It was the first time Athena had ever heard of anyone being able to replace the gym leader as long as they had enough cash to reel in the position. Well, that and maybe a team consisting of a single type. She still thought of their one type style was rather foolish.
The new gym leader however, was probably more adequate for a good match against Athena, instead of Mylene, who was more of a fighting type user. She knew how that fight would go down.
As she entered the Gym, she requested for a fight with the new Gym leader, who was a Poison specialist. They made quick introductions of each other, not many words to exchange though so they got on with the fight. Athena nodded as they headed towards the gymnasium open space.
She did raise an eyebrow at the environment. It still looked like a fighting dojo. Was the change recent or were they just that slow with the renovations?
Athena shook it off. The battle was about to start.
Cassidy sent out first her Nidoqueen. A ground/poison type. Athena nodded and thought about her selection. She snapped her fingers, and took out a Pokeball, releasing Mercury from its spatial confines. It landed on the battlefield, shaking the floor.
The Gym leader wasted no time on attacking, using Earthquake twice in hopes of one-shotting the metal-type. Athena instructed Metagross to evade it using Magnet Rise. With the floating metal type safely out of harm's way from ground-type moves, it was time retaliate. Athena instructed Metagross to use Metal Mash on Nidoqueen, hoping to raise it’s attack power.
The attack did some damage, but Nidoqueen retaliateed with Ice Beam. Ice Beam made contact, though it only shaves off some of it’s health. Athena recovered quickly telling Mercury to use Psychic to throw the Nidoqueen up, and then use Ice Punch. Nidoqueen attempted to use Roar, but Metagross grabs it with its Psychic powers, and throws it up in the air. As it lands, Metagross quickly hovers below it to deliver a cold hit with Ice Punch, effectively knocking it out.
Cassidy does not comment, but releases her next Pokemon, which is a Gengar, while withdrawing Nidoqueen. Magnet Rise ended and Metagross landed on the ground, the steel type and the ghost type glaring at each other. She didn’t have to fear any Poison moves affecting her, but Gengar was Ghost type too.
Athena instructed Metagross to use Metal Mash, and then Psychic. As it approached the Gengar to deliver the blow, the ghost Pokemon flew over it, and attempted to use Hypnosis on it, followed by Hex. The Gengar did not account for the following Psychic, which was used to throw it back at Cassidy. Gengar did manage to use Hex, dealing considerable damage to Metagross, but not quite.
The scientist instructed Metagross to use Metal Mash one more time for a finisher. Cassidy, unperturbed, instructed Gengar to use Destiny Bond. The result match ended in a draw, though this was in favor of Athena. Cassidy’s only Pokemon left was it’s Venasaur.
Athena withdrew Metagross, a smile on her face still. It had done quite well, if she was to be honest. Athena released Tanzsprache next, who's buzzing filled the entire dojo. They quickly got to their fight. Cassidy instructed the Venasaur to use Toxic, followed by Venoshock. If that hit. It would deal a lot of damage. Thankfully, Cassidy evaded the Toxic, leaving the Venoshock to deal moderate damage. Athena instructed Tanza to use Heal Order, and followed by Gust.
With energy restored, Venasaur got hit by the full brunt of Gust. They weren’t finished yet, however. Athena instructed Tanz to use Bug Bite, followed by another Gust. The attacks managed to successfully hit their target, but it only managed to reduce it below half it’s health. It was then that Venasaur started to glow a fierce green.
Athena nodded curiously as Venasaur’s overgrow activated, and Cassidy instructed it to use Solar Beam. The scientist instructed it to use gust again, and bug buzz, and while reducing its health significantly, the Solar Beam also reduced Tanz’ health by half. However, another Bug Buzz from a struggling Vespiquen just did the trick, and Venasaur fainted.
Congratulations were in order.
