major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]it's been a busy few weeks for the ranger, between the training and the missions he hardly found time to slack off. it's a total one-eighty, to jump from someone who did about two missions a month to now about ten. he's still not too sure what triggered him, it could have been so many things; the endless shit people gave him, the constant harassment from the media, the eye-rolling other rangers do when they see him. this isn't to say that he's a completely different person, no, he still slacks off on the job, he just knows when it'd be appropriate.[break][break]
though not everything's changed; he still dresses the same, sloppily, still picks fights with everyone, still retains his cocky personality. and he's still late, just a little less than before. five minutes this time around as he approaches the commissioner's office. he's pleased with athena's choice, adrian is still his favorite pick out of the options from before. for all the shit she gives him he knows she's doing her best as commissioner and as a ranger to help him improve.[break][break]
which he has, honestly, and maybe that's the reason why he's here standing outside her office. he reads the name tag on the door, 'adrian mastry, commissioner'. he rolls his eyes, finding it amusing that someone he'd attempt to flirt on not too long ago is now commissioner and furthermore, his boss. but he doesn't think of it that way. he'll show respect if the situation calls for it but other than that she's still the same person, a fellow ranger that won't stop giving him shit.[break][break]
he reaches for the handle before stopping himself, reminding himself to knock first. which he does, twice, very sloppily and quick before bursting through the door. "hey," he greets, closes the door behind him. there are two chairs in front of her desk which prompts him forward. he takes a seat in one, not even waiting for an invitation. he hastily runs a hand through his hair as he slumps into the chair.[break][break]

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Times had changed, or perhaps not so much. Days had passed since that fateful day that Rory had so boldly challenged Adrian for the right to buy her drinks in the middle of the lobby. It was not something that the redhead would easily forget, the memory of it still causing her to roll her eyes as she found herself shuffling through the masses of paperwork on her desk. After the entire ordeal with the commissioner title, the ginger found herself in the same position as that day - going through files, losing time off, and dealing with people she didn't want to - except now she had a fancy desk with a nameplate outside a new office.
With a heavy sigh, Adrian threw the files she had been reading up on across the sleek mahogany desk. Ever since her promotion her focus had shifted from actively working to telling people what to do. None of it was truly her style, however she conceded to her fate as she took the time reading the full evaluations of every significant event and persons that the rangers had on file. If one name stuck out consistently then Rory's would be at the top of that list. At first she thought they would all be negative reports or complaints from civilians considering the last time she saw him in action, it left much to be desired. What she read though was consistently positive. Completed missions came in left and right, which in turn gave her more work, but they were all filled with results.
Shocking.
Which is why the new commissioner had called Rory into her office today. The expectation was that he would come in late, considering her opinion of him personally had yet to change, and he fulfilled that expectation with ease. With that in mind, when the raps at her door came a few minutes later, she anticipated it to be another ranger asking her something. When Rory was the one that appeared at her doorway she rose a curious brow. He actually knocked and greeted her? "Hey," she'd reply casually as if this was some social visit. Adrian makes note of how he was dressed as he closed the door behind him and watched him sit down without her prompting to. Those things the woman hardly cared about as she herself had acted similarly before, not that she'd admit that.
Part of her expected that he'd try his same old shenanigans on her. Asking her out for drinks or something like that. Instead he'd go straight to the point and set the tone for this meeting with a few simple words. "I could ask you the same thing." Leaning back in her leather office chair, she'd make eye contact with the man in front of her. Strangely with the mention of her actual name did the woman appear to keep her tone even and casual. She was getting so used to everyone in headquarters addressing her as commissioner now she was starting to forget her actual name.
Reaching over to a stack of folders, she grabbed a chunk of them and lazily tossed them in front of Rory to bring his attention to them. He could look through them if he wanted, but they would all be papers about him from before she was commissioner till now. If he hadn't moved to look at them then it didn't matter. "What's gotten into you? I'm receiving good reports about you." She paused as she realized how that could be taken incorrectly seeing as how she called him into her office. "This isn't a complaint, just curious."
