A peculiar-looking pokemon caught Oliver’s eye, the man’s attention grabbed by the walking rock with a giant nose. A fond smile pulled at his lips for a moment, as he considered what sort of silly nickname his daughter would have given it. He proudly kept the names of his two current pokemon, Mr. Bubbles and Sparkles from when she had named them as a small girl. The ex-detective didn’t give a damn if it seemed strange, for a full grown man to have pokemon with such names. They brought back fond memories. Snapping himself out of his memories and back to reality, he brought out Sparkles to fight against the Nosepass. The bird was a bit cramped here inside the cave, but it wasn’t impossible to fight with how large the cavern was. It had been far too long since his last battle with his pokemon, so he was glad no one else was around to see how rusty he was.

With a quick glance at the reference sheet he made for himself on pokemon types, he nodded to himself as he confirmed that steel was, indeed, super effective against rock. “Sparkles, knock him down with steel wing,” Oliver commanded first, and the Skarmory didn’t hesitate to oblige. His wings glistened before he charged forwards on foot and slashed at the rock type, having no room to fly in here. Nosepass responded with going to sleep, using rest and healing back up to full immediately. The blonde took advantage of this by having Sparkles use another steel wing and then followed it up with an air slash, which wasn’t very effective but did its job of doing just a little more damage to make the pokemon fall unconscious.

The Nosepass woke up, then, right before Oliver chucked a pokeball at it to try and catch the wild Nosepass to add to his team.

If his daughter was still a little girl, Oliver would have likely caught that Spinda for her without even thinking about it. But as much as he hated to admit it, she was fully grown now and knew more what sorts of pokemon she liked than he did now. With a fond smile he watched the ditzy Spinda for a moment, before moving on. Still the blonde was careful to remain close to the cave entrance, and he returned Sparkles to his pokeball so the Skarmory wouldn’t have to continue struggling to move within the cavern. Sure there was room, but it was easier for both of them if the large bird was in his pokeball. Again he kept his eyes peeled for more pokemon, figuring he’d probably head back after this next one since he didn’t want to be stuck out on the mountainside after the sun went down.

While the Zongoose wasn’t as high in defense as his the pokemon he usually favored, Oliver still made a quick decision to catch it. He didn’t want to be too dedicated towards just defense- in case he needed a heavy hitter, he wanted to have one. This time he brought Mr. Bubbles out to battle, figuring the much smaller pokemon would have an easier time in here. Not to mention normal type moves typically didn’t do as much damage to rock types, he figured the Shuckle would have an easier time.

With a simple command to keep using stone edge since it was the only attack Mr. Bubbles knew, Oliver watched the battle unfold carefully. The Zangoose was faster than his Shuckle, so a slash hit the turtle before the first stone edge. He was a little surprised when the next stone edge hit first, only to frown when a revenge attack got boosted and did some extra damage. Not that it bothered Mr. Bubbles much, with how much defense he had. A swords dance was used next, and Shuckle hit off one more stone edge before Oliver finally called for his pokemon to stop. Taking out a pokeball, he tossed it at the Zangoose. Regardless of whether or not he was successful, he’d withdraw Mr. Bubbles and leave the mountain, wanting to get to the bottom before dusk.
