major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
On, and on, and on. The festival was interesting, maybe even nice, while it lasted, but Lena has a duty to fulfill back where she left off. Lancer descends under the thick cloud cover, the Staraptor's wings casting a monstrous shadow over the long grass below. "Here." The jungle of a route seems to crack open under the beat of his wingspan, giving her a perfect landing zone before she's stuck in the ocean of a field. She suddenly feels very young and very old-- the same feeling of hopelessness puts her stomach in knots as she realizes she's just as short as before, and just as lost in the route. Watching the Staraptor leave the earth once more, Lena is left to consider her options. Fight her way through and risk falling off a cliff side, or burn every strand to the ground. "Lancer, lead, please.". Duh.
As a ranger, the latter would not be the most ethical option. She sighs, using her arms to part the tall grasses in front of her, unaware of what could be waiting for her at any turn. Her eyes are on the sky, following the bird of prey as he attempts to lead her in a straight line to open ground. This is an important lesson. All of the bug types she has to knock away, all of the rustling she has to ignore, it'll all pay off in the end. Her mind wanders as she idly follows the path she has been given.
"how did you get us lost?" he asked the excadrill, who somehow managed to get the two of them lost in the tall grass. they've already cleared the route before, and it should have been as easy it was then. but this time liam let the excadrill lead because it wanted to, and look where the mole led him.
but he wasn't mad by any means; the excadrill screwing up was the best thing to happen today. it looked flustered and almost embarrassed, there was no way the galactic spy could get mad at that.
instead he gave it a pat on the back and a smile. "it's alright, i'm sure you'll lead us out of here. by today hopefully," he laughed. the excadrill was by far his favorite pokemon on his team now, but he was never going to let the milotic know.
the excadrill pushed through the grass in front of it, but the more the mole pushed the more grass started to appear. but as the mole was starting to lose hope it bumped into something - or someone.
the mole looked up with a confused face but it quickly turned into a friendly one, a smile on its face. "oh sorry--" liam stopped.
Oof- she comes to an immediate stop, tripping over herself before she finds her balance, only to come face to face with a smiling excadrill. Her eyes widen, she jumps back in an involuntary motion of fear, eyes frantically searching the sky for signs of her pokemon. With her index finger and thumb in her mouth she whistles for the Staraptor to come back, feeling very lost without its presence with the mole right in front of her. She's already gearing up to fight (with some repressed memories, but that's an old story) when a familiar voice accompanies the mole. Oh. That makes sense. She feels like she's holding her breath as Liam steps out behind the ground pokemon.
"Oh.. hi" she's suddenly incredibly awkward, hands finding each other for comfort, shoe scoffing against the dirt. She sways on her heels a bit, trying to find the words, her eyes still looking up for the bird's shadow to return. "Um.." should she be arresting him? He was a Galactic, after all. He ran missions. Did those missions ever impact the greater good? She's very conflicted, but stalling. There's only so much time between 'ums' she has before the two would be left in uncomfortable silence. Her modified uniform is hardly the garb of the average ranger-- she's panicking on how to hide her badge when Lancer finally returns, perching on his trainer. One leg per each shoulder, Lena staggers under the weight of the raptor, using the opportunity to hide all obvious signs of her change-of-class as she stumbles forward. Red eyes scan Liam as the Staraptor spreads its wings, flapping them forward at the Excadrill with a loud screech. "Stop, stop, stahhhp, please-" she grumbles from under the display of dominance.
"hi," he responded. the girl looked different; no longer was she the cute, innocent trainer who he met on that one gloomy day. he took the time during the awkward moment of silence to carefully examine her from head to toe, noting all the differences and the changes, good or bad. it only took a few moments before the big bid came down from the sky.
liam stood there and watched the bird screech at the poor mole, who only watched on with a confused look on its face. no attempts were made to attack or even to reflect dominance. instead it looked back at liam with a worried look on its face.
"looks like someone's holding a grudge," he told the mole, softly chuckling at his remark. but then he remembered the exact situation behind the grudge and suddenly it wasn't so funny. he turned to look at the girl.
"oh, uh, i didn't mean it like that," he stuttered, the awkwardness of the situation not helping his case. he scratched the back of his head and sighed.
"i'm... sorry about what happened. neither of us intended for that to happen," he spoke, gesturing at the mole who stood below him. he decided it was best to change the topic.
"what have you been up to? i see you've been uh, training," he looked up at the bird who towered over them.
