major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
it's different here. the snow is a quiet blanket that muffles her footsteps. boots sink softly into the drifts. she clutches her jacket closer, tugs her scarf up over chapped lips. the snow reminds her of ash. both alpha and echo walk beside her. they've left a motley of trainers behind, left tending to their wounded pokemon. but now they're out of reach from any possible challengers, climbing higher and higher up the mountainside. once, she nearly slips, breath caught when she realized just how far they'd climbed. now she hugs the inside, worriedly ushers echo closer to her when she feels the trapinch is getting dangerously close to the edge.
there aren't many who are willing to make the trek. back in kanto, she'd done this. and it's somewhat relaxing, albeit sad, reliving the adventure. except last time she'd done this, she hadn't been this damn cold. alpha attempts to ramp up the heat, but there's only so much the small fire-type can do. her toes are wet in her boots, but personal thoughts are shrugged aside when large boulders block their path.
she releases the mankey she'd received from a trade a few weeks prior. "strength." with effort (and with some help from her other pokemon), they manage to move aside those blocking her path. she stills suddenly, tilts her head. she can hear them. alpha and echo are returned to their ball once they reach the end of the trail. she motions her mankey over, knots her fingers in his thick fur, and orders rock climb.
at the top, the weaker pokemon is returned and replaced yet again with her charmander and trapinch. both pokemon are on the alert. she hears them sifting in the snow, hisses and roars turned to murmurs from the snow. "we're close."
hm slave mankey used rock climb + strength gimme those dragons yo
her cheeks are cherry red. starlight hair sticks to her neck, wet and cold from the flurries that swirl around her. they move forward, slower than they'd been moving before. it's hard to tell what's what. shadows stretch and the sunlight that bounces off the expanse of white hurts her eyes. they'd started their trek earlier in the morning and already the sun is dipping lower in the sky. she urges her pokemon forward, knowing full well she doesn't want to be trapped up here at night with dragons.
as soon as she's thought that, her foot slips. snow dislodges from under her and she rolls onto her ankle, slides down a drift. alpha and echo scramble after her, but she's barely paying attention. she's awestruck. several pokemon have shaken snow from their hides and stand tall. the gabite watch her warily and only when alpha and echo take offensive stances in front of her do they lash their tails, flare their nostrils. and before she can target one, they grow disinterested. they leave.
she tries to trudge after them, but the snow is too thick, too deep. a keening sound makes her glance to the left. a gible pokes its head out from behind a tree, waddles forward while eyeing them curiously. "alpha, get in close with a fire fang. i don't want it to follow the others." the charmander nods. it will be no easy task to take down the dragon-type, even if it's unevolved. but she wouldn't be here if she couldn't do it.
alpha moves first, races across the snow with nimble feet. embers spark and while it attempts to execute the move, echo scuttles forward, maw open to deliver a bite. only the gible sidesteps both of them easily, slaps them down with dragon claw. it tilts its head, sniffs down at the trapinch as she slowly gathers herself to her feet. when she realizes it's looming over her, she startles, trips over herself and sinks into loose snow.
not the best terrain to fight. she contemplates pulling her pokemon back, thinks maybe this had been too soon for them. but surprise colors her features when the gible noses up against echo and helps her get to her feet. alpha bares his teeth and comes between them; flaming teeth sink deeply into the gible's side. it tosses alpha off like a rag doll, prattles out a low growl of warning.
it reaches out for echo again, surprisingly mumbles something to her, and willow watches as her trapinch's eyes narrow. the superpower is uncalled for and sends the gible flying into the bark of a tree. snow dislodges from pine leaves and slumps down onto the tiny dragon. alpha's huffs, willow realizes, are his laughter.
the gible eventually manages to crawl out from the snow and then it just stands there. both of willow's pokemon look back at her. so she dislodges a ball and she throws.

