Like he said, there was badge here that belonged to him. Eterna City gym; stomping ground of “the master of vivid plant pokemon,” Gardenia, and the next stepping stone on what Johnny deemed his path to greatness. The gym itself is draped in multiple shades of green and the battlefield is adorned by various kinds of shrubbery and plant-life. The self-proclaimed hero-for-hire stares straight ahead at only the second gym leader he’s ever faced, excitement tugging at the corners of his lips. Gardenia states that it’s time for their battle to begin, and Johnny responds with an eager ”Let’s rock!” Pokeballs get tossed towards the ceiling, with two streams of light revealing a STARAVIA on Johnny’s side and a CHERUBI on Gardenia’s. QUICK ATTACK is Johnny’s opening gambit, and his staravia flies just so: straight and narrow, with a direct hit on Cherubi. Gardenia commands her already injured pokemon to use LEECH SEED. Sure enough, a draining seed is attached to staravia’s body, and the bird pokemon is clearly pained by the gradual draining of its energy. ”Let’s hurry and finish this with AERIAL ACE, Freddie!” Johnny commands. The bird responds with a squawk and dives in on the small Cherubi. Another direct hit, and that’s enough to faint the frail grass type. Gardenia recalls the pokemon and sends out a TURTWIG. Immediately, the effect of leech seed rears it’s ugly head. Staravia’s vitality is drained once more, this time being siphoned by Gardenia’s turtwig. Johnny’s face contorts in concern, and he figures he needs to end this round even more decisively than the first. ”AERIAL ACE, again!” the staravia goes for it, and Gardenia’s response is immediate. She commands her turtwig to use ”WITHDRAW”, and the brunt of staravia’a attack is taken by the pokemon’s hard shell. Not wasting any time, the gym leader follows up the defense with RAZOR LEAF in staravia’s direction and while it’s something the bird pokemon could usually brush off thanks to its type, the use of move combined with the effects of leech seed wear it down greatly. One more push is all Johnny can reasonably hope for out of his pokemon. ”AERIAL ACE, one more time!”, and so goes staravia. The force of its wings bring the Turtwig down, and while Johnny finds the victory bittersweet considering that he battled from a position of desperation, he’s nonetheless satisfied. Both trainers switch out their pokemon, with Gardenia releasing a ROSERADE and Johnny deciding to use his PIGNITE. The hero trainer keeps in mind how much longer than necessary it took to win the last round and doesn’t waste any time before making a move. ”Biggie, FLAMETHROWER, now.” Gardenia commands her pokemon to dodge, but Johnny commands his Pignite to continue spewing fire. The roserade can only dodge for so long before being hit by the attack, and is too burned out to continue, the type disadvantage of the match up doing it no favors. Johnny recalls his pignite and looks expectantly at Gardenia, saying with his eyes what he doesn’t believe he needs to say with his words. There’s a badge there that belongs to him. |
