major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
welcome to the first ever battle cup tournament! set up along the beaches of sandgem are multiple areas that have been turned into small battlefields; sandy terrain with patches of water spread across to support water types. the battlefield stretches no longer than 50 meters. the first round has ended, trainers have had their pokemon healed up and ready to go again. with fewer trainers now crowds have started to pick their favorites as they cheered them onto the battlefield. two trainers stand at the end of each side of the battlefield, and soon enough, an umpire would gain your attention.[break][break]

Truthfully, Dakota hadn’t expected to make it past the first round. He was excited, not having participated in an event like this in years. It was a beautiful day on the beach, and he couldn’t wipe the wide grin off his lips for the life of him at the moment. As he reached his designated battle arena, he waved happily at the gathered crowd. He showed up a few minutes early, with how excited he was to keep going. Hell, he hardly even cared if he lost, the thrill of the battles enough for him.
“Good luck,” he called out to his opponent, just as he had with his first battle as a wide grin pulled at his lips. To start, he didn’t hesitate to throw out his pokeball for Knuckles, the Treecko popping out looking pumped for the battle ahead. “Kick us off with leech seed, and then agility,” Dakota called out, the excitement obvious in his tone. While the journalist knew he was here for work, he planned on having his fun as well.
In his previous battle he had opted for a triple battle, so now he felt like changing it up a bit and sending out just one pokemon for a one on one fight. Knuckles didn’t hesitate to follow his command soon as the opponent’s chosen pokemon was revealed, sending out seeds to do minor amounts of damage and healing to himself over time. Afterwards he began to blur some with how quick he began to move, dashing back and forth as a warm up so he could run and react faster than usual.
making it past the first round had been a breeze and now she expects more from her competition. by the time the dark-type user has healed her team and made her way to the next field, she finds that her opponent is already there. "thanks, babe," she calls back, lips curling in a grin when she sees the first pokemon that takes the field. in this case the single battle works in her favor, considering all three of her pokemon have a type advantage to the treecko. for a moment, she thinks of using kidd. it wouldn't take much for the seasoned fighter to take it down, but she chooses lyle instead. after all, the newest additions to her team still need more experience and that's the reason why she's here, after all.
the treecko launches into action and while it's busy bolstering itself with safety moves, nora says, "take the leech seed. use hone claws twice." the sneasel's base stat should still be higher than the treecko, even while under the influence of the agility, so lyle takes the hit from the seeds and bolsters his attack. besides, an extra accuracy boost will help with hitting the faster target, so she doesn't count it as a loss when the seeds start to sprout on lyle's arms.
lyle's claws glisten now and granules of sand fall eloquently as he starts to move. sand kicks up in a cloud behind him as the speedy pokemon darts towards his opponent.
A soft chuckle escaped the strawberry blonde when she called him babe, his nerves calming just a little before he saw what pokemon she sent out to face him. Well this was unfortunate, Dakota couldn’t help but muse as he noted the type disadvantage. At least she wasn’t attacking yet, though it made him a little uncomfortable to see that she was building up the sneasel’s accuracy and attack. His fingers twitched as he was tempted to switch out pokemon immediately, but he hesitated. Not yet.
“Use sunny day, wait for an attack and giga drain directly after,” he ordered, confident that Knuckles would be fast enough to get a carefully timed attack in between the other’s blows. With the healing from giga drain and leech seed, he was hopeful that it would be enough to keep his Treecko in the fight, even if he was hit with two super effective moves. He was nervous, though, that the added power from hone claws would be enough to knock out his Treecko regardless. His plan was risky, but he was holding out.
Knuckles, seeming far more confident than his trainer, wasn’t at all intimidated by knowing he was going against an ice type. If anything, the Treecko was excited to stand up to the challenge. Immediately he created a brighter sunlight for the battlefield, its primary effect being to raise the power of fire moves while decreasing the power of water moves. For Treecko himself it wouldn’t be too useful, but rather he was setting up for his Ponyta. After that he’d wait to take a first blow, before quickly sending out a green, glowing attack to drain some health from the opponent to keep him going for a little while longer.
the sunny day puts her on edge. it doesn't help the treecko in the least unless the grass type is hiding a solarbeam move. certain instructions wait on the tip of her tongue, but when it's clear the treecko isn't attacking with that, she snickers. while it's tempting to use sneasel's ice attack against the grass-type, his boosted attack stat would do far more damage when used alongside feint attack. and the treecko is opening itself right up to a direct hit. should the pokemon even make it through the boosted stab attack, her sneasel at the very least, won't take very much damage from the grass-move. gears are already turning as she wonders whether or not she should do a quick recall once she knocks out the first pokemon.
lyle takes instruction and charges in with feint attack. shadows pulse around him as he gains momentum and he lashes out at the treecko with full force. should the grass-type recover, he'll cringe as he takes the blunt of the hit and follow up with a neatly executed series of slashes from sharpened claws.
Alright, Dakota didn’t expect the sneasel to do quite that much damage. While Knuckles did get the giga drain off after the devastating feint attack, it wasn’t enough to get him to withstand the fury swipes that followed. He felt helpless as he watched, Knuckles dropping unconscious so quickly. Beneath his breath he cursed, returning treecko to his ball before tossing out Tails in his place.
“Try to finish it off with a flare blitz,” he commanded, and Tails didn’t hesitate to light up like a damn Christmas tree and charge down the sneasel with a fiery passion… And body, as it was coated in flames as she charged into the opponent. And even if that somehow wasn’t enough to take the other down, the leech seed that followed likely would do the trick- especially since the sneasel had been hit a couple times already. With the boost from sunny day, he was hopeful that the single attack would do the trick. Sure, it would hurt ponyta a little as well from the collision, but at least Tails would do some serious damage.
