major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
Only partially traumatized from the week's events, Lena finds herself relieved to be in the field, away from the noise. The field is a bustling town, but that doesn't matter. She's away from the white noise of drama, attempting to clear her mind of the events transpired and instead remind herself why she was still here. With a partner, unfortunately-- she couldn't say how they would get along, but if things go awry she swears she's taking up position in Twinleaf. New trainers wouldn't bother her, and everyone else would be too stubborn to go so far backwards.
Her eyes flit between the sidewalk and her phone screen- except she wasn't browsing social media. No, Lena had resigned herself to this mission, Staraptor flying above and ahead with a streamed view of his surroundings on her screen. The small camera is pressed against his feathers around his neck, blending in with the bird's plumage. "Stop there, Lancer." A tap on the screen and the device on the bird releases a single beep, at a frequency unheard to human ears. The tech was nice, she'd admit. The modified stylus was making her life immensely easier. She speaks into the radio on her left breast, just below her shoulder. "Target sighted, entering the cave mouth."
Shit.
She was about to lose all eyes- Lancer couldn't get in there, not without making himself obvious. "Visual lost. We have to move now."
if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes
"understood."
the beat of her heart that accompanies the new mission gets her mind of everything. it is increasingly easier to just deal with the immediate task in front of her than to think back to floaroma, to jason, and how everything could have gone smoothly. but then she had been promoted, and now she was dealing with her first mission as an elite. for that, she'd been paired with someone she knew nothing about, except for the fact that the girl had been on the job longer than she was. it was fine. isabelle wasn't used to dishing out orders yet, so she wasn't out of her element.
almost immediately, she had gone from being coffee-fetching cadet to someone tasked with something dangerous and and serious. the rangers had been tipped off about galactic activity in the ruins of celestic town, and now a "person of interest" had just been sighted moving into the cave due north.
"gotcha. moving in." isabelle waits a bit for the man to make a small or get far ahead enough, and then darts into the opening, wearing a tight black suit with dark orange stripes, the general logo of the PRA stiched into the corner.
when she walks in the darkness envelops her, though it's not pitch black. she looks around-- the pathway seems narrow here but opens up further ahead, where she's guessing the spy has gone. something about the delicate, ancient stillness of the ruins makes her think back to adrien arkwright, and wonder how the seemingly passionate man may have felt at the ruins being so desecrated by team galactic. "what was that?"
it was too late now. isabelle did not know how many were in there, though the intel hadn't told them the group would be large. a hand removed a taser from her belt, and the other held on to a pokeball, not quite unlatching it from its place just yet. "i don't know, a bat? jeesus christ, sam, you're paranoid as hell."
isabelle breathed out. "i think someone followed us in."
footfalls in the distance. hunched behind a large rock, isabelle flipped the safety off her taser.
celest. togetic. female. fleeing! one more encounter!
Lena, donned in the same suit, follows on Isabelle's heels-- have to stay in formation. Her eyes flicker down as she shuts the screen of the pokenavigator off, mentally crossing fingers as her Staraptor covers the outside. Don't panic, please don't panic, she's desperately thinking as the Galactic whispers in the distance make their way to the covered mouth of the cave.
She panicked.
Well, this was happening sooner than expected. The electric wires hit their mark, albeit farther than Isabelle may have presumed. Lena leaves her crouched cover behind the other Elite, gun (alebeit filled with rubber bullets) out. In the distance chaos stirs- radio signals come and leave, and the enemy knows something is wrong. "Jumped the gun a bit, huh?" Lena grunts as she slams the butt of her pistol across a grunt's jaw-- the man falls, disoriented and in pain enough to the let to two pass for now. One more in proximity. Her pokemon are too big for this cave- Lena is forced to rely on personal training, using her own tazer to bring down the third grunt that had been in the group close to the ranger pair.