in all her years, she still hasn't fought a wild pokemon like this. did that even count as a fight? she has no idea, but she goes to scoop up the ball anyway, pockets it while she calls her pokemon towards her. echo seems a little worse for wear, but she insists she's fine to move on. so they do. she's grateful when alpha takes a couple of steps closer, sure he'd noticed the trembles in her fingers. she keeps an eye on the setting sun, on the watch on her wrist. they only have so much time before they can make their way back down the mountain safely. the charmander's light will be enough to guide them down come dusk, but should night fall, they'll be forced to take shelter.
she can hear more wild pokemon shifting and seething in the snow. they're not used to newcomers up here and so they're skittish. though some of them bare their fangs as she walks by; she steers clear of some of the more territorial groups. it's when she spots a lone skrelp that she stops, brows furrowing in puzzlement. then she notices that it's not a fish out of water. it's in a hot spring. steam billows out around it and the light fog covers most of the pokemon from view. it continues to swim, oblivious to the trainer and her two pokemon that creep closer.
and then she notices there are more. a strange find, but a worthwhile catch all the same. "alpha, let's get a flamethrower aimed in the pool. echo, follow up with superpower." the charmander gnashes his teeth together and bounds forward. the flamethrower sends the skrelp scattering, but as it turns out, they were ready. the turn when echo runs near the shore; disbelief is shortlived when the trapinch's superpower phases straight through one of the skrelp.
"it used double team! stay on guard. alpha, from your--" but her warning comes too short. the water pulse blasts her charmander in the side and her heartbeat stutters when she sees that some of the fat drops had sizzled onto her pokemon's tail. his light flickers once, twice, and then the flames crackle. she takes a stumbling step forward and tells him to draw back, but he stands his ground. a soft glow takes over his body and she stops; confusion is scant. she's seen this before and suddenly she's thrown back to another time, back to the first time any of her pokemon had evolved, the first time her charmander had evolved.
she knows it's alpha standing before her, that his mother is long gone, but still she reaches forward, touches his shoulder just like she had all those years ago. he reaches her shoulder now, shoots her a sideways grin as he clasps clawed paws over her hand. and then he shoves her to the side, backpedals to dodge the toxic that had been aimed towards them.
"let's finish it." echo charges forward with another superpower and this time the charmeleon's flamethrower, larger than it's ever been before, blasts the skrelp dead-on. she waits until he closes his mouth again to throw another ball.
snow dislodges and plops into the water as she scrambles forward as soon as the pokemon's encapsulated in the ball. she sticks her hand into the spring, clasps fingers around it before it can sink. she straightens once it stops shivering and then puts the ball on her belt. the cold wind isn't kind to her sodden arm. "we should head back," she murmurs to alpha when he goes to help her back out of the drift.
she can't help but marvel at the charmeleon. nostalgia is bittersweet, but still she stops him as they walk with a hand on his shoulder. "your mother would have been proud." they don't say things like this, don't ever acknowledge what happened back when him and echo were still just children. he blinks at her and she holds her breath, only lets out a sigh when he leans in against her.
"we'll still have time if we hurry. the base of the mountain might be--" but she stops, narrows her eyes when she sees a lone bagon eyeing them from behind a tree. we came all this way. while champion and opal had been her go-to pokemon, she'd also worked tireless nights with the rest of her team. dragon master, they'd call her. and it is a calling now, one that makes her stop and point, tell her pokemon to go. that they have to do this fast.
she removes the gible from her belt considering he'd taken next to nothing damage and sends him out. it's risky, considering she's never worked with him before, but when he starts to wander over near echo, the trapinch nips him in the leg and chitters something angrily. "dragon rage and superpower. gible, you wait your turn and then show me what you got with a dragon claw." alpha and echo run in tandem towards the bagon. both pokemon share breaths, heartbeats, thoughts, and when alpha darts forward first to deliver a blow, echo swoops in as soon as he rears back. the bagon is knocked backwards by the force of the blows.
her gible takes a few seconds longer than it should to start running and by the time it's there to attempt to pull of dragon claw, the bagon has gotten to its feet and reared its head. the headbutt comes down hard against her pokemon and gible lets out a groan as small arms reach for its head. "alpha, echo." they take advantage of the distraction to deliver more strikes. and this time, the bagon is felled. her heart skips a beat and she grabs hastily for a pokeball, throws it before the pokemon can attempt to stand.