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]he finds it somewhat strange to be sitting opposite the commissioner, a position respected by many, and yet the mood in the room is so casual. he's not complaining, he prefers adrian to athena anyways, mostly because he doesn't have to act professional around her. "am i in trouble again?" he chuckles. he watches her toss a bunch of folders onto the table in front of him. his eyes stare at it for a moment as curiosity and fear battle each other in his head. if he is in trouble this would be his third and final strike. so he tenses up for a brief moment.[break][break]
he reaches for one of the files and flicks it open to skim through. he's getting more and more confused as he reads; these were all reports on him, but they're...good. "you fuck--i thought i was in trouble." he laughs, feeling relieved as he leans back once more. he crosses his leg, letting his ankle rest on a knee as he places the file on his lap. "what's gotten into me?" he repeats, finding it amusing that he's being talked to like he's in trouble. he could only shrug his shoulders as a response.[break][break]
"you sound so surprised." he reaches for another file and opens it. it's nice to finally be reading good comments rather than the usual nasty ones. it even brings a small genuine smile to his face but he hides it well by tilting his head downwards. he even brings up the file a bit higher to his face but eventually her voice would regain his attention.[break][break]
"thought i'd make the media really confused. it's been a while since i've seen a story on me." he's definitely not complaining, it's nice to finally have some peace. but a part of him isn't going to deny that having his success shown would be very nice, but hey, he can't have everything. he closes both files and places them back on the pile.[break][break]

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
The ginger would watch as the man began looking through the files. The more he looked through the easier it was for the woman to read his reaction based on his expression. He appeared surprised himself and his retort somewhat amused the easily agitated woman. He did not particularly answer her question instead of repeating it back to her like she was the one that was in the wrong here. As much as he tried to hide it, Adrian noticed a glimmer of a smile as he continued reading and wondered if he was actually feeling proud of himself. The thought that perhaps he was changing passed through her mind as she scoffed at his words. "I'll admit that I am surprised. I expected the opposite after they promoted me," she comment offhandedly. Part of her promotion was due to Rory's recommendation as strange as she thought that was considering his reputation She figured he would try to use that as leverage to goof off on the job instead of actually accomplishing anything.
The answer he gave did not give her much confidence that he truly had changed even with the evidence point to otherwise. She'd roll her eyes, shaking her head disappointingly as he mentioned proving himself. "You're still on that?" After that failed mission she thought that Rory would have dropped the subject. Sure he was accomplishing things but did he really expect her to go out for drinks with him? Or maybe she was reading too much into it and just wanted her acknowledgement. That'd be the day.
"Speaking of, remember that mission we went on together? You know, the one where we ran into Arkwright and you didn't have your badge?" Because she didn't forget it. The day that she had turned in her mission report to Athena, the commissioner at the time, had told her that Rory was on suspension and oh the embarrassment she felt that day. It should have been considered a miracle that Adrian got this position with that on her record. Nevertheless her serious face came back into play as she extended her right hand out, palm facing upwards. "Lemme see your badge."
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]"good to know your expectations are so high," he chuckles. he doesn't blame her, his faith would have been shaken too if he had to deal with someone like himself. he both likes and dislikes the 'new' him; likes the praise and the change of opinion in people, but dislikes the lack of free time he has. it's not that he works late or anything but by the time he gets home he's too tired to even try anything. in a way it's sad because he's sure this is the life most other rangers live, boring.[break][break]
he shrugs his shoulders at her question, letting his eyes drift off to the side of her office to observe his surroundings. "a deal's a deal." he murmurs as he shifts from left to right. her office is nice but he expects nothing less for the commissioner. it's exciting to think that one day this might be his office. it's a long shot that's very far off but it's still nice to think about.[break][break]
"i remember."the one arkwright cockblocked me. he thinks it but keeps his mouth shut, the thought makes him chuckle to himself. when asked for his badge he raises an eyebrow, a bit worried. "why?" he asks but he still reaches for it; first to his belt, and when it's not there he'd find it in his pocket. he doesn't bother leaning forward so he tosses it to her instead, expecting her to catch it with ease.[break][break]
"i better get that back, adrian. i need it." he disgusts even himself when he says that; rory mclain, actually wanting to do work. oh how he's changed. "or actually, you can keep it if you want. not having one hasn't stopped me from doing work before." he smirks.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
Part of her expected the man to show remorse after she brought up that mission. Or some annoyance after what had happened. Instead he chuckled which caused her to raise a brow briefly. He certainly was still full of himself, that was for sure. Regardless, Adrian would take mental note of his sudden caution when she asked for his badge. He'd comply to her demands as she expected, though his initial struggle to find it had her somewhat concerned for a moment that what she was about to do was the wrong decision. The badge would surface though and be tossed rather than placed in her hand. Effortlessly snatching the badge out of midair, she would look it over nonchalantly.
What Rory said next had her shift her attention over to him momentarily. He truly was full of surprises today. That he was actually defensive of his badge made her wonder if he was actually eager to continue working. The ginger would place the badge down on her desk as she looked over the ranger across from her. His last quip was aimed at her and the woman could only roll her eyes at the comment. "At least you're trying to do work now," she retorted as she moved her hand off the badge and towards one of the drawers at the desk, keeping the badge out of Rory's reach unless he lurched forward to take it back. Adrian would pull out the drawer slightly and rummage through it as she decided to ask a question. "What do you think about being a ranger? You're doing more work so be honest."
