it's quick and subtle; his grip around her hand suddenly tightens, his eyes widen, his demeanor drops for a split second. he's quick to regain his composure, though judging by how close the two are and how aware she seems to be he assumes she'd take notice. he lets out a soft chuckle and a smile of defeat as he looks away for a second. cold eyes stare at the wooden floor of the boat as he formulates his thoughts and tries to control his emotions.
"she's dead." his response is soft and quick, but it isn't all true. just a few days ago during the blackout he encountered a ranger who he just couldn't seem to shake. the incident's been on his mind ever since and it's eating away at him. is she alive? that can't be her. she's dead. it's an endless cycle with no way to stop it. he blinks a few times to bring himself back to reality.
not once does he move away from her nor let go of his grip around her hand. she already knows too much and yet he knows little to nothing. so he pushes on. "i'm curious though," he speaks up. he feels sick, his stomach turns when he lets go of her hand and places a finger on the underside of her chin. he pushes upwards gently, tilts her head up as he speaks. "do you really want me? or is this just a game?" he closes the distance between them again, his face hovers in front of hers with a small grin on his face.

Dead he said. She'd notice the grip of her hand change and how his eyes would widen at her words, affirming that she was right in her assumption. It was rather satisfying to say the least though he'd recover all the same. The look in his eye and his expression told her exactly what she needed to know. He was losing it. Whoever that person was, it was a touchy subject. A button that would bring out the truth if she chose to press it. The verbal response he gave on did not change how Elizabeth felt in the slightest. "Oh how sad," she'd murmur as if regretful. The proper thing to do here was feign sympathy, however dark pasts were like the root of who members of team rocket were. It would have been stranger not to find someone in team rocket that didn't have a tragic experience with death.
It didn't take long for her to figure out that the man became lost in his own thoughts. This girlfriend of his was probably part of the reason his reputation in the rockets was so shitty now. The disgrace, as he was named. Of course Elizabeth couldn't have cared less and wondered why he even stuck around with the team in general. Regardless of the reason, the blonde wouldn't once break eye contact. Her aqua eyes locked onto Lucas and even when he freed her hand to stroke her chin, she would laugh gingerly. "If I wasn't interested then I wouldn't be on this boat would I?" A truth. This was their day off and not once would she have flirted with anyone that she had no interest in, not that this was going to get anywhere anytime soon.
He was getting dangerously close, her heart beating slightly quicker at his movement, but it was obvious that the death of this girlfriend had plagued him. The baggage would mean that this entire front he was putting up was a facade. That he wouldn't actually do anything much less indulging in any truly risqué. For now Elizabeth decided to entertain his attempts if only to see how far he was willing to go, how far he was going to commit to this act. "I think you're the one playing the game here. Pretending you're something you aren't," she'd flick her eyelashes as she moved her hand from his hair down to his back, grazing him lightly with the pressure from her fingertips. The truth was that she wouldn't have minded if he kissed her with how much he was hinting at it, however she knew the likelihood of that was close to zero and she might as well have called him out on it. "Or am I wrong?" This was her win, a coy smile flashing as if challenging him to prove her wrong here. Either way was a win for her.

it's all too clear that he's going to lose this battle, or whatever this is. he wills himself not to flinch when she runs a hand through his hair then onto his back. her touch feels unnatural to him, the sinking feeling in his stomach growing with every passing second. his heart quickens, he's too close, it feels wrong, so very wrong. but he's stubborn, and he's determined to see this act through to the end.
"am i?" he asks. he can feel the warmth in her breath graze the surface of his skin. the idea of just kissing her comes to mind but he immediately dismisses it. he's not going to do that, not now, not ever. there's a line that he will not cross. he doesn't even notice where the boat is or how far they've traveled, his attention is solely fixed on her. he fears that if he even looks away that might signify his loss, so he keeps staring.
"you're not wrong." he tilts his head to the side, his eyes drops from her eyes down to her nose and mouth. "i don't think you'd like the real me very much," he comments. "are you pretending as well?" he asks. he lets a finger reach up to brush loose strands of hair to the side of her face. again, he feels sick. "if you aren't..." he lowers his hand but maintains his gaze. "prove it."

He kept going and Elizabeth would relish in this. Just as he was able to feel her breath, she felt his lingering on her skin. To her it felt more comforting than it was awkward. As Lucas did not back away, neither would she as he questions her statement. There was a brief pause and the tension would build. These sensations were all too familiar to the blonde woman, her senses honing in on how her target was reacting. The eye contact would not break on her account and she'd experiencing his attempts at making her submit. It was cute.
But he didn't do it. Failing to commit to that small act of affection that might have solidified whatever facade he was trying to uphold. That baggage must have been heavy for he would admit that she was not wrong. Which was another way for someone to say that she was right but not wanting to admit it. His little comment would raise some questions. 'i don't think you'd like the real me very much' he said. She'd chuckle at it due to how close that hit to home so much that she could relate. "Touche," she'd quip softly but not aiming to expand on that any further. Then the challenge was reversed and presented into her lap like some gift basket. That coy smile would expand as she withdrew her hand from its position on his back.
"You think I won't?" she asked curiously before bringing her hand up to his shoulder to push him down on his back. If he wanted her to prove something then so be it. From there she'd lean over him coquettishly and reduced the distance between their lips, reestablishing eye contact as she'd allow her body to press against his. After all she had seen, she could surmise that he didn't want this. Why he kept playing this game, she would not know. "Last chance," she'd warn as if she was offering some kindness from giving him the choice to stop. She was obscenely close that even a sudden bump in the water might have accidentally caused their lips to touch.

too close.
he feels his stomach turn and his heart quicken. he maintains his gaze for as long as he could but in the end, when presented with an opportunity to escape, he takes it. he gives up, admits defeat. slowly he separates the distance between them, face turning to the side to avoid looking at her and more importantly to stop any ideas she might have. it doesn't take long until there's a respectable gap between them. he shifts away from her, shrugs off her grip and leans back in the seat.
"you win."
he's not a sore loser but he can't help but feel a bit annoyed at how the events transpired, and how easy it was for him to just give up. but he couldn't help himself, not when she's suddenly back in his life, or at least there's a possibility for her to be. he's still not sure if that was even her that night, but he keeps his hopes up. he'll look for her, and he'll find her, he's certain of it. but for now there's still the glaring issue of the other rocket who he's stuck on the boat with.

He gave up, forcing her off and looking away as bashful as could be. That was to be expected but remained a disappointment all the same. His words would serve to acknowledge her victory as she allowed him to move back to a normal seating position. She'd recline backwards, "awww." Twas a shame the he could not commit. His tone indicated that he was displeased with what transpired. Truly it was annoying and she wanted to dunk his head into the ocean for how wishy washy he was. Conversely her expression did not show this thought and instead a pout would form on her lips. "Do you hate me that much? I already told you this isn't a game for me."
In some ways the baggage might have been endearing. He was committed to a dead woman and couldn't move on, or at least that was what Elizabeth envisioned was the case here. If that was her, she would have been impressed, but she knew for a fact that in this line of work there was no room for failure. Her own ambitions might have made her a hypocrite however the blonde knew her place. "Let me make things clear. I am into you but I can see that you need to resolve whatever issues you have." He asked for comments and she wouldn't divulge everything she had known, yet there was some self obligation to call him out. In the future she had no desire to be any part of failure due to whatever baggage that Lucas had if she so happened to work with him. It was still unknown whether he had known her allegiance and she'd give him the hint if he didn't. "People still expect things from you and I doubt they'll be so generous as to give you a third chance."
