major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
with the rare pokemon out of the way, sidney's list of objectives narrowed significantly. he was supposed to find some partner here, another galactic spy of his approximate "level and loyalty". together they would raise a little hell and make a little trouble for the rangers, not the most elegant of jobs but one that he could live with. the problem was, he had no idea where or when he was meant to meet the man. the correspondence had been short and inexact. so instead he wandered the festival coolly. hands in his pockets and eyes alert as he looked around.
eventually he came to stop at a booth. if he was going to be wasting his time around here he figured he might as well get something for it. a candy apple later and he was walking again. no sweet was going to improve his mood (already he suffered, being surrounded by so many shouting voices and obnoxious children was like having a drill to his temple) but it was something. and it just so happened a something that didn't matter all that much. he had it to his teeth when some kid ran into him, not only bumping it hard into them but leading him to drop the sweet entirely. he had the kid by the collar in a heartbeat.
"hey now, that wasn't very polite," his voice was quiet but cold, almost dangerous, perhaps an overreaction to this situation, "so what do you have to say for yourself? any words? apologies? go on, stop just looking at me like some idiot." the kid couldn't have been more than thirteen, but sidney didn't much care. not too long ago that was old enough to leave the house alone to battle dangerous monsters, surely it was old enough to know some damn manners.
Dusk upon them, Lena is making the rounds her new job required. Her eyes are set on monitoring the alcoholic side of the event, but she couldn't ignore everywhere else. Lancer scouts above her and keeps an eye on her at the same time, the overprotective bird silent in the rising night sky. Or not. A screech alerts her to a problem- she perks up, eyes darting around until it comes into view. One adult, one child, one fight. Err, a one sided.. scuffle? Lena isn't sure what to call it on a report form besides straight up bullying. She composes herself, stern, concerned as she approaches the two. The male looks all too familiar, another ghost from her naive past. She frowns. "Sir, is this necessary?" Really. Who just does that to a kid? The candy apple on the ground is sort of a hint, but who gets that mad over a candy apple? She frowns. "Put him down, now," stern voice tries its best to show authority, but she's more focused on the child in an instant. "Apologize and find your parents."
S-s-s-s-sorry sir.
The child stutters under Sidney's grasp-- Lena has to muster the willpower to make him let go of the preteen, if she has to. "See? Easy."
the voice that called out to sidney was familiar. not in the friendly, nostalgic way, but in the gut boiling fury way. all at once memories of an embarrassing victory flung to the forefront of his mind. some novice trainer managing to give him a challenge. and now what? this novice was going to bother him? he was ready to tell her to shove off when the uniform caught his eyes. oh, just perfect, now the blond was a ranger. on the upside, she didn't look as stupid as she had before. much more composed, certainly not challenging him to a battle as he'd expected.
"well, now that i've got my apology why not," sidney sighed, not so much putting the kid down as pushing him in a direction away from him. the kid stumbled, but he managed to stay on his feet well enough to run off as the ranger instructed. thinking on it, sidney couldn't help but note how he'd never got the woman's name. or get it out of his head that the last time they'd met (no more than a few week ago, right?) the woman had been much more fitting of the title "girl". yet there was something about her posture and confidence. it demanded an iota of respect, even if it wasn't spoken.
"he would have apologized either way, he didn't need some ranger babying him into it," basically, it would have been easy either way, "and if he thought he did i would have proved him wrong pretty quickly." sidney was, ironically, not in the mood to put up the apathetic face. he was frustrated. the noise was getting to him, memories of this woman before him had him heated, and he didn't even have the stupid fucking candy he'd wasted his money on. and then a quick fix occurred to him. he fixed the woman's eyes with his own
"you! we're going to battle right now! we made eye contact, you have to now," his words dripped with faux energy, an imitation of what the woman had said to him when she was still just some girl, "i mean, it's been about a month. weren't you going to hunt me down?"
She ignores his protests- they didn't matter, as long as the kid was out of the way. In all honestly she would have reacted similarly, but moral code and ranger obligation said otherwise. If anyone had found out about her failure to act, it would had been a slap on the wrist-- and she needed a clean slate. "He's still learning," she mumbles, with no real defense for herself. Not that it mattered, the stranger was moving straight on to the real problems.
His tone makes her cringe, her lips tug down into a frown as she remembers her behavior exactly as well as he does. She feels her face flush, her palms clam up. She clears her throat, looking aside to avoid looking at him. "Well if you feel that strongly about it.." she plucks a pokeball off of her belt, ignoring the Staraptor that watches on with curious and concerned eyes. One bounce off the ground and a very unexpected, very weak-looking opponent takes the field. The slowpoke sits there and stares up at Sidney with a stupid grin on its face, and unblinking eyes that seem dead inside. Yeah, she sure came a long way with a pokemon like that.