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]he watches her closely, following her hand that held the badge. he's oddly protective of it now and he's not too sure why. he keeps his eye on it even when it gets placed down on the desk. it's tempting to just reach for it, but from experience he knows that whatever this is, it isn't a suspension. besides, he had no reason to be suspended, he's done more in this past few weeks than he has in his entire career. probably not, but it sure feels like it.[break][break]
"does that surprise you?" he asks. when she asks a question of her own he stops for a moment to think. he's normally quick with retorts and replies but for this one he has to stop and think about it. he wants to give a serious answer and he's not so sure why he's suddenly compelled to. maybe it's because there's an opportunity for a promotion. he's not an idiot, and he knows his hard work needs to be rewarded somehow, so a promotion is only logical.[break][break]
"i like it. it gets tedious with the simple ass missions you assign to me but it's alright, it's for the greater good i suppose." he knows it's not her who gives him missions in particular, but everything can be traced back to the commissioner. "i think it's time you took me more seriously and start giving me real missions." and with that he'd offer her a smile before crossing his arms.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
His answer did in fact intrigue the woman. Her eyes would scour his expression for any signs disconnect. He was being blunt however she was fine with that for the most part. There remained some reservation from herself about him continuing this trend, yet he had been doing a good job so far... as worrisome as it might be. Normally this would not be a decision that could be made lightly but in Adrian's mind there were far worse candidates that were already in higher positions than she saw fit anyway. Thus with a shrug, she'd speak. "Good enough."
She'd pull out a different badge from the drawer and toss it forward casually, similarly expecting him to catch it with relative ease. If he didn't then it was not exactly her problem. "Congrats. Welcome to the big leagues where I'll be giving you more challenging work for slightly more pay." Again, honesty. It was not that long ago that she was in the same position as an Elite so she knew how much work she did and how much she was paid. The title was nice supposedly and he did ask for it. Finally she'd lean close the drawer and lean forward, placing her elbows on the desk while holding a single index finger up. "And one drink. That's it."
The fact was that he was right. A deal was a deal. While they did not fully succeed in the mission that day, they were able to pull some information and get a lead. Since then the files stacked on her desk was proof he was improving. He had yet to fully prove himself to her but he did prove himself competent nonetheless. So she was keeping her word as much as it disgusted her to do so. A single drink was not going to kill her and with her tolerance level she did not expect much to come of it. Before that though they had to finish up this little meeting and Adrian saw fit to do it with a warning. She was already pushing things with this decision and she didn't need more trouble with her job as it was. "Don't fuck up. I'm giving you a chance and I will demote you if you start doing stupid shit again."
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]congrats. with confused eyes he looks up at the commissioner. he hears the drawer slide open and the next thing he sees is a badge that's tossed at him. he catches it with ease and stares at it. confusion turns into surprise which then turns into elation. it shows with the smile on his face - it's genuine. he tries his best to muster it, head tilts downwards again as he stares at the badge. he runs a finger over the metal, then below that at the 'elite' text. among a wide variety of other feelings the most prominent one is triumph.[break][break]
"i don't care about the pay," he comments truthfully. he isn't in this for the money, he has more than enough. his original reason for joining was to escape the media in hoenn and also to help him get through a day. it got truly boring back in hoenn and he's glad he moved. but now his reasons, if asked, are much different; to redeem himself, to help the rangers. it's funny how his ideals and thoughts have changed so drastically in such a short period of time. he can't exactly pinpoint a cause.[break][break]
one drink. it's enough to take his attention away from the badge. he raise an eyebrow, shifts in his seat so he leans forward. "you serious?" he chuckles. oh he's going to enjoy this so much. he doesn't even listen to what she has to say after that, her last sentence totally blanking in his head. "if you were looking for a reason to say yes you could have just said so, no need to promote me." another chuckle, this time more playful as his smile turns into a grin. he's pushing his limits, he realizes. [break][break]
"okay, sorry." a quick apology as he calms himself down, leans back in his chair before speaking again. "when are you taking me out?" another smirk.

IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY BUT YOU NEVER GET IT RIGHT
The display of joy was sweet. When she was promoted to Elite she could not recall if the same feeling infected her. Unable to share in the excitement of Rory's promotion, the ginger would shake her head. The declaration about his lack of interest in the change of pay was the thing that stuck with her. "Aren't you special?" she'd say sarcastically as she was reminded of her own paycheck. It was not as if she was dirt poor but she certainly did not feel as if she got paid enough for her trouble. Heavens forbid she actually get injured. Adrian shouldn't have complained that Rory didn't mind whatever pay he was offered and ended up having to shrug off her annoyance.
