But something about this kid was interesting, every little detail had something in Parker yearning for more. It'd been awhile since he'd met someone so...sincere. He was used to druggies and rich white kids with money to spare who didn't bat an eyelash at price tags. He took stock of where he was and what he was doing for a moment, sure he was dreaming as Maverick smiled at him.
"You know, after I got Egg I didn't know that I had to like....feed her and shit so you're doing better than me."
Parker actually laughed at his admittance, something he'd never really tell anyone.
Okay but for real...what the hell was a skiddo? He voiced his thoughts without really thinking about it.
"What the actual fuck is a skiddo? It doesn't sound pleasant."
The tips of his ears turned red and he hunched his shoulders when he realized what he'd said. He wasn't the best when it came to recognizing pokemon, and he barely knew what his own were.
"Whatever it is, you can ride it? Is it big?"
He was rather curious now, and sat up more in his chair as his expression turned puzzled. Was it like a giant horse or something?
"yes, well, feeding is very important. myr and i probably share five stomachs between the two of us honestly." which reminds him of just how hungry he is. he can't even remember what he ordered so he doesn't know what to look out for as their waiter darts around. he sips at his water instead, knowing full well it's most definitely not going to fill the gnawing in his stomach. talking is nice though, because at least that's helping him keep his mind off things.
"she is quite pleasant, thank you very much," he says through another laugh. "i'm not surprised you haven't seen one though. she's the only one i've seen since i left solaceon." he knows what it's like to have big gaps in pokemon species. he's still not entirely sure what his tynamo is (which is part of the reason he hasn't been training it at all).
"she's like, uh, three feet, i guess? so she comes up to here on me." he holds a hand at about chest high to demonstrate. "she's a little small for her size so i don't, like, travel on her or anything. but yeah, you can ride her. she's pretty fast when you get her going." he taps his chin, clicks his tongue decisively. "okay. after we eat, that's how i'll repay you. i'll let ya ride myr."

He laughed and nodded, feeding was absolutely important. He decided to keep the resulting drug deal and murders to himself though, that Maverick didn't need to know. The kid looked like he couldn't hold a knife or shoot a gun, so there was no need to scare him. Plus if what he was saying was anything to go by, he was no city boy either. Sounded like he grew up on a damn farm, and Parker smiled at the thought.
He'd never met a country boy before, and the accent was pretty cute too.
"Listen I barely know what my pokemon are so don't make fun. I'm not really versed in pokemon or anything, there weren't an abundance of them in Castelia. Mostly as pets there, but I know the city ones. Aipom is a big one, they're like rattata. Just everywhere. Trubbish too, that's a big one. See a lot of Furfrou too. Mundane pokemon like that."
He shrugged, and balked at Mav mentioning riding the skiddo thing.
"Uhm...what?"
He smiled nervously, sure he wasn't as tall as Maverick, but he didn't know if he'd be able to ride the skiddo. As luck would have it, the waiter scampered back with their food just in time, and also replaced their drinks. Whereas Parker was previously enamoured with the waiter, he hardly spared him a glance now as he focused on Maverick and his weird pokemon.
"Dude aren't I too big to ride what is essentially sounding like a pony?"
"there were a lot on the routes near my town, and battling was kinda a big deal, i guess. i never really had the time though. lune was the first pokemon i actually caught. and that was just a few years ago so..." good, of course he should be prattling off a list of all the reasons why he probably shouldn't be a trainer. he stops before he can get ahead of himself, pushes away the thoughts for now so he can focus on the nice time he's having now. and really, he is having a nice time. despite how awful things would have turned out should they have gone the wrong way, he's actually kind of glad his pokemon were stolen. glad that this happened because of it at least.
he looks down briefly at his plate. the sandwich is chock full of different kinds of meats and veggies and while he's not quite sure what he's putting in his mouth when he picks it up, he finds himself really enjoying whatever it is when he starts to chew. "mnf thfis isf good," he mumbles through a mouthful of food. he snorts at the remark and shakes his head, swallows quickly so he can bite out, "she's a goat pokemon. and trust me, if she can carry me no problem, she can certainly carry you." he's taken note (for whatever reason) of just how much shorter parker is than him. "honestly, you'll probably just be more comfortable for her than i am. she's too small to carry us both so i'll walk you through some things, but don't worry. i used to teach kids back at the ranch all the time." he cringes when he realizes just how small town he sounds and decides to quiet down for a moment by taking another bite from his sandwich.