Teeth flash in an awkward smile, one hand holds her arm while the hand that dangles grips the hem of her skirt, twirling the fabric between her fingers as she desperately tries to find the words. A grudge. The smile fades, Lancer's feathers fluff up in agitation, Lena is stuck with her lips parted as she tries to ignore that comment, despite its good intentions. Instead she just sighs, nodding a bit. "No, I know, it's okay.. Accidents happen." Despite that she can feel the lump in her throat come back-- the stone cold exterior crumbles a little bit more as she's forced back into their previous battle. Another screech from Lancer makes her jump, but wakes her up from it.
It's over, done. She knows there's nothing to be done. Instead she glances down at the Excadrill with a mustered smile, trying her best to reassure the pokemon. That was her job now, anyway. It worked out, sort of. The topic change is a breath of fresh air, and she looks up at the bird with a chuckle. "Just a little bit.. You should see Toad." Half tempted to release the Venusaur, Lena likes the mystery she the hint leaves, and she leaves her pokeball alone. She doesn't mention the rest of her team, but the pokeballs are obviously there. "What about you?" Only polite to ask back. She sways, conflicted with how to speak with him.
"It's been pretty lonely, though... Good for focusing, bad for.. what's the word, not sanity... mental health?" she dares to laugh, make a joke out of it. She's obviously not all that fucked up from the whole ordeal-- it's not like she went and offed herself; she must be fine. "Missed you a little bit." Her face reddens (classic), her lips move to what could almost be called a pout. Sure, it's not like they were the best of friends before, but he was one of the people she had gotten to know best on the journey.
the worst part about all of this was that he knew he was to blame; not her, not the excadrill, but him. he was the one who ordered the mole to increase his attack, he was the one who gave the order, he was the one who killed the stunky. he wished he could turn back time and stop the battle from even happening.
but luckily the change of topic was welcomed. hearing her response made the excadrill smile a bit, its guilt a bit lessened but it was still there, lingering on to the poor mole. liam hated himself most for what happened to the excadrill, how it was forced to become a murderer, basically.
"i assume toad's all big now?" he asked, assuming it's now evolved into a venosaur, seeing as the bird has. "just doing what galactic bad guys normally do," he chuckled. but really he had no interesting story to tell, not yet anyway.
the galactic spy laughed, slightly nodding to agree with her comment. "i'm sure your mental health is fine," he affirmed. her next remark caught him by surprise but it was a good one; a bigger smile now on his face than before.
"only a little?" he laughed, a hand reaching down to pet the excadrill to act as a distraction. "i missed you too." the girl was a nice change from the usual galactic bunch he was surrounded with, and he truly appreciated that. he was tempted to text her a few times but he resisted, realizing that she needed some time alone.
"you look great," he complimented. the girl looked different, and he wasn't sure if it was for better or for worse. but just like always he moved the conversation along.
"so, what else did you do besides beefing up your team?" he asked.
She can only hope he doesn't blame himself. If she had never sent out the severely underleveled pokemon, it would have never been a problem. Everything would be fine. Guilt is just about as heavy as Lancer on her shoulders, and if she can ease the pain off of Excadrill she will. Her resentment toward the mole and its owner has long since faded, a big chance from the fuming anger that sent her on a warpath down route 210 just a few days ago.
She huffs. "Damn, you got me-- how did you know?" she laughs with him, only quieting when he brings up Galactic. She suddenly feels very bound by the law- but who would know if she just ignored it? Anyone? Nobody could know what was inside her head... "Oh yeah? Like what?"i'm not a cop i swear, just give me your weed. Her curiosity gets the best of her; she can't help but what to know, ranger or trainer. She only shrugs at the judgement of her mentality, instead she holds on to the words that follow. Conflicting feelings can't stop those same damn butterflies make her clammy and nervous, and excited. Very excited-- the smile shows. It's innocent Lena, it's natural to miss someone you haven't seen. Stop making more out of it.
Never.
"More than a little, but don't get too full of yourself." She forgets how nice it is to joke, even if that wasn't a joke. Smiling, laughing, something that used to be a daily occurrence felt foreign.
Great? Wh-what? What does that mean? Does he think she's pretty? Did he just like her new clothes? Her face? Hair?! What?! She screams internally but only displays a wide smile and a returned you too!. She braces her knees, pushing off the ground just enough for Lancer to startle and take to the air once more; a relieved sigh comes with the weightless feeling. She glances up to follow the bird's path, wraps a nimble hand around Liam's wrist, and tugs. "C'mon, catch up. I'll tell you on the way." Blue eyes stay on the bird's shadow. "Well.. actually there isn't much to tell. Keeping busy, training, repeat."
