Oliver had just been passing through Canalave City when he saw a flyer about a local orphanage needing volunteers for park trips, as only a few of the younger kids were allowed with each chaperone and they could always use more people so more could go out to play at once. So he signed up and hung around until the weekend when the event was, giving them enough time to run a background check and make sure he was suitable to have around the children. Of course, the ex-cop passed it with flying colors and he stopped by to pick up the four kids that were assigned to him. From what they told him, there were only a couple other volunteers for that day. It was a bit disappointing to hear, but knowing that volunteers were hard to find was the main reason he did it so often, pretty much everywhere he passed through as well. Back in Jubilife, he was known quite well for that in addition to having been head detective for a few years.
Knowing that there were grills in the park they’d be attending, Oliver even brought hot dogs and hamburgers for the kids, as well as a large container of Kool-Aid, paper plates and napkins and cups, and a few family size bags of chips. He didn’t bring just enough for the ones he’d be watching, but the rest of the orphans that would be out there that day as well with the other volunteers. The blonde didn’t mind spending his own money at all, figuring it’d be more fun for them if it was turned into a picnic as well. Besides, he figured it might be a nice break from their normal meals. That would all be for a little later, however, the supplies left in his car for the time being. There was a first aid kit in there too, of course, as he knew far too well by now that children had a tendency to get hurt. For now he sat on a bench near the edge of the playground, keeping a watchful eye on the children he was tasked with taking care of for the day.
It had been a very long time since his own daughter had been as young as the boys and girls he was watching, but a soft smile pulled at his lips as he recalled those days. It seemed so much harder then, as it wasn’t too long after he had lost his wife and he had been left alone with Lisanna. Shaking those thoughts out of his head, he glanced around for a moment to see if he could spot any of the other volunteers yet. It was just before midday on a Saturday, and there were children than just the orphans playing about.
