not good enough.
the battle ends, dust settling, fire burning as his heart races. he breathes, calming himself as he walks over to collect his spoils of war. he keeps the badge safely, count now increasing to two, another mark on sinnoh. he's strengthening, slowly rising, reclaiming his position in rocket. though he struggles with his new team, the fire bird being the main problem. it's strong, but he couldn't shrug off past memories and fears about it.
that wouldn't matter now as he leaves the gym. his eyes catches a glimpse of someone approaching, a familiar face, naomi. he enjoys her company, their missions generally good but that was as far as it extended. he doesn't acknowledge her, knowing well that it would not be appropriate. instead he sits outside, waiting for her battle to be over. that was the reason she was here, wasn't it?
he sits on a nearby bench that faces the entrance, legs kicked up with his phone in his hands, just passing the time in whatever way he knows. news stayed the same, all revolved around rockets and their plans, goals, though it was all speculation from the media.
his ears picks up the opening of the door, sliding smoothly. eyes find the woman, trailing her out of the gym. finally he stands up and walks over to her. "nyx," he calls out, smile as bright as the sun on his face, "did you win?"

Yet many a man is making friends with death even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
naomi sees lucas before her challenge, but, like lucas, doesn't bother acknowledging his presence. she knows the limit of their relationship and has learned that she doesn't want to push further. close is already too close, in her eyes. her gym challenge lasts a while, maybe around half an hour considering all the formalities. so when, newly endowed with her forest badge, she finds lucas sitting outside the gym, waiting for her still, she's a little more than disturbed.
"lucas," she says, clearly bewildered at the sight of him still here. "i thought you would have left an hour ago." she's scanning him now, already trying to come up with reasons he might be here-- maybe there's another mission that they've been assigned given their grand success in the pre-sky tower hijacking phase. but he just continues the conversation, and naomi, being skeptical, shrugs off the question easily. "yeah, second badge. feels like i'm nineteen again." granted, she was threatening to cut throats and robbing people at nineteen, but she didn't have to acknowledge that.
"is there something the matter?" she asks, unable to hide the concern from her voice.

has it been an hour? he must have lost track of time. to her question he could only shrug his shoulders. "no, i had nothing to do. schedule's clear, for once," he replies. off-days are uncommon for someone like him, someone who still needed to prove themselves. he's had, on multiple occasions, but rockets had their concerns, and quite frankly he couldn't blame them.
he laughs at her remark, shaking his head in disbelief. "nineteen can't have been that long ago, can it?" his comment made in the most sincere way possible. he's caught off guard by the worry in her voice, but then realizes that it must've been strange for him to wait almost an hour for her outside the gym, especially since they aren't that close. but he tries his best to be friendly with everyone, keen on having more friends than enemies.
"nothing's the matter, why do you ask?" he knows the answer to his question already, most likely, but he asks anyways. "is everything okay with you?" he asks in return, and then another. "how's sinnoh treating you?"

"oh," naomi says, taken aback a little, and immediately regretting her anxious disposition, the same one that is quick to evaporate as he shrugs it off. obviously. lucas is just enjoying a day where he's not busy doing something or the other, and naomi can't blame him. but the question is, why's he spending a good portion of the day just chilling outside the eterna gym. maybe it's his turn to go in? but no. he had just left as she entered.
what he says next catches her off guard, causing her to be a little pleased and putting an idle, lazy smile on her face. "ahaha, you flatter me. it must have been a decade or so..." her birthday seems to be crawling around the corner, but it's been a while that she stopped celebrating. she doesn't have a response as to why he's asking, so she just ignores the question and moves on to the next.
"yeah, everything's fine." she just met up with reid, did a mission with him after what felt like a century, and she's got her second badge in the sinnoh league. she's doing fine. "it's been alright. i actually like the cold, you know." many of the grunts from kanto had been complaining about it, but the unique divide provided by mt coronet was something that interested naomi, and hey, she wasn't stationed in snowpoint so she couldn't really complain.
she's not an extraordinarily talkative person, so she's not quite sure what to say, or how to say it. whatever. from their few missions, she guesses lucas is more than enough to keep the conversation going.

