Honestly, Dakota was excited. Every year, his paper did an annual report on the gyms throughout Sinnoh, covering their strengths and weaknesses to help out trainers wanting to challenge them. This time, he was chosen to do the coverage. While just watching trainers challenge gym was usually good enough to write the articles, the strawberry blonde was determined to take them all on himself. He had no idea if he was skilled enough to do it all, but he sure as hell wanted to try. In his excitement, he even showed up about ten minutes early for the appointment he had made to battle with the Oreburgh Gym Leader, preferring to set it up ahead of time rather than just pop in and the guy maybe not being there.
After sharing a brief greeting with Roark, their battle began. Since the leader only had three pokemon, Dakota stuck with the same instead of using his full party. Knuckles, Amy, and Sonic were his chosen three, trying to go with the biggest type advantages he had. While Amy wouldn’t do to well as a normal type, he hoped she could still be of some use. Knowing the gym leader’s lineup from his own research, he sent out Knuckles first to battle against the Geodude. With the grass type being able to do four times as much damage against a rock and ground dual type, he was confident that Knuckles would be doing some serious damage.
“Knuckles, leech seed first,” Dakota called out, and the Treecko obediently covered the Geodude with seeds that would leech health over time. A sizeable amount, too, with it doing extra damage. As Roark had the Geodude use stealth rock, and he couldn’t help but be glad that the grass type was the first he sent out, or else that would have done some serious damage. Letting the leech seed do a bit more work, he bumped up Knuckle’s speed with an agility and the gym leader used rock head to prevent Geodude from taking recoil damage. After that, Dakota used another agility to make sure that Treecko was even faster, though he wasn’t too concerned about any rock types being quicker than any of his pokemon. It was just to be sure, really. After that Treecko was hit by a rock throw, though it did little damage and Knuckles was healed afterwards slightly by the leech seed.
With a giga drain, Geodude was knocked out cold after it took a couple ticks of damage from leech seed already. It put Treecko back up at full health too, and he was already amped up with the speed boosts still very much active. Deploying the same strategy, he commanded Knuckles to start with a leech seed again so it could do some damage. The Treecko was hit with a screech after that, and Dakota responded with a third agility, to give Treecko the fastest speed possible at the moment. Again Knuckles was hit by another screech, and the Treecko flinched at the loud sound. It was starting to worry him a bit, with how much his buddy’s defense was lowering. “Try to finish him off with a giga drain,” he called out, and while Knuckles did hit with the glowing green attack, it wasn’t enough to knock the Onyx, who had more health, out.
A rock throw hit Knuckles after that, and while it wasn’t very effective normally, it did a fair amount of damage after his pokemon’s defense was lowered so much. He quickly finished off the Onyx with one last giga drain, but it didn’t heal for much since the opponent hadn’t much health left to steal away. Out came Cranidos, the last of the gym leader’s pokemon, and since he knew Knuckles had been hurt quite a bit, he had the Treecko use endeavor to put the opponent down at the same amount of health as himself. And then right after that, a well-aimed headbutt made Treecko fall unconscious. Immediate he returned the Treecko to his pokeball, tossing out Sonic to take his place. Stealth rock was still in effect, and it did about a quarter of the Sandshrew’s health right off the bat.
“Use rapid spin, get those damn rocks out of there,” Dakota commanded, and Sonic was quick to oblige. With a swift spin, the rocks were scattered and rendered useless and he also hit the opponent to do a little damage, though it wasn’t very effective. Sonic’s defense was lowered with a leer after that, and the journalist was quick to follow it up with a fury cutter, it being the only attack he could use that at least did normal damage. The rest wouldn’t be very effective- it was unfortunate, that Sandshrew didn’t know any ground type moves. Soon Sonic was hit by a headbutt and left on his last legs, so Dakota called out a command for another quick fury cutter to end the battle, as he could tell that Cranidos was almost done as well. But Sandshrew managed to miss, and then was knocked out by a pursuit attack.
Cursing quietly, Dakota grabbed his last pokeball and sent out Amy, his newly acquired Eevee being his only hope. “He’s almost done, Amy! End it with a quick attack, before he can do anything,” he commanded, and Amy rushed off to follow his order. She quickly dashed forward and slammed into the Cranidos. Even though the attack wasn’t very effective, it was enough to knock out the last of Roark’s pokemon. With a cheer, he ran out to pick up Amy in excitement, squeezing her close to his chest for a moment as he pet her.
