five. that's how many badges she has now. because of type advantage, she'd avoided fantina and headed straight for canalave for the mine badge, but this win (or loss) is inescapable. her team's already proved themselves worthy seven fold and despite the crooked nature of battles that house ghost-types, she keeps her head high. she's willow--she's trained a frightening team of dragons before, collected all badges in kanto, and she can do the same here. the onslaught of challengers before the gym are felled with alpha and lyune and by the time she reaches the gym leader, she whispers to alpha's pokeball that he should rest. he's gotten her this far, but the rest of her team is strong. they can handle this. besides, aeris still needs some work. the lights are too dim for her liking; shadows are cast from dim torches that ring the stadium. the surface of the floor is flat and there aren't any obstacles to worry about, but still she stays on her toes after sending her bagon out onto the field. fantina's dress sways as she dramatically lifts and tosses a pokeball into the air. the flash of white is so blinding in the near-dark and willow has a moment's notice to register that the opponent is a drifblim. "focus energy, aeris. stay on guard." the bagon stamps his feet against the ground and growls low in his throat. his fists pump as faint orange light shivers over his scales before fading. "ominous wind." the attack isn't discernible and a gust of purple wind lashes out at aeris. he cranes his head down as he's buffeted, holds on while waiting for orders. "cut through it with headbutt and use crunch." his head jerks down farther and then he stampedes forward, powerful legs thrusting him forward so he can lunge and deliver a swift bite to one of the drifblim's limbs. only he miscalculates and his jaws snap through air. it used minimize. its smaller stature boosts its evasiveness, but it also makes it more nimble. as soon as aeris clears it, it lashes out with black-tipped limbs. the astonish stops aeris in his tracks. "aeris!" a gust of wind balloons from the drifblim and willow watches as aeris is forced helpless against it. "dragon breath." it takes him a couple more seconds, but the lingering effects of the astonish fade and he spits blue fire. it singes the drifblim and the harsh wind stops abruptly. "stay close. get back in there with crunch." he doesn't waste any time; before the drifblim can recover, he delivers a swift bite to its body, clamps down harder when it tries to yank free. it strikes again with another ominous wind and willow just manages to stop aeris from pulling away. his jaws had slackened, but at her call he tightens his grip, lets the damage be dealt, and then uses dragon breath. the flames burn curl right onto the drifblim's skin and it lets out an unearthly screech right before fantina draws it back into its ball. aeris stands triumphant for a moment before his legs give in. he faints, but before he can hit the ground, willow withdraws him and replaces him with roman. the gabite lifts his head, splays his feet apart and eyes fantina. she swallows when fantina throws out her gengar. it moves quickly, but roman's just as fast. when it comes close enough with a raised purple fist, he dodges easily, rakes his claws against the pokemon's backside. the ghost-type's laughter sends chills down willow's spine, but she smiles when the gengar melds into the ground, shadow skulking under roman's feet. "let's not give it something to aim for, hm?" she's not sure if it will work considering the flooring of the gym isn't exactly open ground. but roman's claws tear through the floorboards easily and within seconds, he's disappeared under the gym's stadium. willow's eyes lift to fantina and she sees faint surprise coloring her features. the gengar reemerges upon her command, gaze flickering left and right as it tries to track roman. even willow has no idea where she is, but as heartbeats measure time, she's perfectly calm. he emerges right below him, makes contact both with dig and another slash of dragon claw. the gengar flinches, but it doesn't stumble, backtracks only two steps because of roman's larger size, and comes straight back in to deliver a poison jab to the dragon-type's gut. roman hunches over from the impact, a short hiss of sound slipping past his teeth. bright white-blue claws arc down towards the gengar, just as it raises shadow claw. the two grapple with each other until roman twists, knocks the gengar back with a twist of his hips. one more slash with dragon claw and it's down. "we're almost there, roman," she calls. "only one left." the gabite gives her a wave to tell her he's heard and then snorts when a mismagius takes the field. "go in with dragon claw, but be careful." roman charges, but the aggressive attack is short-lived before he comes to a halt where he's standing, arms raised in confusion. he scratches at his head, shakes it, lets out a low, keening sound. "get back, roman. there's a shadow ball headed your way." but the confused pokemon can't tell right from left and gets the wind knocked out of him when the ball hits him straight on. his knees buckle and he bellows in frustration, shakes out the last of the confusion and then surges back upwards in a rage. silver-tipped claws dig into the mismagius' side and the ghost-type trembles. she gathers a faint pink light in her hands and willow calls for roman to pull back. the psybeam leaves a smoking trail in the gym floor as it snakes after him. he rounds around her in a circle, darts back in to deliver two more swift blows from his claws. but he gets greedy, tries to go in for a third strike and suffers a knockout blow. "watch out for the confuse ray," she says when she throws her last pokeball. thunderous claps echo around the sparse walls as she flaps her wings. she stays aloft, flits left and right so the mismagius can't get a lock on her. magical leaf ricochets towards her, but she dodges around it easily, swooping down collide with the ghost-type. she reveals two long fangs when she opens her mouth, both of which sink into the mismagius' translucent purple flesh. the bite from the flygon is the last hit the ghost-type could take and with one last attempt to shake her off, it falls. echo returns to willow's side and the dragon tamer scratches the soft scales by the base of her neck, grins up at her before they walk together to fantina to receive their sixth badge. @mod used flygon, gabite, and bagon for this battle |