"I've had better prospects than to hunt down an angst-filled asshole. Get out your pokemon."
already there was a buzz in sidney's ears. he hardly payed the woman any mind as he sorted through his thoughts. what pokemon to lead with? what would this woman have now? they'd both had plenty of time to battle and train, but the woman had been so slow and gentle with her pokemon. it was hard for him to believe they'd grown to be all that strong. when she sent out her pokemon it not only validated this thought, but he nearly lost it right there. a laugh caught in his throat as he made his own pick. this would be easier than he thought.
"i figure i've been looking forward to crushing you for awhile," he spoke the words as he plucked a pokeball from his belt and threw it onto the festival grounds. already he could hear people murmuring and making space as alakazam was freed from her pokeball. the evolution had happened not long after the capture of tyrunt, and he had to say he was quite happy with the change. the height made her more imposing, and he could only imagine how much stronger she was now that she'd evolved.
"anyway, it's a good thing i found you then. neither of us had to do any hunting, just try not to waste my time again," of course he couldn't just start the battle without some kind of jab, "i'll take the first move if you don't mind, go for it alakazam." the typing was obvious, and so the move in response was obvious. the air began to spark and crack as alakazam prepared her first attack. charge beam. ready to wipe that stupid, smiling oaf right off the battlefield.
She only smiles at him, nothing to say to his quips or comments. Lena had no right to make judgement until the battle was over-- hell, he could be right. His pokemon were already stronger than hers before, what could have changed now? She takes one look at the Alakazam and assumes the worst. The thing is probably level 50-- still, she doesn't let it get to her. That much. "She's grown~". Kill them with kindness. The zap cannon sparks.
"Roll over, boy!"
Faux excitement for the slowpoke makes its dumb little eyes close and its body go limp, falling to the side. The zap cannon flashes past its feet-- Lena jumps out of the way, watching the linear move disappear into the woods. "Good boyyy~! she cheers, shit eating grin on her face. "Stop them from doing that, please~" The slowpoke, still on its side like some stupid fuck, opens its dumb eyes. A faint, quick glow of blue and the disable becomes active. Lena stands in her place, hands holding each other behind her back. She kneels to give the slowpoke a good pat, rubbing the exposed white belly. She steps back only to allow the battle to continue-- she doesn't plan on losing an arm today.
slowpoke - 30 - 100% dodged zap cannon! used disable!
alakazam and sidney were both left a bit dumbfounded by the turn of events, though in retrospect at least he shouldn't have been. the thing was dumb, that didn't mean it didn't have any tricks. he guessed a dumb pokemon was probably even better in the right hands. they didn't have the brain cells to argue or rebel, they were like sock puppets for the trainer. still, that meant it didn't have anything going on well enough under the hood to defend itself. it wouldn't be making any worthwhile decisions any time soon.
"whatever, that's not our only trick alakazam," the psychic type nodded in response, pulling her spoons together and focusing. it wasn't going to be as effective, but a blast of psychic was certainly better than nothing. it was aimed at the slowpoke carefully, and with little care whether or not the woman stepped away from its sprawled out form. hopefully she did, but either way the thing was just laying there. unless it had the intelligence to roll back over sidney had no doubts the attack would hit.
"when you've got that out of the way put up a reflect," could never be too careful. if she had pokemon that weren't as pathetic as the pink blob in front of them it was only smart to set up some kind of defense. who knows, maybe that screeching skunk would make a reappearance.
A reflect, huh? She sighs-- there goes her plan on using Earthquake. Then again, probably not the best move among a crowd. The slowpoke is rattled by a psychic moves-- the thing yawns, but frowns. He didn't like that much. It rolls to its feet with a grunt, mouth opening wide to summon a purple goo out of the cracks of the ground around the Alakazam's feet-- the toxic aims to seem into the psychic type's skin, infiltrating every organ until the pokemon is useless. "Follow with water pulse, Pacific." Lena adds on-- no mercy, right? After all, the Galactic was the one who wanted the battle. A deep breath and the Slowpoke releases a wave through the air, heading straight for the Alakazam.
Lena is always ready for her next release, but for now watching the battle unfold will be enough. She's running through moves in her head, watching for fine detail, ready to summon the Staraptor down whenever necessary.
slowpoke - 30 - 70% hit by psychic! used toxic! used water pulse!
the toxic wasn't a terrible idea, or at least it wouldn't have been. alakazam hardly suffered at all from the affliction, wonder guard kicking in and keeping her safe from harm. sidney only smiled, a pointed expression at the woman. mocking. that wasn't good enough, and he wasn't going to let up just yet either. the water pulse shimmered in the air as it approached the alakazam, sidney decided to let it fly for a bit before getting in his order.
"go on, protect" a shimmer surrounded the alakazam as she crossed her spoons in front of her. when the water pulse hit it was for no damage. any damage it might have done completely ignored as it was turned into no more than a puddle on the ground. another smile. if this was all the woman had to offer sidney worried this really would be a waste of his time. and then he remembered why he'd challenged her. maybe it was for the best, it would make crushing her all the faster.
