when you lie i cover it up when you hide i cover it up when you cry i cover it up | For weeks now, Scarlette had been fighting with herself on how to go about challenging gyms. She had seen Caine rising in the ranks like a champion, easily getting stronger and stronger every day. They had, at one point, been on the same playing field. Now, however, it was clear that if she ever tried to challenge him, she would be destroyed. Thankfully, the young redhead had obtained some Pokemon that would benefit her greatly. Which was part of the reason she had finally decided it was a good idea to take on the Oreburgh gym. Roark had been worrisome at one point, a real threat against her flying type team. Scarlette had quickly made use of Juliet's water type abilities and done her research. She, too, had recently caught a Geodude similar to Roarks. He had been completely wiped out by Scarlette's Ducklett. She may have a chance at this. Pushing open the doors to the Oreburgh gym, Scarlette quickly announced her presence. "Hello? I'm here to challenge the gym. Is Roark around?" She had taken a few steps onto the concrete floor, unnerved a little by how her steps echoed. It wasn't long though until the red-headed gym leader appeared. He seemed to be holding himself in a pretty macho stance, sizing up his new opponent. Scarlette felt her ears grow hot with irritation and slight embarrassment. "I'm Roark, and you are? You look a little.. young to be challenging a gym." he said, peering down at her. The woman's cheeks grew hot. "My name's Scarlette, and I don't take well to insults. Let's just get started, skip the small talk." she said, trying to stifle her anger and keep herself in check. Roark laughed, shrugging and directing her to one end of the battlefield. The arena was huge, set with giant rock obstacles and rough undertow. The terrain was definitely suited to rock type Pokemon. It was spooky for Scarlette, who had never really been a fan of the ground. She shrugged off her nervous energy, pushing her red hair over one shoulder so she could focus. Roark had taken the chance to release his first Pokemon, a Geodude. It looked so much like Scarlette's own Geodude that she seemed a little surprise. She supposed that all Geodude looked the same. Distracted! She was distracted. That was humiliating. Stealing and lying and cheating were all easy or her. Now that she was doing something completely legal and not difficult, she found herself lost. In her hand, Scarlette held a pokeball. Of course she had a pokeball, this was a Pokemon battle. After sizing up the Geodude, she had made the decision to use Juliet. Her first gym battle, it would be appropriate to bring one of her closest partners. The pokeball popped to release the small water duck, whom fluttered her wings and quickly settled onto one of the taller rocks. There was so much dust everywhere, the bird was insulted. "That's either brave or foolish, sending a bird into a rock type gym. Are you sure you're ready?" Roark asked, a slight tone of mockery bubbling up in his voice. Scarlette clenched her fist, "Wait till I beat you, then you'll know better than to insult me." she snapped. Juliet had made eye contact with her competition, and seemed intrigued. She had already defeated a Pokemon like this, this would be a peace of cake. Roark hadn't said a word, letting his Geodude stand by. Scarlette took this as an advantage. She could move first and get the first attack. "Okay, Juliet. The first time we faced off against Geodude, flying type moves didn't have that much of an effect. They really don't like water, though. Let's get 'em wet, shall we?" She could feel her confidence rising, and excitement surged as the Ducklett took to the sky. It circled the Geodude once, water bubbles foaming around her beak. Before long, Juliet's water pulse left her mouth, soaking the Geodude in the cold water. It's cry of shock was gutteral. Roark seemed to respond quickly, though his expression of cocky arrogance had not wavered despite the super effective attack. "Geodude, use stealth rock. Make sure that, when we defeat Ducklett, whoever comes next isn't so easily welcomed." Geodude responded quickly, efficiently setting up sharp rocks all around the arena. It meant that if Scarlette switched out Juliet, whoever the replacement was would be injured upon entering. Juliet didn't seem all too fazed, and she settled on another tall rock. She could avoid the stealth rock from here. Scarlette began to think fast, while the Geodude was distracted, she could perhaps try to penetrate a weak spot. "Juliet! Use water pulse one more time." Another blast of the powerful water attack surged, coming in fast against the Geodude. Roark was faster. "Quickly! Geodude use rock throw! Block that water pulse, and aim for the Ducklett!" Quicker than anticipated, the Geodude turned on the spot, throwing several rocks up into the air. It quickly dissipated the water pulse, sprinkling droplets of water where it had been stopped. Juliet, unable to respond fast enough, was easily hit by the flying rocks. One in particular hit her wing, and pain flared up almost immediately. Her cries of pain alerted Scarlette to the problem. "Flying type are weak to rock types, Scarlette. You've made a grave mistake." Roark said snidely. "Juliet, use feather dance. We have to lower the Geodude's attack. Then, use another water pulse. He's already slowed down considerably, we just have to be faster!" Ducklett was also slowing down however, her wing seriously injured in the last attack. Her feather dance was short and sweet, but seemed to have distracted the Geodude enough that he had stopped attacking. Juliet blasted another dizzying water pulse again, and this time, the Geodude's reaction time had slowed after being hit the first time. Although Scarlette's Pokemon were not strong, the water type attack had had a very dramatic attack on the rock and ground type. Therefore, when the explosion of water cleared, Geodude was found unconscious. Scarlette was a little