Parker could feel the slight turn in the conversation, and wanted to twist it back around. Parker liked to think of himself as rather observant, and noticed the way that Maverick faltered for a moment. Surely he didn't think something dumb like he wasn't a good trainer or something right? But that seemed to be the case, at least for a moment, and Parker poked at his pasta before taking a bite.
"Listen you sound like a great trainer so stop beating yourself up okay?"
His lips twitched when Maverick finally took a bite, and outright laughed when he talked with his mouth full. Of course the place was good, Parker used his money wisely on good food now that he could afford it.
"Of course it is. Listen I used to eat out of trash cans I don't spend my money on anything less than the best now. Then again anything tastes better than that."
Why was he talking about himself so much? He was slightly confused as he trailed off, and bit his lip slightly at the sudden outpour of information. Stuffing his face with pasta he chewed slowly and made a face at Mav, slightly suspicious. He swallowed and twirled his fork around his spaghetti, staring at Maverick critically.
"I guess....I trust you on this. We'll see I guess. Also, please tell me you lived on like, a farm or something. This is all just too cute."
"oh, please. you wouldn't be saying that if--nevermind." he lets it go only because he can feel lune staring up at him. the squirtle taps its pokeball wordlessly and returns itself and maverick frowns. he rips another chunk out from his sandwich, comes out from his thoughts when he hears parker speak again. wait, did he say trash cans?
"dang, that's--man, i'm sorry. nobody deserves that." even if he's gone a little hungry on the road before, he's still managed to scrounge around for enough food to eat. cheap cans of beans and fruit preserves aren't exactly the most delicious things in the world, but suddenly they sound gourmet compared to what parker's had. sympathy turns to gratefulness when he remembers that the other trainer is paying for his food.
he raises the sandwich back up when parker calls him cute. words of denial, of, 'hey, man, i don't swing that way,' rest on the tip of his tongue, but he can't find the will to say anything when he knows anything that comes out of his mouth is going to be a bumbling mess of word vomit. "n-not a farm. a, well, an erm, a ranch. we had about sixty skiddo and gogoat."
eager for a topic change, he asks, "what about you?"

Parker waves off any concern that Maverick seems to have with a wave of his hand. He's come a long way from the kid he used to be, homeless and afraid of the world around him. He got a crew and made a name for himself, and now here he was years later with a cushy little nest egg of money in the bank, and even more hidden around his house.
"Told you. Street rat."
Was all he said with a shrug. He leaned forward and grinned, the kid lived on a ranch? He'd never seen a ranch except on television so it was interesting to say the least. When asked about himself though the smile wavered, but he leaned back anyway and shrugged nonchalantly.
"Lived on the streets of Castelia when I was about .....oh 13? Got kicked out by my mom. She wasn't uh....the best. Just kinda....lived from there though. Stayed alive. Eventually got a steady job and now I'm here."
it's just brushing the surface of the story, maverick knows that. and he eyes parker for a moment, tries to see through his eyes what that must have been like, what it could have felt like. he can empathize, though. for the longest time he always thought his mother hadn't loved him. how could she have loved him, if she'd been so okay with leaving him with his father? he reaches out a hand as some comfort or something, but changes his mind halfway through, instead jerks it back so he can pick up his drink again.
"i get that. i mean, not all of it obviously, but i get it." he picks up his sandwich again, stares down at it as he thinks. then he looks up through his bangs and hums in the back of his throat. "have you ever thought about traveling? leaving jubilife, i mean? it's really--there are a lot of things to see out there, you know?" he grins then, shrugs his shoulders. "although you definitely don't get food like this."