"a decade? i find that hard to believe," he comments, but doesn't pursue further than that. he understands her point, time flies by quickly, but for him the past few years have been excruciatingly slow. he's had to get through so much, the fire, loss, grief. he finds rocket's methods a bit cold, to have even approached him, to ask, no, force him back out on the field after such a short period of time.
but he digresses, it's been rough, but he's here, all safe and sound. "good," he comments after hearing everything's fine. sinnoh's much colder than kanto, and he's been enjoying it. it's a nice change of pace, and in a way the difference makes him feel more separated from his past.
"i think there's a town here that snows all the time, snowpoint, i think?" he says. he looks to the side, a path that would lead them out of the gym compounds. the path's decorated in green, flowers blooming, trees providing shade, it looks nice, peaceful. he gestures for them to start walking.
"nyx," he calls for her attention before asking a question that's been on his mind. "why are you here?" he asks. some were asked to come, some were forced, he was curious as to which option applied to her. "in sinnoh, working for rocket. would you not rather be back home?" he continues.

Yet many a man is making friends with death even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
naomi's about to ask lucas how old he thinks she is, but she'd hate to prove him wrong, so she lets the topic pass before it troubles her more. he can always have some kind of shock later, she supposes, feeling a little lighter inside, for some odd reason. but then she thinks of lucas, and how his partner before had died, and she turns worried, wondering how he's handled the sudden change in scenery. it should be a good thing, but sometimes, with some, it isn't.
she wants to speak up, but lucas is good at keeping the conversation focused on her. and besides, they start moving and so, being naturally introverted, the change in scenery distracts her. she doesn't exactly give her full attention to the conversation, finding herself overwhelming with pretty grass and butterflies, until she's called to attention. she turns to lucas, a small frown returning to her face.
"well, i'm in sinnoh because i work for rocket," she responds, stubbornly, despite getting what he means. she sighs. "kanto never really was a home for me," she admits. "wherever rocket is, that'll be home." she thinks back to reid, to their conversation in misty falls, and saying it out loud makes her feel a lot better about leaving things behind back in saffron.
she's lucas's partner, she reminds herself, and she realizes she should be giving more attention to him beyond missions and the occasional run in at the rocket base. "and you? lucas..." she doesn't want to resurface inside him memories he'd rather not have, not yet, at least. "why are you here?" but she phrases her question a little differently. "why do you work for team rocket?"
it's not a test of loyalty, but coming from naomi, it could possibly sound like one.
Post by LUCAS BLACKBURN on Aug 19, 2016 15:27:06 GMT
her response isn't a direct answer to his but rather a cop-out of sorts, but he understands her answer quite well. it applies to him as well, where rocket goes he goes, or rather, where rocket wants him he goes. he's not had much of a say in what he does in his life. it wasn't even his choice to come over to sinnoh. "i understand," he comments, and the topic moves on.
he perks up at the mention of his name, fingers hovering over flowers on top of a shrub. a "hmm?" would give him enough time to think of a response to her question. he's not here by choice and he was sure naomi could have guessed that. but still he finds her questions to be quite stern.
was this a test?
"i'm here because they wanted me here," he replies. he decides to leave out the reason of why they asked forced him over. you need to prove yourself. her final question stumps him, finding it hard to come up with a decent response. so he tells the truth.
"rocket's what i was raised to be," he plucks a flower, twirling its stem between his fingers before letting go. "i don't think i'd fit in anywhere else," he laughs, because he doesn't even fit in well in rocket. many reasons caused him to stick out from the others. "but it's not a bad life. i wouldn't mind doing it for the rest of my life," he adds. it beats the alternative of being a beggar on the street.

lucas's responses are straight forward, like hers, and as hypocritical as it is, she can't help but find herself unpersuaded by them. lucas's old partner died, and to be truthful, naomi hadn't exactly been treating him like a great friend. probably because she had her own issues at the time with reid, but now that she had had some closure, she feels the desperate need to help him. only lucas looks plenty happy-- yet naomi's skepticism makes her attempt to see through that happy, for the better or worse.
his answer is...concerning, especially the way he tears the flower and watches it fall. it seems like he has no home but rocket, and while that makes naomi undoubtedly happy to have her little family of sorts be the ones to take him in, it also makes her wonder if he doesn't regret his decision. she waits for him to finish speaking, and then, at his question, she makes an amused face. "what test?" she asks, flatly, eyes raised. but she doesn't refute his claim, nor deny it. it's more fun that way.
"lucas...your partner passed away, and yet, you're jumping at every chance to improve yourself, and you flew to the end of the earth for us..." maybe a normal person's sentence would have ended in conern, in worry, in a suggestion that he find some help. but all naomi could feel was a swelling sensation of... "you're an incredible member." ...pride.
"since we're partners--"a fact that i've been glossing over for about a year, said a reproachful voice inside her. "my name's naomi. it's good to be working with you."
"also, don't destroy those flowers, please. you don't know how long it takes to watch them grow." she grabs his hand before he can pluck another one, and then wordlessly lets it go.