But she wouldn't be able to shrug it off fast enough. His chuckle followed by his smart comment would not help his case in the slightest as the woman would cock a brow at his presumptuous attitude. The thought of taking back the promotion crossed her mind. If not for his apology, signalling that he caught on to his own mistake, she actually might have. Instead the woman would lower her face into the palm of her right hand and sigh heavily. Why did she have to make that stupid ultimatum and then become commissioner? That was the recipe for disaster.
His question would bring her back from her disappointment from sheer exasperation, lifting up her head to make eye contact with the ranger in front of her. "Don't get cocky. Remember, you're paying rich boy." The fact he did not respond to her last statement about not fucking up hardly affected her. If he didn't listen and ended up fucking up then it was no skin off her back if she had to demote him. Eager to get him out of her office, she would take a glance around her desk in case there was a mission she could shove off into his face and get him out faster. Once this failed to happen she leaned back into the comfort of her chair, replying to his earlier question with heavy reluctance. "Come by sometime after work. We'll go to whatever bar or something I guess. I don't know. Go pick something."
Dreading the hours that were to come, the ginger shifted her gaze to the clock hanging on the wall. Might as well get this over with the same day. Somehow some realization struck the woman after that, the original context of this request hitting her like a brick. "And this isn't a date."
Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound
[attr="class","mtnsndb"]he pockets the badge when everything's been said. he gives her a resounding nod before sliding off his seat, standing back up only to pause to look at her. an eyebrow perks at her comment, the same grin taking its usual form, smug on his face. "sure. it's not a date." he gives her a wink before carefully stepping backwards. he turns on his heels and in a few seconds he's out the door. when the door clicks and he's certain he wouldn't get called back in, he takes a moment to catch his breath.[break][break]
it's exhilarating; to finally be recognized, appreciated for his work. it's such a polar opposite to the rory that fucked around not too long ago. a hand reaches for the pocketed badge, holding it low as head tilts downwards. he smiles, runs a thumb over it to trace the details; the insignia, the lining, his name. elite. he's proud.[break][break]
a few hours later when the sun sets he's there; he loses the ranger jacket and replaces it with a plain grey one, there's no hood that accompanies it. he changes shirts, donning a simple white one underneath the jacket. he keeps the rest, even the shoes. the normal uniform looks decent enough to pass as casual wear, and this isn't exactly an event he needed to dress up for.[break][break]
it isn't even a date.[break][break]
she's made that abundantly clear. but it's not like he wanted one, he just likes the idea of one. a hand raises to run through his hair, hastily fixing it before knocking thrice on the door. he doesn't wait for an answer, instead he opens it and walks in.[break][break]

His wink at her would haunt her in nightmares, a frown settling on her face as she glared at the blonde easing his way out of her office. Clenching her teeth together in an effort not to chew out the newly promoted ranger, it would last just long enough for Rory to make his way out and the door to shut behind him. Then a groan would surface as she raked a hand through her amber hair, breaking any sense of order that might have been there. "I'm going to strange him," she murmured to herself begrudgingly. An idle threat, however it was not as if she could break her word and so the ginger tried to forget about it for now. Leaning back into her chair, she picked up another stay file laying on the side and glanced through its contents. If anything she'd at least try to get as much done as she could.
---
As evening approached Adrian would have hardly made much of a dent in her workload. At least that what it would have felt like to the ginger as she stamped her last page for the day. Her eyes would make subtle glances at the clock hanging above the doorway to her office, watching the hands of time move ever forward. Normally the approach of the end of her work hours would have had her greatly relieved, however with the obligation she had tonight it was difficult for her to feel anything but dread. Closing the file folder, the knocking at her door would beckon her attention over, knowing full well who it could have possibly been at this hour. Without even opening her mouth to say anything, the door would swing open as the upstart ranger would enter. His abrupt question would contribute to her long sigh, "Let's just get this over with."
Standing from her seat, the entirety of Adrian's ranger uniform would be seen. According to a few sources she could have chosen to wear a business suit or something due to her position however, as such things were never her style, the ginger stuck to wearing the modified ranger uniform. She'd strip off the iconic ranger jacket off her shoulders as she walked away from her desk and hang it on the coat rack nearby, revealing a modest button up shirt underneath. It wasn't in the most pristine condition, wrinkles decorating parts of the shirt in somewhat discrete places. Honestly it mattered fairly little to her as she raised her arms upwards to stretch a bit. "So where to hotshot?"
