at her throbbing foot, and sighed.
Eight years since... It had been almost eight years since Matt had been home in Pastoria city. Since the death of his father and the departing of his mother, he hadn't set foot in the marsh city before today.
It's been so long...
His silver eyes glanced over the rooftops of homes, and buildings, feint memories began to come back to him, memories of the marsh, memories of his parents and baby sister... Where did those days go? Lost in the fade of heartbreak and betrayal.
Matt didn't dwell on his homesickness for Pastoria much, it was only one of several memories that he wished he could forget, but alas there was someone in the city that was always on his mind, a reminder of who he was and why he loved this city. The only issue would be seeing them again after eight years of detachment. Would they recognize him?
They wouldn't recognize me...
His mind was clouded with images of his childhood, the friends he had made, the Pokemon he had seen, the family that left him behind. He turned a corner, a scene all too familiar played before him; Two children coming along the path, a young girl who couldn't have been any older than six on the back of a boy who seemed to be at least ten. The children passed him, the girl resting on the boy's shoulder.
Cerys...
He continued on the path, "Maybe Nostalgia is just getting to me... They're probably long gone." he sighed, "I suppose I should go check-" Matt stopped in his tracks, a few yards away stood a young woman. She bared a striking resemblance to someone he once knew, but that wasn't too uncommon be it he did live in the city for quite a while.
"If you're looking for a rock Pokemon, you might want to try the marsh, you'll have better luck there than kicking every other rock on the road." he chuckled, approaching the stranger.
The words did not make the girl feel any better. She was already feeling foolish, and she didn't need a stranger to helpfully point that out...
The rest of that particular strand of thought fell away as she fully processed the words of the stranger.
That stranger's voice that sounded rather like someone she used to know.
With complete disregard to her sore foot and her sore pride, she whirled around, searching for the source of that particular voice. Was it who she thought it was. Surely it was. She had a bad memory, but not that bad.
Is that-
'Matt?' She asked, voice high pitched in disbelief. No, that was years ago. What were the chances? Her eyes had to be tricking her. But they weren't she knew that face-and that voice well.
'Matt!' She shrieks, more certain this time, and runs towards the man, almost hugging him, until she remembered where she was. Awkwardly, she composed herself, glancing around, hoping no one noticed that slightly embarrassing display.
All thoughts of being embarrassed quickly swept out of her head, however. She had never been so glad to see a familiar face. And it was Matt, of all people. She had seen him last, oh, it must have been ages ago...
Did he still recognise her?
Surely he did, after so many days spent together. Or if he hadn't, he would have recognised now.
It was eight years since they'd seen each other, before they moved from pastoria. And they hadn't much contact since. Not any, actually. They'd all but faded out of each other's lives. She'd almost forgotten afterwards, when she was trying to adapt to the fact that they weren't wealthy any more.
But she hadn't really.
She wanted to say such a lot of things, but a she could manage was a choked, 'I missed you.' as she stood before the man, feeling as if she was almost going to cry.
Matt's eyes broaden at the woman's voice, she sounded eerily similar to the person he had returned to Pastoria to see. But she was long gone... Wasn't she? It had been eight years, after all, there was no way she would have stayed in the Marshes.
He mumbled something under his breath before the stranger whirled around to acknowledge him, perhaps it wasn't the best idea to make light of someone else's misfortune after all...
No way...
"Wait a sec..." He narrowed his eyes, crimson eyebrows furrowing in disbelief, her ashen blonde hair, her visage like two pools of untouched Citrine, it had to be her... But how? How could she remember him of all people?
Matt watched on as she made her way towards him, his expression softened, though he made no effort to return the halted show of affection.
His mind raced his memory trying to piece together images of the girl he once knew and the one before him.
...
He fell silent for a few seconds, it had to be her, "Cerys." he quietly muttered with an assured nod.
"It really is you!" Matt cooed with delight, a wide toothy grin stretching his lips apart, "What no hug?" Unlike his long lost companion, he wasn't as bashful to show affection in public. With an extension of arms, and a hearty almost child-like laugh Matt would embrace the girl before him with no hesitation.
It would seem befitting for two estranged friends to hug, or at the very least have a handshake. If he remembered correctly she wasn't one to limit affection in public, though his memory still had her pinned for the same girl she was eight years ago.
His joy was short-lived, however, Matt recalled a few details about Cerys, but the most critical being the fact that she was heir to an industrial empire... Wasn't she? Wouldn't her father, having to keep p appearances, forbid his daughter from meeting someone like matt in public? If only he could confirm his superstitions.
It didn't matter to him, she was actually here! "It's been forever! Come on give me a hug!" he extended his arms, disregarding the passing eyes around them, Matt would save her any hesitation his arms immediately wrapping the girl into an embrace.
He wanted to babble on about how much he missed her, how his mother left for Hoenn, and how his dad had been slain, but he couldn't, he wouldn't ruin the moment with such tainted memories, "I missed you too." his voice was low, he had to choke out the words to avoid bursting into tears, emotion swept over him like a heavy breeze, "I'm sorry for being gone for so long."