his mood dampens with the mention of his old partner, bring back memories he'd rather not think about right now, not again. but as he listens on his mood changes once again, now morphing into pure joy and fluff. he hides his smile by turning away from her, a chuckle leaving his lips. he doesn't know how to react, he's never been complimented like this, not from a colleague, not from someone he barely knows.
he's filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and accomplishment, like his efforts have been worth something. he turns back, smile never fading. "thank you, really, it means the world," he smiles harder, if that was even possible. his day has been made, nothing was going to top this.
or so he thought. nyx now reveals her name, her real name to be naomi. "it's good to be working with you too, naomi," he says her name, still a bit weird to say. he laughs when she grabs his hand. "sorry, sorry," he apologizes out of instinct. he wipes his hand against the fabric of his pants.
he turns to face her. "partners," he repeats. too much attention's been focused on him, so he shifts it back. "but really, don't worry about me. i'm fine, always have been," he affirms with a smile, last part carrying hints of a lie. "you on the other hand," he speaks up, tone changing, now a bit more serious, "if you ever need someone to talk to." he'll let he assume the rest.

watching lucas's reaction steadily shift from thoughtful, to lighthearted to downright happy fills naomi with happiness that she managed to say the right thing. lucas chuckles when she reproaches him, but he relents and wipes his hand on his pants. "just don't do it again," she says, a little sternly, but then she smiles brightly. "i like sunflowers," she admits, leaning closer into the garden as if to smell the flowers. "but you know, any kind is good."
she looks at lucas. within seconds it's gotten easier to talk to him, and she's mostly glad she's made the step. the boy looks like he owes a lot, or at least, thinks of highly of team rocket. a flash of concern sweeps over her as he seems to hide his feelings yet again and the constricted look remains even as he shifts the spotlight to her. "i won't push further," naomi assures him, deciding to let the questions she has pass. she knows how difficult certain emotions can be, and she's fine if lucas doesn't want to share. secrets are necessary.
she smiles at his invitation to talk. "...you'll be there," she completes, nodding. and she's about to open her mouth to speak, but then her phone buzzes. she's about to say something, but then instantaneously she hears lucas's phone buzz too. her hand goes to her summer coat's pocket, but she makes eye contact with lucas first and nods.
it's an emergency, no further speaking is needed. she begins to briskly head out of the garden.
Post by LUCAS BLACKBURN on Aug 20, 2016 16:24:35 GMT
he's glad at the leaps the two has made with their relationship today. it's nice to have someone to talk to, someone to rely on, a feeling he truly misses. her phone buzzes just in time to interrupt their conversation. he looks away only and only when his phone buzzes too would he look back at her. it was too much of a coincidence to be anything other than a mission. he returns her nod with one of his before pulling out his phone.
he makes a move to the exit, walk turns into a jog. emergency was the word they used. naomi by now should be used to his work ethics so hopefully she would not mind the pace of which he was jogging at. teammates need help, a battle going on at the outskirts of town apparently between rocket and galactic. the two would arrive not long after that, only about fifteen minutes after the text.
he's panting, the jog further than expected but he leans behind a tree. he peers around to see a pokemon battle raging in the forest, on one side rocket and on the other galactic, judging by their uniforms. he breathes, looks over to naomi before giving her a nod, whatever that might mean she'll find out soon enough.
he sidesteps around the tree and charges straight for one of the galactic members without one bit of care about the arbok that stood near him. take out the trainer, ignore the pokemon. he tackles the galactic to the ground and follows it up by quick punches to the face. he's reckless, ruthless, but he has no fear.