"Shit, shit.." her mind races as she tries to figure out their next move-- her back is plastered to the wall, whispers echo off the walls of the cave in the distance. They had to get to those fossils before Galactic- anything else would be unacceptable. There was too much ancient information in this cavern to be freely distributed. One hand signal: move forward. There are more to come-- Lena only has so much stamina, and the cavern narrows. Lena planned to be brute force, not sneak attack.
if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes
everything else moved in double time-- the girl jumped out from behind her, knocked a grunt out cold, the person on the other end of the taser fainted, and suddenly two unconscious heaps adorned the hard floor of the celestic ruins. isabelle gives the other elite a small, crooked smile. "couldn't help it."
the girl seems intensely focused, but inside her there's probably some sort of calm, judging the from the crisp, clean movements of the girl in battle. for isabelle, it's the opposite. she looks steady, nothing about her shakes, but instead her insides are full of worst case scenarios and terrible thoughts. "we need to get more space. we don't know how many there are," isabelle says flatly-- the corridors are not wide enough for any pokemon except maybe celeste, but she doubts the togetic is very threatening. isabelle quickly removes a small smartphone from her pockets, the app on screen displaying the basic map of the cavern and where they are. it doesn't account fro pokemon or enemies, and doesn't have built in radar.
she removes a pokeball from her belt and enlarges it, opening it wide unveil a large crobat, sturggling awkwardly. "find open ground," she orders, and the crobat begins flapping, moving itself in front of them. it would likely be easily glossed over by any galactics, given that not seeing a crobat in a cave would be more surprising than seeing one.
immediately, vision is restored to the duo. zahne has been equipped with lancer's gear, and has just entered the open space at the end of the corridor. her screen now shows a small excavation in progress, and two galactic spies loading some kind of goods into a trunk. other than that, the cavern almost looks empty, but the view isn't 360 degrees, and it certainly doesn't account for anyone or anything in the other sections of the ruins. but they need to decide, because the two onscreen are already talking, looking around them.
no doubt corpse one and two will be missed in a few.
"your call," she says quickly, eyes darting back up to the blonde.
ZAHNE. FEMALE. CROBAT. PERCHED ONTO ROOF OF CAVE. BIDING TIME.
agreed. the two funnel in through the narrow space like rats through a drain pipe-- lena can't help but get this sinking feeling something will go terribly wrong, they they're caught in a trap. she does her best to remain optimistic, remind herself that there was no way galactic could have changed an entire cavern in a week, but the paranoia remains. is that the smell of gas? she doesn't know. did it get hotter? colder? she does her best to shake herself out of it, remain collected for the sake of the other.
it's little moments like these that she thanks arceus she's not alone, a mental sigh of relief coming with the vision gained by the crobat. relief that is cut short very quick by a trip wire. makeshift alarms sound, ringing through the cave, absolutely deafening in the tight space. clearing it out the hard way, then! she has to shout as loudly as she possibly can, loosing a pokeball from her belt and hurling it forward into the cavern not too far from them. what the hell? the ball would burst to life, a roaring camerupt appearing, withholding its true moves but instead charging the two grunts near the truck. two more pokemon are tossed into the fray-- a screaming rampardos, with the same gear as both the crobat and staraptor, and a little stunky. Infant, check the back halls, stunky- smoke 'em out! the alarm makes it hard to think- she feels her head pulsing along with each blare of the siren. and destroy that fucking alarm!
lena has taken into an awkward run, careful of rubble and sharp edges. masks on, she speaks quickly, raising eye, nose and mouth cover over her face; much less clunky than a true gas mask, but just as effective. their voices will carry through a radio attached to the gear now- lena keeps on eye on her screen as she stick to the wall, confident in Infant's ability to take out the two grunts deep in a different mine. Through the smog another Galactic appears-- one who is quickly taken down by a shot to the thigh, and cuffed to a natural formation in the cavern.
save him for questioning. let's get the rest of this placed cleared and then call hq.
if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes
and then the alarm rang out.
isabelle's eyes widened and then quickly narrowed. unlike the blonde, she felt no paranoia, instead just an itching sense of motion and the a rush of willing madness. the girl throws a pokeball into the clearing, and isabelle does the same, a blastoise exploding from its container, roaring and charging much like the camerupt, one canon aimed at an overhead alarm, blasting it with a forceful it of water, the little mobile contraption exploding as a result.