Something in Cerys relaxed when her childhood friend gave her the hug that the girl had held back. Some unconscious part of her was worrying that the man had forgotten her, or worse, decided to stop being her friend. If it had been a few years ago, she wouldn't have hesitated, but now...
So much had changed...
She had no idea where Matt went after he left Pastoria, but she wasn't the girl she had been, eight years ago. Gramp's death, father's misfortune. A lump began to form in her throat. Everything had changed, but they weren't bad, not all of them, and she wasn't going to let a few memories spoil anything.
Giving a light, breathy laugh, Cerys moved in to return her friend's hug, all thoughts of homesickness swept from her mind. Pastoria was home.
'I thought you might have forgotten...' She trailed off, unwilling to finish that sentence, in case it sounded insulting, or distant, or emotionless. But he hadn't, did he? Still, so much had changed since eight years ago. It made sense, if Matt wasn't quite the plain old Matt he had been before.
It was good to meet someone that wasn't part of her group of rich friends from when she was young, nor of the distant group of acquaintances that she called friends after she moved away. There was no awkward emotions, at all. It was good to know that she'd have someone to depend on, fi she needed it. Of course, she was an adult now, and didn't need any help, but-
Memories of her childhood rushed through her mind, making those days seem very close.
'Not your fault.' She managed to get out as she took a few steps back, to see the man better. The tone of her voice was strangely calm, despite the flood of emotions that were rushing through her. 'I... Was away too.'
It was, really, a stroke of luck, that they managed to find each other, in their old home, too. She never expected this trip, nor did she have any idea where Matt was, after all those years. That wouldn't matter anymore, however. They had, in the end, found each other.
She realised, with a sudden pang, that the man wouldn't know what had happened. He could have, perhaps, since the story of the change of hands of her father's company wouldn't have gone without remark in the media. Unless, perhaps he didn't realise? She wasn't going to educate him on it, if he didn't ask, in any case. It was just going to be like to old times.
Matt's expression further relaxed, eyelids half lidding. Something about having Cerys around again had put him at ease. Though he was glad to see her, much had changed about her, she wasn't the tiny, bewildered girl who used to nag him to see his mom's Pokemon, or would play with him all day before getting tuckered out. She was a blossomed young woman.
A knot formed in the pit of his stomach, was he too quick to hug her? Maybe she was waiting for someone and he was distracting her. As a prominent member of an esteemed household she was probably out waiting on a potential client. "I'm not interrupting anything am I?"
His mind couldn't quite grip the fact that she had grown so well, and was fairly attractive despite her being like his second little sister. In the eight years, he was gone she probably had become a success, while he struggled with the law, and finding a place to live. His mother's absence and his father's death had shaken his world quite a bit since eight years ago.
He would release her from his grasp, chuckling at his antics, "No way I could forget you! You're like my sister after all!" he would admit that his memory was shaky, but things slowly but surely came back to him.
"If anything I thought you would forget me, I bet you've been way busy." he kicked up a cloud of sand, "As for me well... Things have been rough..." his voice was once again choked up... But he had to keep a smile on, he couldn't bring down her mood, "But hey enough about me, what about you? Are you out here to buy the city or something?" he joked.
It was a relief to see her again, but she seemed nervous, as was he. Matt couldn't have let a slip of his tongue ruin a reunion such as this one.
There was a brief silence from him, "So... Would you like to get a bite to eat?" he smiled, "I mean if you aren't too busy helping your dad with his company. But hey enough about that, I bet you've been having a ton of clients trying to get you to marry their kids or something ha."
A wobbly smile slowly grew as Cerys continued to listen. She wasn't sure whether to laugh or to cry. She didn't want to ruin the meeting, but they'd been apart of so long, and so much had changed since she was eleven that the words Matt was speaking almost seemed ridiculous now.
'Nothing like that.' She said, voice as wobbly as her smile. 'Nothing at all. I've plenty of time to wander around these days. Things... Changed.'
Her smile faded a little at those words, but she didn't continue. It was too serious a topic for this chance meeting with her old friend. He doesn't need to hear the sad story on how her dad lost the family's wealth.
'There, well, there has been changes since you left. I don't have that kind of wealth anymore.'
She hesitated, not willing to continue. That was exactly what she didn't want to speak about. Would it be too upsetting? She didn't want pity, not right now, or sound like she was whining. A lot had changed since eight years ago. She'd grown up, for one, and didn't need to sound like she was depending on anyone. She didn't want to be a child anymore, even as their meeting triggered memories of the times spent in her childhood playing with the boy that was now an adult. Like she was. She reminded herself silently. 'But I've plenty of time now, so I'd be more than happy to come.'
Her smile brightened once more, perhaps too much. It seemed almost fake. She didn't want their meeting to seem too awkward, not when it's so long since they've seen each other last. Hurriedly, she found something else, something safer, to talk about.
'But tell me, what have you be doing? I never expected to see you, you know. I don't come here often anymore, either. Did you move back?'