naomi jogs with him, keeping her pace slower than his. out of experience she's found a suitable pace that works for her, and though she doesn't let lucas get too far without rushing to catch up, she's not too expectant on them being in synch. lucas darts a head of her, and when she's at the point of interest he's already tired and leaning against a tree. she slaps a hand down on his shoulder. "tired already?" she asks, and then instantly regrets asking it.
lucas nods at her, and then tosses himself into the fray. naomi gasps, and then shouts, "lucas, no!" but the kid's rushed ahead of himself, and he's slamming down against a galactic. the galactic crashes, but his pokemon are out, and the arbok wastes no time in helping his trainer. it hisses once in warning, and then bites down on lucas's calf.
naomi jumps out of her hiding spot, mycah already at her side. the luxray tackles the arbok off lucas, or at least attempts to, and naomi doesn't spare lucas another look, already so pissed off she doesn't know why she called mycah into the fray. she ignores the two on the floor and goes instead for the next galactic member, who has already raised his arm in surrender when her elbow crashes against his jaw.
the man almost falls to his feet, stumbling backwards as he looks at naomi. "wrong organization, wrong place, wrong time" she says, mercilessly. she whistles to get mycah's attention, and the luxray drops what it's doing, and runs to tackle the man....
Post by LUCAS BLACKBURN on Aug 20, 2016 18:50:38 GMT
the man fights back, throwing back a punch which lands against his jaw. he grits his teeth, pain not affecting him before throwing out another punch. he doesn't see the snake coming even though he should've, the bite from the snake landing perfectly on his calf. he grunts in pain, leg shakes to try and get the snake off but luckily a luxray would help.
he feels no numbing, no weird sensations which means no venom. he sighs in relief. a punch catches him off guard, knocks him off of the man and dazes him enough that another punch would put him on his back. he shakes it off, jaw clenches. he avoids a punch and quickly turns it around, using the man's momentum against him. he throws a punch to his gut before pushing the man off of him, now scrambling back onto his feet.
he doesn't notice naomi's battle but he assumes she could handle it on her own. he stands on one leg, his left leg limping under the bite. "come on," he taunts. the man falls for it, lunging forward only to have his entire body flung around headed straight for a tree. it knocks him out, the man now out cold. he looks back to naomi and sees her opposition who manages to dodge the luxray.
"nyx--" he calls out. from the man's belt came another pokemon, a rhyhorn that charges straight for her luxray. this left the man defenseless. he charges straight for him, lunging, tackling him onto the ground. naomi has a rhyhorn to control, and he a human. a punch, another, they wrestle on the ground.

mycah is successful in getting the arbok off lucas’s leg, and yet it can hardly get it off him before lucas is up on his feet again. either way naomi calls him for another task, and the luxray is quick to switch targets, attempting to slam into the man but being dodged instead, which came as a surprise to naomi, but she was ready to go in for the knock out herself, when sudden a white light flashed--
at the same time, lucas charged up to the man from the side, tackling him to the ground, naomi took two steps back, in an attempt to avoid what she knew was going to be a STOMP attack. mycah stepped in and found himself the object of the attack instead. naomi gritted her teeth, attention divided between lucas on the ground and the luxray's battle with the rhyhorn. "get it out of here." the luxray glowed a dark, brilliant red, and the rhyhorn's eyes started to glow the same color-- it's power became magnified, but at the same time...
the pokemon began running off in the opposite direction, before making a pained roar after crashing into a tee. naomi, left to deal with lucas an his enemy feels thoroughly perplexed at her partner's madness. "lucas, get of--" but she has a good feeling that that won't work. "get the other one," she orders mycah, who disappears into the bushes.
within seconds, the luxray comes back, a bit slower, given that this time a galactic's head is being carefully pulled inside its jaws. naomi's voice booms. "you! and you, lucas. separate. now."
she's turn her attention to the galactic member (she'd have enough time for lucas later). "leave here. and don't even think of obstructing team rocket's path again. collect your pokemon and leave without fuss or your friend meets his end."
the arbok hisses in the background, but is unwilling to risk its trainers life...
Post by LUCAS BLACKBURN on Aug 22, 2016 10:23:57 GMT
the two wrestle on the ground for what seems like forever, trading blow for blow but not once did they trade positions. the rocket's always on top, always on the attack and he's relentless with his assault. he doesn't even hear naomi, knuckles start to bruise, starts to bloody. it wasn't until the appearance of the luxray would the rocket stop his assaults, punch stopping midway as he releases a sigh.
he calms himself down, pushes himself off the galactic but he feels his leg start to give. the bite on his calf doing more than it should have. he limps on it, uses his other leg to support most of his leg as the other bends. he limps over to a tree and leans against it, breathing slowing as he dusted at his knuckles, rubs them to alleviate the pain. his lip's cut, a quick rub with the back of his hand would wipe away some blood.
he prepares himself for a scolding, eyes watches naomi handle the other galactic. even though he's in pain he truly enjoys this, likes getting physical. it's what he was trained for, to be hotheaded, to be ruthless. "you didn't have to do that," he speaks up, calling for naomi's attention. he's happy that she has his back but not so happy that she stopped him. "i had it under control," he adds.