isabelle pulls on her mask as well, nodding at lena.
the smog makes it hard to see, but isabelle catches the silhouette of a man, seconds before he's mercilessly taken down but a shot to the thigh, stumbling both because of the smog and the bullet before falling down. the blonde rushes from behind to her handcuff him to a rock. "'kay," she says easily, her voice sounding odd as the ground shakes at the rampardos's movements. isabelle moves to cover the areas that their pokemon cannot, rampardos dashing in the inner tunnels and crobat speedily moving along with-- their two screens seem to be one and the same until zahne takes a left-- but isabelle is more concerned by the movement in a small little tunnel, about big enough for a blastoise to pass, but rough enough for her to be concerned it wasn't there in the first place.
she doesn't have to wonder if the tunnel is man made or not, because just then something stirs.
she sees something move, and rushes, enlarging a pokeball as she gets to the entrance. when she arrives, she tosses the pokeball as far as she can, like it's some time of time bomb. there was always a saying that the light off the end of an ampharos tail was so bright it could be see from space, and while isabelle could neither prove nor deny the theory, the sudden blast of sheer white light is enough to give it some basis. it lacks the bang of a stun grenade, but the grunt gives off a few curses and stumbled backwards, losing his vision. the ampharos uses its sweet time in letting lose a thunderwave, crippling the man and forcing him to the ground.
by the time the sheer white had died off, and the cave seemed mostly normal again, isabelle has already swooped in and cuffed the man, and was staring at the walls around her in amazement.
"you need to see this," she says over the radio, looking at the two walls of different fossils, shining stones, and other relics she can't name.
ZAHNE. FEMALE. CROBAT. CHECKING INNER TUNNELS CLEARED ALARM. TOOK DOWN A SPY
a scream can be heard over the alarm, from the hallway Rampardos infiltrated. It's followed by a roar- and silence. Glass shatters in the distance, and the alarm cuts to an abrupt halt. Lena breathes a sigh of relief, wiping beading sweat off of her forehead when the back of her forearm. Camerupt is on high alert, keeping guard as Lena takes off after Isabelle.
"See what? More?" she responds, glancing at her screen. Infant's is flakes with red specks-- she doesn't want to know. She ignores it, pretending the sick feeling in her belly doesn't exist. She's alerted to Isabelle's location with the Ampharos's flash, immediately running to the location. From the looks of it, all of the guards have been defeated- Lena is about to ask if they have the all clear until she emerges into the cavern.
She stops instantly, eyes wide like a child in a candy shop. "W-Wow". There were reports, but she could have never expected it to look like this.
How the fuck was this supposed to be protected? She pulls the gas mask off of her face, speaking into the radio below her left shoulder. "Objective found and secured. Recommending guards to be kept here at all times. Mission complete." Maybe she's speaking too soon, but all hostiles have been subdued. Infant comes charging back, briefly passing the cavern before joining the camerupt. "Keep watch!" she calls out to the pokemon, only to sigh as she sees it wander into another cavern on the camera.
"Wow." Looking back at it, she can't help but say it again. It makes her feel greedy; she almost wants to sit on her hands. "No wonder they wanted it, huh?"

stumble through heaven ● ● ● ●
if there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes
"I know right," is all she can manage, Isabelle, too, turning breathless. For her though, it's the sheer beauty of it-- she was born rich, and she can only vaguely guess the worth of everything there, since the concrete price of anything usually goes over her head. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this room value is huge, and the amount of things they could do with these resource is likely insane as well. "It's beautiful."
Her eyes flicker to her screen- the rooms that Zahne encounters are filled either with unconscious grunts, or enitrely empty. She sees the blood dotted the otherside of the screen, clenching her jaw. Isabelle's never been a fan of gore, although this elite more experienced than her, apparently, so she guesses she can't do much other than raise a questioning eyebrow, which she does.