surprised by how easy the first opponent was, which likely meant that the next one would be even more difficult. While Roark returned his Pokemon, Juliet proceeded to use roost, tucking her head over her injured wing to rest a bit. The healing remedies of her action had healed her wing slightly, evident in the way she had begun to use it a little more. However, the unexpected roar of her next opponent was startling, even more so when more rocks had been thrown. Roark had immediately sent out an Onix, another Pokemon, ironically that Scarlette had! "Dodge it, quickly!" Scarlette voice faded into the background of Roark's Onix's screeching. Poor Juliet had been rooted to the spot, and was quickly overpowered by the avalanche of rocks being throw. Although she had managed to fly out of the way of some, her injured wing had hindered her speed, and she fell victim to the Onix's attack. Her earlier roost apparently had not granted her enough strength to power through it, and she also crumpled to the ground unconscious. Scarlette cursed under her breath, worried more so now that her Ducklett was unable to be used. She had been the best option for this gym, her saving grace. Perhaps her strategy had not been the best. Well, she could always fight fire with fire, right? Scarlette had also released an Onix onto the field. Technically neither of them were fire types, but the joke was still there. "Onix, we can outsmart him, can't we? Use dragon breath!" she called, pointing at Roark's Onix. Surprisingly, her own Onix moved fast, coming in hot on his opponent. His mouth was held open, and powerful dragon energy exploded from his throat, channeling into the other Onix's face. It seemed to moan in pain, but was quickly responding. He had begun to screech again, and Scarlette covered her ears. The second time hurt even worse than the first. Fortunately, her own Onix did not seem that rattled. Roark wasn't finished however. "Onix, use rock throw again!" he commanded. In Scarlette's Onix's open mouth, the opponent threw rocks. While her Onix choked and spit them out, the tension on the field was beginning to rise. "Onix, rock polish and gyro ball, go! Hit em where it hurts." Excited, her Onix sped around the arena, rubbing his massive serpentine body against the rocks until his rocky hide shone. His speed had been raised greatly, and he proceeded to curl into a ball, rolling into the side of the other Onix. The crash was intense, and the other Onix was quickly overpowered and thrown backwards. Dust and rocks flew up in the attack, and a great indent in the ground left from where the Onix had fallen. Unfortunately, the attack did not seem to have hurt quite as badly as Scarlette had anticipated. Perhaps the rock polish had been a mistake? The onix seemed worn out by now however, battered and bruised despite being made of rocks. Once again, it threw more rocks towards Onix, despite the poor effect it seemed to be having. Scarlette's Onix, quite pleased with himself, had once again used its dragon breath. This time, Roark's Onix didn't appear to be getting up. Try as it might, the Pokemon appeared paralyzed! Scarlette whooped, cheering her serpentine beast on. Her Onix roared in triumph, and quickly began to try and squeeze whatever remaining consciousness was left in the other Onix. "Onix! Get up, buddy, you can do this! I'm counting on you!" Unfortunately, no dice. As Roark's Onix fainted, he was quickly returned. Scarlette's Onix quickly made it's way back to its own side of the field, waiting with bubbling excitement for his next opponent. Easily one of Scarlette's strongest teammates, she herself was also becoming supercharged with adrenaline. It appeared so far that she was winning, and Onix did not appear to be that injured. Perhaps she could win this with just Onix! Roark, now seeming a little on edge, but also impressed with Scarlette's abilities, released his final Pokemon. "Not bad, not bad. Never seen another Onix face off against each other, yours was clearly the more superior. You've done well training it." he said. Cranidos, if possible, seemed the most excited for this fight. His feet scratched at the dirt, his head down as he prepared for whatever his trainer had in mind. "Cranidos, use headbutt!" The Pokemon immediately ran forward, head connecting with Onix's body.. only for him to bounce backwards quite unceremoniously. The Onix peered down as if the Cranidos were a pesky bug. Scarlette snickered, quite amused by this. "Let's show him how it's really done. Use bind!" Onix wrapped it's large body around the Cranidos, making the attempt to crush it in the harmful and rough rocky body he had. The Cranidos frantically began to struggle, leering up at his enemy to try and intimidate. Unfortunately, that didn't really seem to be working, as Onix just continued to squeeze harder and harder. In response however, Onix used another bout of his dragon breath, which the Cranidos flinched at. "Cranidos, use headbutt to escape!" Furious, the Cranidos began to headbutt and headbutt smashing over and over and over until the Onix was forced to let go. Uncurling himself, the Onix turned to face the small dinosaur. It was scraping its feet again, leering at the Onix with malicious intent. As Roark commanded him to use headbutt again, Scarlette called out: "Steamroll him! Use gyro ball!" With that, the giant serpentine beast rolled directly into the Cranidos, flattening the poor sucked into the ground. It didn't move, and was considered unconscious. It appeared that Scarlette had won! Roark returned his flattened Pokemon and had begun to make his way towards the girl. Scarlette had returned Onix, and turned to face him. "I underestimated your strength, and the bond between you and your Pokemon. You and your team could use some work, but there's a lot of potential. I present you the Oreburgh city gym badge, this TM stealth rock, which, as you saw, damages your opponents Pokemon as they enter the battlefield, as well as some prize money. Congratulations!" |