He didn't feel like telling Maverick that he didn't get it. Not at all. He didn't get the crippling fear and the painful nights spent with makeshift binders. The attempted rapes. The violence and how it felt to have split knuckles and blood on your face. He zoned out for a moment in his memories and shook himself, taking in a sharp breath as he dizzily glanced down at Pudding, who was tugging on his sleeve.
He handed the pokemon his garlic bread and watched as Pudding munched on the food item before turning back to Mav, something a bit...vulnerable in his eyes. He looked tired suddenly, and ran a hand down his face.
"Oh I bet you do kid."
He was sincere in that statement, he looked very empathetic and just...nice.
Parker found himself wishing he could be the kind of person that Maverick was.
He focused instead on the next part of the conversation, on the part where Mav seemed to be reaching for him, but stopped. His gaze flickered to Mav's face in confusion for a moment. Well, whatever moment they were sharing there was gone now.
"Uhm...traveling? I mean like.....yeah kinda? I've considered doing the whole badge thing for like a minute but..I don't know. Don't know if it's for me honestly. I feel like I'd miss the city too much you know? It's shitty but it's home, I don't know how to traverse the wild."
normally, he feels like this. he feels like he's a million miles away from people. it's hard to connect. it's hard to have a real conversation, one that's not passersby chatter, the hello, how are you? i'm well, and you? it's just because of circumstance and because of the fact that he wouldn't let parker walk away after what he did for him, he knows that, but for a moment he lets himself believe that maybe he's getting a little closer. after all these years, he'd forgotten what that felt like. and now that he's had a taste of it, he yearns for it.
but as quickly as he recognizes the connection, it's gone, gone with the faraway look in the backs of parker's eyes. he knows that look. his mother used to get that look before she locked herself in her room and wouldn't come out until well after the sun set. he swallows, doesn't know parker well enough to bring him back to the here and now. he's not sure what he's doing. not when he sits there watching him and not when he decides to speak again.
"oh, it's not so bad. you get used to roughing it out. it's just, it's easier to travel with someone, i think? less dangerous, actually. i'm alone so i have to have either myr or lune out at my side at all times just in case, but...you know, it wouldn't--it wouldn't be so bad, with someone else." he shakes his head, chides himself for even suggesting it when he knows he'll get turned down. people don't just uproot their entire lives for strangers. "i'm just sayin' i know how to take care of myself out there. and it'd be fun to do that with someone else. but regardless, you should do that. challenge the gyms. i think you'd be great."

Parker's eyes widened. He was surprised to say the least. The kid was basically offering him the opportunity of a lifetime. No one had ever really wanted to go on some random adventure with him.
He considered it for a moment, he really did.
But....he hesitated.
"Maverick. I.....I want to. I have a few things to take care of right now though."
Missions for Galactic, figuring out where to go in his life, all those sorts of things. He couldn't uproot right now, that was for sure, but he wanted to. Something about this kid made him believe in himself in a weird way.
"Hey can I uh....rain check you on it though? Maybe? We could uhm, trade numbers and text each other."
he knows he looks too damn hopeful. why he should even be hopeful is beyond him. obviously parker's going to say no. as much as mav tries to put it into pretty words, being a trainer kind of sucks. little money, shitty food, living off whatever nature has to offer you. thunderstorm? too bad, rough it out. run out of water? sucks until you find a river or a stream. taking care and feeding an entire team isn't even something mav has had to deal with yet, and parker has baby pokemon.
these are all the reasons he comes up with in his head when parker says no. because that's what he's saying, even if he isn't phrasing it like that. mav dips his head, cheery smile stretching over his lips. "y-yeah, sure. whatever." he tugs his phone out of his pocket and slides it on the table over to parker. "and thanks for the food. really, it was delicious. and i know you don't want to hear it, but thanks again. for getting my pokemon back."
