major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
the forensics lab was, as usual, utterly detatched from the rest of the to and fro of the bubbling ranger headquarters. whereas the rest of the building consisted of thousands of people storming left and right with important tasks and projects and was busy every second of every day, the forensic lab had its moments..and sometimes, it was just a bunch of people in labcoats bickering over dead bodies.
none of them really noticed the presence at the door way, and they were all more or less talking about something or the other. ana, recently made a full time worker, was sitting in her own chair, scrutinizing the blood report. one of the other forensics called from the other end of the lab, referring to another case, and the lab descended into bickering again, although this time it was a bit more productive. there was a stuffy air of competitive camaraderie, as there was with the rest of the ranger base.
"what a boring way to die," ana said offhandedly, her mind more immersed in the report she was doing than the case of her colleague on the other side. she flipped through the pictures of the body easily and without flinching, and she was clearly used to it given her blase way of approaching the matter. it probably didn't give her the right to degrade someone's manner of death, but propriety wasn't exactly the norm where ana was concerned. she filed her own results into a simple folder, and that was when she noticed the man across from her desk over the threshold at the door, and she blinked.
"you are?" she asked, but then she stopped herself.
"right, right. probably iverson's new cadet. swear to god that one takes and drops subordinates like they're dirty lingerie." she flashed the stranger a condescending smile. "you're the newest victim?" she asked as she stacked the filed evenly and then patted them upright against the desk, preparing to file them to give it to him.

"i am deeply sorry for your loss." the phrase leaks out of his mouth that remains stoical. he's familiar with death, seen enough to realize there's no escaping it. "should you ever need anything..." he scribbles down digits onto his notepad and tears away at the page. "don't hesitate to call. i can be reached at all times." it's unconventional but he understands that people need support in dire times, especially if their son had just passed due to a heart attack. with a nod of the head he turns and exits the apartment.
it's a shame; young male, athletic, healthy, but still prone to a heart attack. he supposes it's one of the more peaceful ways to go. he knows there's nothing more to the case, no evidence of foul play involved, but procedures needed to be followed. it has only been a week since he's been out of the academy but due to his extensive background he's been allowed to work a case on his own. the change of pace is nice, this is much more peaceful, much safer than out there at sea.
but he misses it.
he walks through headquarters with ease, finding it easy to navigate the otherwise large building. he enters the elevator, holds it open for people before pressing the appropriate floor. he tugs at his jacket, the one assigned to all rangers. he doesn't care for it, but he does his best to look as neat as possible. the metal doors of the elevator soon open which prompts him forward. he walks, lets eyes wander left and right before stopping at the forensics lab.
knock knock. he stands patiently at the doorway. he's here for the toxicology report, wants to know if there's anything suspicious in the man's system that may have caused the heart attack. the whole exchange should not have taken long, but no one's attended to him yet. he remains standing, unwilling to knock another time just yet as he listens to their conversation.
'what a boring way to die'. while it might have been true, the way she said it just made it sound so degrading. he keeps it at the back of his mind for now. when he raises his hand to knock again he's stopped by a voice. "cade--" he's cut off. the impassive tone in her voice, the condescending smile. it should not have mattered but he's starting to feel annoyance build up.
so he chooses to ignore her comments. he simply walks forward, stops by her desk before speaking. "has the toxicology report been completed?" he asks, keeping it as formal as possible. but something knocks away at the back of his mind, just begging for him to let it out. so he does. "what's boring about a heart attack? apologies. i'm just curious as to what makes a death interesting for you." the way he voices it makes it sound like he's neutral about it, like he's impassive. it doesn't show on his face which remains blank except for the slightly furrowed eyebrows.
the new boy hardly seemed conversational, but nevertheless he made his way down to her desk and asked for the report, to which she just nodded blandly. "hmm," she responds, non-committal about the whole thing because everything necessary is already down there in the files, and ana doesn't see the point in discussing the fantastic methods of retrieving different results and how different relayed outcomes can mean different possible things. she's known the worst of being looked at funny, so she's evolved to not bother initiating the process.
she raises an eyebrow at his question, taking in the subtle emphasis on the word you, the sudden blurt with which he speaks as though he can't hold it back or not say it. the neutral, impassive tone marked too distinctly by its suddenness. it's a subtle challenge, something about ethics, morals, feelings. and it takes one second for ana to forget about what she just learned and instead take his words at face value: what is interesting about death?
"are you really asking a forensics that question? the mystery, of course." it's practically inhumane to say this, but his question was one that begged such an answer.
right?
ana knew enough about what she was asked to do, but human feeling had little to do with her subject of interest. and so she sat with her elbows on either arm of her chair, chin tilted slightly as she metaphorically rose to the challenge the cadet possessed. in the back of her mind, she knew she was making the cadet dislike her. but it wasn't about flaunting her superiority or being annoying.
no, it was just the excitement of what could happen next.

he's reaching for something that he knows isn't even there. he's not sure why he's so fixated on this particular forensics analyst; maybe it's the way she speaks, the tone, or maybe it's something entirely different that he can't pin. regardless he should have let it go, should have just taken the file and move on. but he answer intrigues him, reels him in like a prized capture. he sees a file on the desk that he assumes is the report. "may i?" he asks out of habit but he reaches for it anyways. it doesn't take him long before he's engulfed in it.
"right. the mystery." he comments offhandedly as he flicks through the file. there's nothing odd about the file, nothing that might suggest foul play except for one small detail; an unusual amount of pain drug in his system. he remembers seeing the medicine in the apartment. there's no way there should have been any of it left in his system during the time of the toxicology. which only suggests one thing.
he turns the file around and places it directly in front of her. "what do you see?" he asks. he wants to test her knowledge, to know if she's actually as good as she thinks she is. he crosses his arms and waits. "do you need a hint?"