"that means it's our move, more of the same alakazam," another psychic blast fired as the protect's shimmer fell away. as sidney had suspected they weren't hitting as hard as the charge beam would have, but with enough time anything would get the job done.
A brow raises as both of Slowpoke's attacks fail. She gives a curt not to Sidney's smirk-- he was right, she didn't anticipate the ability. That was fine. This is moving too slowly-- Pacific can only do so much without protect of his own. He doesn't like being pestered much by the assault-- another blue flash and he aims to disable the Alakazam's psychic, even if it means releasing his hold on charge beam. "Good enough, bud," she sighs, recalling the slowpoke. Lena makes no motion for another pokeball- has she given up?
Of course not. Two fingers against her lips, she whistles for the Staraptor above. One swoop and the raptor is perched on the ground in a heartbeat. "You've seen this one before," she grins. She's not completely cocky, but she doesn't exactly bank on losing.
slowpoke - 30 - 40% hit by psychic! uses disable! charge beam no longer disabled. recalled!
the slowpoke was like a fish in a barrel, out of its element and easily disposed off, so it was no surprise when the woman returned it. sidney would have too. he didn't want to watch his pokemon get beat around like that, it was embarrassing. the disable was what confused him. what reason did she have to do that? it didn't make any more sense when the staraptor swept down from the sky. what was that going to accomplish? the answer as far as sidney was concerned was nothing. it would accomplish nothing.
"it looks fast," he responded to the woman's comment, "faster than before at least, we know how to handle that right?" he looked to alakazam with a grin, and sure enough she was already on it. her right eye shone bright, miracle eye, upping her accuracy to levels beyond where it usually would be. oh alakazam remembered this staraptor well. it wouldn't be darting around so freely this time around.
"then do it," the alakazam was quicker this time, charge beam gathered electricity fast before shooting directly for the big bird.
(chrage beam has a 70% of increasing sp attk on hit, rolled a 68)
Their last encounter, words had barely been spoken; now the opposing trainer was giggling with his pokemon like two girls at a slumber party. She would think it was cute, under different circumstances. "Protect." Not that Lancer needs the instruction-- the raptor understands self preservation quite well. The charge beam reflects off the surface of the barrier splitting in two directions as it fades. "Your turn, aerial ace, go".The bird of prey becomes a blur as it rushes forward on the tail end of the Alakazam's attack, wing sharpened and ready to slash against the psychic type.
"It's kinda nice to see." she speaks idly, twirling a strand of loose hair around her index finger. She leaves it at that, eyes trying to train to the bird to follow its movement.
staraptor - 34 - 100% used protect from charge beam! used aerial ace!
"by what standard?" sidney responded to the woman's comment with a raised eyebrow. more attached? hardly. ever since the alakazam had lost as an abra they'd been drilling how to deal with faster opponents. he just wanted to make sure she hadn't forgot the solution. that was all. a quick check in with more familiar language. surely that was it.
"protect," the staraptor looked dangerous. it was a decently large, fully evolved pokemon. even if he thought the stranger a lesser trainer, a strong pokemon was a strong pokemon. it was only smart to shoot for the protect, especially when sidney wasn't sure any of his other pokemon could hack the challenge of facing the bird. so, the familiar shimmer went up just as the opposing bird dived. the attack staggered alakazam even through the shield. no doubt it was a hard blow.
"okay, charge beam!" hopefully the closer range would make the move easier to hit, but there was no way to be sure.
(charge beam has a 70% of increasing sp attk on hit, rolled a 69)
Too slow. They'd have to work on it. Lena is less than impressed with the display, but she admires the bird's will to push on. Even now, he stays in reaching distance of the Alakazam, screeching as the charge beams gets the direct hit Sidney wanted to badly. Lena tuts- stubborn avian. "Go then," she calls out, sighing as the Staraptor breaks free from the charge beam's hold, taking advantage of their close proximity, talons reaching out for a repeated aerial ace attack on the Alakazam. One attempted hit and it swoops to bank in a circle, going for a second dive bomb on the Alakazam in succession of the first. He was motivated, if nothing else. Most of her team was.
"You just seem more involved." she shrugs, kicking a pebble away. "Nothing to be ashamed of."
staraptor - 34 - 60% used hit by charge beam! used aerial ace x2!
the rapid repeat uses of aerial ace surprised sidney, but at least alakazam was engaged. there was no way she'd be doing any dodging from this range, so her only choice was to attempt another protect. the shimmer started, solidified, and when the first aerial ace hit it held, but that was the only one she could get up. the second aerial ace hit cleanly, and knocked alakazam almost to the ground. it was a hard hit, but nothing she couldn't come back from. certainly nothing that would keep her down.
"come one now, on your feet," it was encouragement and more of a demand, but either way the psychic type seemed resolute to stand straight. on the way up another charge beam roared to life, hoping to catch the staraptor again since it had stayed so generously in range.
(protect has a 49% chance of success on consecutive uses, rolled a 27) (charge beam has a 70% of increasing sp attk on hit, rolled an 86)