The blonde speaks with hasty professionalism that, Isabelle thinks, doesn't suit the blood that shows on the rampardos's screen. The radio beeps, crackles, then the voice of an operator is heard. "Understood. Guards have been dispatched. Elite Ruddy, Elite Night, your presence is requested at HQ as soon as you can confirm the arrival of backup."
Isabelle sighs a sigh of relief, willfully ignoring the screens and looking at the walls of the cavern instead. "Imagine the things they could have done with this." But then she pauses...wait..
"Ruddy?" She looks over at the blonde, her mouth splitting into an odd, crooked grin. "Don't tell me you're the chick that managed to step on a hundred pairs of toes as soon as she set foot in the ranger HQ?" Isabelle lets out a short chuckle.
That had been a strange incident, one that Isabelle didn't involve herself in. She remembers the night back at Jubilife, when they had partied after stopping the Tyrannitar. The only thing most the men could talk about was how disgusting the rookie trainer turned ranger was, how dare she stand above them, and a lot of degrading, semi-sexual insults. Isabelle didn't really understand-- if the girl was good, which, she undoubtedly was, that was fine.
Besides Isabelle could relate. Every ranger at school had hated Isabelle's guts because she'd come from a rich family, without bothering to learn she'd practically dodged several threats and hate from her own siblings to get there.
a weak smile would show on her face upon recognition, blush obvious as she stammers an 'understood' into the radio. "haa.. yeah.." she doesn't know how the other girl is going to react-- rampardos returns, and is promptly placed back into his pokeball before he can do more damage. lena does her best to ignore the red on him that she sees before he goes back into the pokeball.
"Stepping on toes was never my intention, trust me," she sighs, pulling the mask off of her face and pushing hair out of her eyes. What could Galactic have done with this? Her mind flickers to Liam, to the package, to the trip to Eterna. Galactic didn't seem like much more than childish grunt work at the time-- now it was very, very real. "Pleasure is mine. Great work here, really." Shouts are heard from the entrance, echoing through the caverns. With a quick nod to Isabelle, Lena takes one final look at the treasures and turns to head out, Staraptor waiting for her at the entrance as the spy gear is taken off of it. Having recalled all of her pokemon by now, they are only released once again to get their gear removed. Dirty looks are given at the sight of the Rampardos; she keeps her head down, recalling the beast as soon as she possibly can.
Debriefing at 8.
Lena looks at her watch-- 7:30. Of course. With a sigh she turns to Isabelle, offering a tired smile and extended hand. "It was great working with you, maybe we'll be paired up again some time." To her side backup begins to go in and retrieve the unconscious grunts-- Lena has the full intention to leave before they find her the results of her dinosaur's rampage.

NOTHING EVER LASTS FOREVER. EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WROLD.
isabelle immediately smiles at the girls' reaction. call her cynical, but it's been more than centuries since she's seen something that genuine, and while the girl isn't as fun or as snarky as she would have liked, if she's fine with strutting around towing a blood-stained rampardos and can kick ass and takes names, isabelle wouldn't mind seeing her again. genuinely. "now all you can do is dance while you're still on them," she advises, quoting straight from a page in her sister's book.
in the corner of her mind, she imagines her initial conception of galactics: petty street thugs chasing dialga and palkia like second graders attempting to play football. and then she thinks that they're actually a well organized and well informed organization, with the resources to pull off this. it's scary, terrifying, weighty. this isn't the first time she's had the sudden inspiration to take being a ranger seriously, but this is the time that has left the biggest impression.
then lena speaks again, and she's pulled out of it, instead giving the girl a wry smile. the rangers arrive, and people start looking at them strangely. she takes off her mask and shakes lena's outstretched hand. "you too. i hope we meet again." for once, it's not some mellifluous lie she learned from isabella.
isabelle shoots the galactics around her a dark look; unlike lena, she seems unafraid of losing her own reputation, or even tossing it out the window. "try taking a cave full of galactic out without blood, you sissies," she shouts, just as the rampardos disappears. the rangers look away and begin conversing among themselves.
she mirrors the girl's smile, and turns to walk out. ugh, it was a long day of being good. she needs some coffee before the wretched sweetness gets to her.
