Just a couple minutes early for the appointment Dakota had set up with the gym leader, Gardenia, Dakota showed up ready to go. After a brief greeting between them, they both brought out their initial pokemon. For the challenger it was Amy, his Eevee, and the leader sent out his Cherubi. While he had Amy use charm, the opponent used growth. Next was a quick attack that struck the cherry pokemon dead on, and then Amy was planted with leech seed. Despite knowing it wouldn’t do anything, Dakota had Eevee use refresh. The grass knot attack that Cherubi executed afterwards didn’t do very much damage because of how small Amy was. Then Dakota hit the opponent hard with a last resort attack, which almost knocked Cherubi out cold. The gym leader used safeguard next, but it did nothing to stop the quick attack that Amy charged into directly after.
Next Turtwig came out, and immediately Dakota had Amy use last resort again. It did a lot of health, and the opponent followed it up with a withdraw to lessen future blows. Again he told Amy to attack with last resort, despite being able to see that the Eevee was being weakened by the lingering leech seed. With Turtwig at less than half health, the razor leaf it shot off did extra damage and knocked out his Eevee. Next Dakota sent out Knuckles, and immediately commanded his Treecko to use giga drain. It connected before the opponent used reflect, which the journalist knew wouldn’t do anything to the special-based attack. Even though it wasn’t very effected, just one more giga drain was enough to make Turtwig fall unconscious, after how much damage the Eevee had done.
The last pokemon, Roserade, came out and Dakota couldn’t help but grin in excitement. He had this, he was sure of it. He had knuckles use screech, and he wasn’t too concerned when Treecko was damaged and poisoned by poison sting afterwards. Next he had Knuckles use leech seed to slowly drain health, and he wasn’t concerned when a not very effective magical leaf hit his grass type. Right after he had Treecko use sunny day, his pokemon was hit by a stun spore and paralyzed. That was fine, it was time to switch out anyway. Bringing Knuckles back to his pokeball, he instead sent out his newly evolved Tails. He called for a flame charge, which did a lot of damage with sunny day powering up the attack. The poison sting did damage after that, but didn’t poison his Rapidash. With a flare blitz, Dakota ended the battle in a glorious fire move.