“Agility next,” he added on, wanting to see what he was going against next before he ordered more attacks. Whether Seasel still stood or he would be going against a different pokemon, he wanted to be careful.
the combined stat damages do incredible damage to the treecko. nora grits her teeth when it somehow manages to pull out from the feint attack, muscle flicking in her cheek the only indication that something is amiss. when the treecko gets knocked out, she exhales softly. her gaze flickers at the new pokeball that's thrown onto the field and she knows the hand has turned out of her favor when the ponyta enters the field. sunlight still shines down brilliantly on the field and she knows should the fire-type land an attack, that would be an easy knockout to lyle. so when flare blitz comes, she calls for a dodge, only the plants on lyle's arms have continued to grow and the sneasel's usually nimble-footed movements are slow and staggered. he's hit head-on by the charging pokemon and before he can hit the ground, nora returns him.
the fire encompassing the ponyta's body makes her hands hover away from one of her last two pokeballs. the sunny day won't give an advantage to kidd because there's no way in hell she's going to risk boosting the ponyta's attack should it have a flash fire ability. but that's the kicker. ponyta's fire attacks will also be rendered useless against kidd's flash fire. so nora pulls out the houndour's pokeball and throws it into the field. she's careful now that the ponyta has gotten an agility in, but she knows she'll have to be creative to best this one. still, she has kidd's dual-type advantage so she can still deal extra damage with her dark-type moves.
"alright, let's go head on with crunch." the houndour's nostrils flare and then it takes off at a run towards the opposing pokemon. teeth glint in a snarl, but instead of executing the commanded crunch, it grumbles low in its throat and sends a cloud of smog straight towards its opponent. the purple cloud hazes forward and she bites her lip, scratches her thumb as she waits to see if poison will take effect. regardless of the outcome, kidd attempts to further go in with crunch, although the ponyta's boosted agility may just make the opposing pokemon too fast for the move to hit.
While it was satisfying to see Lyle go down, his opponent’s next choice made him frown. The boost to fire moved was basically nullified by the houndour, since it wouldn’t be as effective. There wouldn’t be much point in using flare blitz again, he mused, since the recoil wouldn’t be worth the damage done in return to Tails. He also felt pressured to finish this one with ponyta as well, not wanting the opponent to take advantage of sunny day and hurt him with it in return.
The smog enveloped Ponyta, as he hadn’t anticipated it being used before the crunch, catching both of them off guard. It was successful, too, and Tails already began to feel sickly. “Tails, dodge it,” he yelled out as the pup went in for the actual crunch, and the Ponyta had built up enough speed to move out of the way in time. “Stomp on the houndour, then bounce,” Dakota continued after the successful dodge, Tails quick to comply as well.
Quickly closing the distance between them, Tails stomped down on the enemy hard, before running back fast and turning and leaping high into the air, aiming right for the houndour. With any luck, it would have flinched and be unable to move from that spot.
embers spark out from the corner of kidd's mouth and she barks out a warning. teeth clamp down on air and he crouches down low, lip quivering as more warning growls rumble in his throat. the ponyta rears when its trainer calls and nora takes a split second to decide whether she should risk the flee or go in for some damage. the agility has her stuck in a rut and she knows no matter what happens, one of those attacks is going to land. so she clenches her hands, body nearly as tense as kidd's own.
"try to dodge the stomp. i want another smog. when it leaps for a bounce, grab it with crunch." it's a tangle of legs and hasty footwork; hooves clamp back down and she can't tell if it was on the ground or if kidd had taken a blow to the back. but her houndour stands his ground. another wave of dark purple mist oozes from his jowls. and once he's given the clear, he lunges upwards and attempts to sink his teeth into the belly of the horse pokemon as the two-turn move comes crashing back down.
Again ponyta coughed as she was enveloped by another smog, once more damaged. She was still being hurt over time as well, from the poison. “Jump now,” Dakota called for Tails to jump before the pup reached her, the ponyta able to move fast enough to leap into the air out of the opponent’s reach. She then slammed down on the opponent full force, the momentum from her jump adding more power.
“Stomp again,” he added on, Tails remaining where she landed after hitting the other to again stomp hard on Kidd. With how close they were, he hoped the pup wouldn’t have much time to react and dodge the move again. Tails was visibly growing exhausted and he was worried, chewing on his lower lip as he watched the two pokemon continue to fight before him.
this kind of full force and abrasive battling isn't nora's kind of style and by extension, isn't her pokemon's. kidd is uncomfortable in such close quarters, dealing with massive hooves kicking down on top of him. and perhaps a better person would have had more qualms about what she's going to do, but she's not going to watch this ponyta stomp her houndour into the ground. the next couple of blows could be enough to take him out, but she has another pokemon that hasn't even seen the field yet.
her lips curl. the murkrow might not forgive her for this, but this is a perfect time for the switch with her newly concocted strategy. a red light envelops the houndour just as the ponyta kicks out its front legs. horus replaces his position and the murkrow lets out a startled cry. it all happens in a split second and nora actually raises her voice to call, "assurance!" wings ripple with purple shadows and the bird takes advantage of the close quarters to strike.
the sound of a bell would signify the end of the battle, the screams of the crowd cheering you on as the battle came to a close. up from his seat the umpire went, megaphone in his hand ready to announce the victor.[break][break]
"the victor is nora!"[break][break]