Is she going to mention she's the only ranger elite in Sinnoh? Absolutely not.
"i think it's too late for that," he winked. there were so little jokes inside galactic that it just felt good to laugh every once in a while. he absolutely hated the people in galactic; in fact, he doesn't think he's ever met anyone he actually likes. the biggest problem was the silverette (adrien arkwright ), he wondered where the fool was now.
"thanks." the return compliment felt good, but he suspected it might have just been said out of habit. soon enough the bird took flight and soared high up in the sky. it was a nice change to see, the once staravia now a staraptor. he could only wonder what the rest of her team looked like.
he followed when his wrist was tugged, noticing how soft her hand was. "really? nothing to tell?" he asked once more. surely there was something else she did, she was different to the lena from before and liam was sure it wasn't just from training. but now it was his turn.
"just the usual missions. oh but i did get promoted: galactic spy has nice ring to it," he replied. he didn't really care how much the girl knew about his galactic life. as far as he was concerned she was the closest thing to a friend in his life at the moment.
"i'm also pretty close to getting the next three badges. i've just been slacking around with zu," he gestured to the mole that was following them, who was shifting between a hop and a run. honestly the mole looked hilarious trying to keep up, which brought an even bigger smile to his face.
"how's your quest to be champion going?" he asked, looking back at the girl.
Lena only turns back to smile at him, only to find her eyes lingering.. his face, neck, collarbone- lips, eyes-- oh. awkward. She's quick to turn away when they make eye contact, instead laughing nervously and carrying forward. "I know, you're always full of yourself." She can see a the very tip of a building ahead now; a nice change just the same open sky. Lancer perches on top of it-- must be a straight shot.
"Nothing exciting. Just a lot of pestering from a lot of people."jason day. adrien arkwright. When would it end? Never, most likely. She holds back a nervous chuckle. "I promise, it's just been training really." she feels her grip loosen on his wrist, fingers falling to intertwine with his-- she's shy, nervous, and can only imagine him pulling away with an awkward apology, but she does it anyway. Maybe it would distract him from wondering about her life. She wants to scream when he keeps talking. Stop giving me this.. evidence she thinks desperately. "Ha, what does that even entail?" Oh, no. Dumb Lena, now he'll keep talking about it. Then again, she does want to know; what does a spy do? What makes them so special?
"I'm working on my third, that's why I'm out here," she adds; the cabin is closer now, she can start to see it through the thinning grass. "The same. People keep telling me I'm on a war path" she chuckles, shrugging. "I thought I was doing what everyone else was."
the galactic spy had no idea about any cabins on the route, but he could see the tip of one as they walked closer to it. he perked an eyebrow, wondering what the cabin would entail. it's probably nothing, probably just a spot to rest and catch up. he was both curious and nervous at the same time, a warm but yet uneasy feeling in his stomach.
it didn't help when their fingers intertwined either. he didn't pull away, it took him a moment but eventually he embraced it, a smile on his face. the warm feeling soon overpowering the uneasy as he was left with even more questions. her distraction worked.
"mostly just reconnaissance and research. galactic needs the two legendary pokemon and so their number one priority is to find any sort of information that might lead us to them." it probably wasn't a good idea to expose galactic's biggest secrets, but then again it wasn't a secret. most knew about their plans, and he trusted the girl enough to tell her about it.
"you are on a warpath," he chuckled, "i've never met anyone more dedicated than you."
the cabin was in sights now as they approached closer. "you even evolved toad and the bird in like one week. that's impressive," he laughed. a lot can happen in a week.
"you're not going to kill me in this cabin, are you?" he joked, the cabin now in front of them.
Her nervousness never really goes away, but the back-and-forth is enough of a distraction that she can forget about them. Until the two finally reach the cabin and escape the grass. The takes a deep breath and looks back at the sea of it, just swaying in the wind. It looks so harmless there. What he's telling her isn't a surprise, but she's not comfortable with it either. If anyone found out that she didn't arrest him on the spot, she could potentially be stripped of all power. She finds herself leaning against the side of the cabin with an exhausted sigh, arm raising with pokeball in hand to recall Lancer.
