Her hands clenched at her sides, Kay stepped up the podium meant for her, facing the rock type gym leader, Roark. The battle would begin soon.
She had been ushered into the gym but a few minutes ago, instructed to wait until the gym leader was ready. Then she had been called into the fighting arena.
A gym specialised. Unlike what trainers were expected to do, gyms specialised in one type, making it simple for trainers to defeat. Not to mention that rock types had plenty of weaknesses that could be easily found around Sinnoh.
She hadn't bothered to capture any grass types herself, despite the fact that their were a commodity in Sinnoh. She had better. Not that it mattered. She was going to smash this gym whether she had an advantage or not.
Roark signalled for her to release her first Pokemon, and she complied, a burst of white heralding the appearance of Ra. The skarmory raised his wings, screaming out his defiance against the geodude Roark had sent out. The referee signalled, and the battle started.
Ra struck first, wings beating to lift himself up, diving towards the geodude. Steel wing clashed against rock-hard skin for moments until the skarmory ducked back, taking to the heights once more. The geodude crumbled, hanging on by a bare thread. It managed to reltiliate, however, rising several rocks in the air, several pummelling Ra, the others hovering threatening around her.
Kay raised an appreciative eyebrow. She hadn't expected that the opposing gym leader would think to set up the field. Most considered stealth rock to be a wasteful move, but since her original plan was to switch her Pokemon around, allowing one to get a few hits in, before switching to negate some of the damage. That would have to change, though it wasn't much of a setback.
She flicked her hand, signalling for Ra to attack again. The rocks had done a moderate amount of damage, several small cuts opened despite the skarmory's steel feathers, not serious by any means, but certainly a reminder that the skarmory wasn't invincible. Nonetheless, the skarmory proceeded to attack, darkness gathering around her wings as he slashed down on the geodude. The night slash provided too much for the Pokemon, and Roark recalled it, before releasing the giant rock snake that was known as Onix.
Skarmory were rather large, for Pokemon, standing almost as tall as an adult of average height. The onix, however, towered over the bird. She doubted that Ra was out of reach of the creature's bite, despite the fact that the bird was flying.
Not that it couldn't be taken down with a few well-placed hits, of course.
It slammed its tail against the floor, rocks shaken from their position before a well placed tail whack sent the rocks towards the skarmory. Rock throw. It seemed that the gym leader was finally getting offensive. Ra was thrown back slightly, but soon flew forwards once more, steel wings glowed silver as he brought them down against the onix's skin, causing a large gash to appear. The large snake was not nearly as weak as the geodude. Still, another steel wing brought it down relatively quickly, sending it crashing onto the floor of the gym.
The slumped form of the onix was soon replaced by Roark's final Pokemon, cranidos, who immediately charged the skarmory, intending to knock the bird out of the air with a headbutt. The attack hit, but Ra's steel feathers protected him from the worst of it. The bird used the pokemon's proximity to her advantage, bring her steel wings down in a practiced motion. The cranidos went down noiselessly, granting Kay her first win, as well as the coal badge.
"And that." The girl muttered under her breath. "Is why you never specialise."