Matt gingerly grinned, as Cerys spoke, his grin breaking for a moment at the mention of her not being all that busy. That was peculiar, and his suspensions surely couldn't have been true, he refused to believe it. Perhaps it was blunt ignorance, but he had always seen her as a success, even when they were younger, she seemed to be calmer headed than he could ever be.
His eyebrows furrowed, she wasn't wealthy anymore? "I see," he nodded, arms crossed, "Well let's not dwell on it,"
She was hesitant speak, almost as if she had forgotten how to speak altogether, he began to grow concerned as she stood before him frozen. It wasn't like her to be so still, but again, it had been eight years since they had last spoken. She had grown, and was certainly cautious with her words, but he could lighten her up, or at least Matt hoped he could.
'Nice, we can hit up the old cafe. If it's still here of course, ha I can finally buy a sandwich instead of swiping one." his memory had weeded out minor memory, there was diner somewhere in their neck of the woods...
His cheery expression faded when she asked him how he had been. Does he tell her about Galactic? His father's death? Him being a criminal? It was only right he did so, though his tale could stir disappointment in his childhood friend. "Well, I got wrapped up in a tiny bit of trouble, but It's all smoothened now. And sort of, I'm looking for a place to stay, so I figured I would move back home.. What about you?"
The girl gave a brighter grin, this time more cheery, as the topic shifted away from the more tender subjects, and onto light-hearted everyday talk. At least, it was what it seemed like.
'It ought to be, or there'd be some other place around.'
She wasn't very familiar with the city anymore, since the years when she hadn't been here. It still felt familiar, but many old buildings and establishments were gone, leaving new, unfamiliar signs in their old place. Change happened everywhere, and after six or seven years, she didn't really expect the old places to still be around. Most were, however, and that did cheer the girl up. She couldn't say it was quite what she'd imagined, though it was pretty close.
Cerys chose to ignore the rest of the sentence, as odd as it seemed. Anyway, the man's next sentence sort of explained the previous, and as the saying went, the end justified the means. She was too happy to allow something so small get between them.
How was she going to answer the man's question, though? One could hardly say, 'oh, you know, my grandfather died, my father lost his company and his fortune, and we're practically broke now, so everything's just great' to an old friend. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
What could she say, anyway?
'There's nothing much worth speaking about.' She said, her voice falsely bright. 'My dad's got a new job, and we moved away. I'm just travelling around now, y'know. My mother wanted me to become a Pokemon trainer, and all.' She shrugged, trying very hard to look as if she was telling the truth. It was true, sort of, considering that she'd omitted several facts, which wasn't really the same as lying.
He stretched his arms and licked his lips, "Man I am famished," he sighed, looking up at the oaky rooftops of the homes around them, "Hey you think my old house is still here? Eight years wasn't that long was it? The house could of course been demolished... Matt was hopeful it was still around, heck he could probably buy it for himself.
Matt would gasp every now and then with every place they passed, memories flowing back to him one by one, "Hey! There's where that Skourpi chased me home from school! And over there is where I met Tabitha! Oh and check that out!" he pointed to an abandoned house, "This is where me and the guys used to practice battling!"
He tuned into her words once more, after going on his little nostalgia trip, "Oh... Well hey we're both finally trainers!" he placed a hand on her shoulder, "Though I'm happy things are okay for you... My dad uh, died on the line of duty... He was still a detective... And as for mom well she went to Hoenn with my little sister, haven't seen them in years."
She wasn't entirely sure what to say to the man beside her. As much as she missed him, she wasn't sure what to say in reply of his incessant chatter. She hadn't been around either, and every time he pointed out the old places, she felt a pang of something very similar to grief pass through her.
All the memories...
Instead, she manufactured another smile, leaving it on her face as she nodded every now and then, whether she agreed or not. She couldn't let the brief bout of sadness overwhelm her, and ruin the meeting. She wasn't a child anymore, she couldn't act like one for any longer.
And then, finally, she heard Matt's story, after he left pastoria. It made her past seem, well, normal.
'I'm sorry.' She whispered, though she wasn't sure what she was sorry for. It seemed like the only sensible thing to say to her friend, to try and comfort him. 'Were you okay afterwards?'
She was looking down at the ground, eyes stinging as she tried to hold back the tears. It wasn't fair. Life wasn't fair, to push so much sorrow in her path, and Matt's. Perhaps she wasn't being sensible. Matt certainly didn't seem all that saddened. Perhaps he'd accepted it. Or learned to bear it.
Matt would soon guide her down a different path... If he wasn't mistaken the little cafe he loved so would be just around the corner, but upon arrival. he would find that it was gone... Instead, it was replaced with some sort of cheap shabby bar. "Hm, I guess things did change a bit after I goofed off." he laughed, looking back at teh girl, "But wow Cerys you look beautiful today, you got a little boyfriend now?"
He was teasing her mostly, though at the back of his mind he was griefed by the thought... She and some other guy getting close and all mushy... Bah! He hated the idea, but she wasn't the little girl who used to follow him around Pastoria anymore, so he couldn't be too salty if she did. "I mean if you do that's your business..." he mumbled looking up at the sky.
Hey if she was single however... No it wouldn't work, she was like his sister... And with his real sister gone, he couldn't lose another.