"Pretty empty for a Friday," she comments, peeking around the edge of the cafe cabin. "It's not a warpath, it's normal" she feigns a pout. "They were pretty close anyway, just needed a little push." She realizes she still has his hand, despite them reaching their (her, rather) destination. She only looks at the hold, feeling her cheeks get hot again as she looks between it and him. "S-Sorry.." She feels like she should pull away upon acknowledging it, so she does. "No, no, I'm not a murderer" she laughs. Standing there, she suddenly feels very awkward. And warm. Really warm.
he expected the warmness to fade when she pulled away, but it didn't. he stood there with a smile on his face, just looking at the girl with the growing levels of awkwardness. "n-no it's fine, really," he said. his hands found the comfort of his pockets instead as he glanced up at the cabin.
the excadrill finally rejoined them, falling behind a while back. liam hadn't noticed the mole falling behind, but once he did he would let out a soft chuckle before lowering himself to one knee. he looked at the mole before giving it a loving pat on the head. "sorry buddy, didn't notice," he whispered. the excadrill understood.
he reached into his pocket to pull out a pokeball, tapping it gently against the mole's head. he stood back up, giving a look at the cabin then back at the girl.
Another smile. There were so many. Her face starts to hurt, she remembers that. Heart beat races, warmth travels through every limb. "Great." she takes his hand again, pulling him inside with her, forceful now. Empty. She glances at the closed door behind them now. Screen. Won't do. Eyes search frantically for something other than this-- a sign on the counter.
"Closed."
Oh, was this breaking and entering? Even better. She loved being in trouble. Not that it matters now. Her grip tightens as she catches the corner of stairs-- a closed off area usually, but if the cafe was closed... she practically drags him up, sneaking at the top one, looking for any signs of life. Lena realizes she's laughing- this is fun. It's exciting. A new place, sneaking around, being together-
Alone.
The upstairs area proves itself to be a game room, littered with couches, single-chairs, and chess boards. She finds herself plopping on to the couch with an exasperated giggle. Adrenaline makes her breath a little harder, think a little faster. She tugs him down with her. They both breathe, they both sit. Line shines in from a dusty window. Just how long had this place been closed? She finds that she doesn't give a shit. Not when she hears her name called, not when she turns to look to him to be greeted with an embrace. Lips meet-- every touch feels like a jolt of electricity. More.
Hands wander. Kisses wander. Clothes are pulled at like confining chains- this is easier than she expected. Natural. And it's just the beginning. More.
it was often hard to have fun when galactic is your main priority. the spy almost forgot how to, but as he was grabbed by the hand and dragged into the cabin, he remembered.
he remembered all the feelings; the joy, the excitement, all complimented with a little bit of mischief. the place was closed, which only seemed to excite him even more. off they went, sneaking around in the empty cabin having a good time. eventually they ended up upstairs.
he wasn't sure if it was the heat of the moment, the memories that sneaking around brought back, or her, but he wanted more. he called out her name, waiting for her to turn before reaching around to pull her close for a kiss. his heart pumped faster with every fleating breath. his eyes start to wander. he let his worries and concerns go, relishing the moment as a part of him took over.
--------
it took him a while, but he finally remembered how to let loose and have a good time; and it was all thanks to the girl; the girl who he thought nothing of when she first bumped into him, the girl who cleaned his room, the girl who got her pokemon murdered by him. all of it came down to this one night.
by the time morning came he was on cloud nine. he woke up first, like he always does, at about eight in the morning. the place was still empty which meant no one had come to claim it back from them yet. he rolled over to the sleeping maiden before giving her a kiss.
Sunset, sunrise. She doesn't notice the difference, too busy tangled with him. All she knows is his voice, right now. The roughness of the couch, the same sun shining through the same dirty window. For a moment she's lost, confused, and terrified. The voice registers. Her panic ceases, instead finding herself pushing to get closer to him, to curl up against him. "No thank you," she grumbles, voice muffled against his skin. When she gets up she knows she'll have to do her job.
She has no choice. There's too much potential for failure, especially after the cranidos fiasco at the event. She's in deep water as it is-- what good is being a ranger elite if nobody respects you for it? Lena crawls on top of him, head resting on his chest. "I still feel exhausted," she laughs, arm dangling down off the couch as a hand searches desperately for the backup cuffs she kept tucked away in her jacket. Nimble fingers find the cold steel-- but she's not done with the moment yet.
Too bad. Work comes first.
She sighs. "I left something out yesterday."
In one swift motion one of the cuffs is wrapped around his wrist, the other around the heavy iron rung of a minimalist bookshelf. She sits up, off of him, promptly clasping her bra and buckling her shirt. "You're under arrest for affiliation and assisting the crime organization known as Team Galactic. Anything you say may be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish." she drones on, voice bored with the necessary line. She fishes his cell phone out of his pants pocket and tosses it on his chest. "You get a phone call to prepare your bail."
With that, she stands and finishes dressing, deciding it best to sit in the chair opposite to the couch.
