major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
sidney couldn't help the tiredness that weighed on him like a heavy blanket. he had stayed up late the other night, another tedious battle and more invasive strangers keeping his mind active later into the night than he'd intended. not that it was any different from the previous day, or the day before it. his life had been following a schedule it seemed. walk into town, encounter idiots and boredom. leave town, enter route, be disappointed and frustrated by his pokemon. it was like a never ending cycle, and today he was about as ready to start it again as he'd ever be.
"i've seen what mawile can do, and i'm perfectly aware of heracross is capable of," he spoke the abra that sat atop his shoulder, but really with the way he looked into the distance and rubbed his eyes he could have been talking to anyone, "now it's your turn. if a wild pokemon shows up i want you to show them your power, i already used a technical machine on you so you better prove you were worth it." he more sighed than spoke the words. was this really the life he'd locked him into when he decided to take up training? this perpetual, overwhelmingly dull cycle?
"and listen, i'm not in the mood for any hijincks. i know you think yourself a trickster, but i want all my pokemon to be straightforward," with nothing else to do he continued his instructions. honestly, the route was quiet. very quiet. and while on one hand he appreciated the lack of interruptions from pokemon or strangers, on the other hand it was weird. the silence almost made him anxious. maybe that was why he just kept chattering, filling the abra's head with his expectations and rules.
Now, this was only something she had seen in movies and games, but Lena was darn sure convinced it would work. Having decided to scope out route 203 before her journey tonight, she had placed herself still on the path, staring ahead. In the movies, someone would come along, see her, and want to battle. Surely it would work like that here, wouldn't it? A young man, looking to be a bit older than her, is approaching.
He passes her without a word.
Lena's dumbfounded, staring at the blue-haired, abra-wielding trainer (?) as he continues on, talking to his pokemon. Her jaw could have hit the ground. Why didn't it work?! Is he that self-absorbed? She jumps to action, trotting after him, almost breaking into a full out spring just to place herself in front of him. Wow, running was hard. Panting and bent over with both hands on her knees, she holds up a 1 sec index finger to him.
Okay. All good.
She clears her throat, flipping her hair and proudly placing her hands on her hips as she grins him down. "You! We're going to battle, right now! Let's go! We made eye contact, you have to now!"
Lie. She wasn't going to wait for his protest. Lena ejects her Marill, the water mouse bouncing up and down with the same enthusiasm as its trainer. Anything to fill the boredom.
the sound of plodding feet usually would have gone unnoticed under the sounds of wild pokemon and rustling grass, but with the unsettling calm of the route the sounds of a person sprinting in his direction were hard to miss. not that sidney had any intention of addressing them. over the last couple of days he'd been accosted, battled, and lectured by random people who knew little to nothing about him, and while not all of it had been terrible it was certainly tiring. and with how tired he already was, he just wasn't sure if he could hold his composure in the face of another challenge. unfortunately, the choice wasn't his.
his pursuer caught up with him quickly (after all, he certainly wasn't going to run), and when she did she was very straightforward. the little bouncing blond seemed his opposite in that moment. she was excited, and energetic, and unlike him wanted nothing more than to battle. so much so that she didn't even give sidney a chance to respond to her challenge before sending out her pokemon. to say the bold gesture was taken as an insult would be too kind. the mere thought that some stranger, with some stupid water mouse of all pokemon, could assume they had the right to stop him in his path and challenge him to a battle under no pretense but some stupid movie trope was not laughable but night infuriating.
"huh," it wasn't a thoughtful noise, but rather a heavy one as sidney did his best to exhale all the anger and irritation bubbling up inside. he was so sick of this. so sick of this. but he had to hold it together. outbursts would only make the whole thing worse, and so he did his best to keep a cool posture and disinterested expression even as his face reddened and his fists clenched, "abra, get down there." his voice was steely when he spoke, and the abra responded without question -- floating easily from his shoulder to the ground, where it hovered in a cross legged position.
"remember what i told you, don't make me regret it," his teeth ground in his mouth, the tightness in his jaw one of the few signs of his quietly flaring temper. thankfully, abra gave him no reason to grow more frustrated. acting quickly, the abra opened its eyes wide as power swam around him. extending a hand, it did its best to throw the opposing marill with a powerful psychic attack.
She can only stare with wide, expecting eyes as she waits for his response. After what seems like a decade, the stranger (though seemingly reluctant) partipates. A dumb grin spreads on her face as the abra enters the small, make-shift battle arena.
It vanishes very quickly. The wave of psychic power comes too quickly for the Marill to dodge, and she's knocked back into Lena's feet. One attack? Really? Lena's lips purse, she looks at the stranger carefully. He didn't seem any different than an average guy, besides maybe the bright blue hair. Anime protagnoist? No wonder she was losing. She's about to recall Zuzu when it gets up, shakes itself off, and uses tail whip before charging at the psychic type head-on. Lena is speechless- she didn't command this; is it normal? She can only admire the thing's will to fight. It's much too late to use a potion-- Zuzu is going to have to hold on a bit longer.
She doesn't dare speak another word to the stranger, embarrassed from her earlier outburst. If only she had known how much stronger they were... No wonder nobody did this in real life.
marill - 11 - 16% hit by psychic! used tail whip! used tackle!
as much as sidney hated these incessant challenges, there was always something just so satisfying about crushing the hopes of the challenger. it offered a gratification similar in nature to proving someone wrong, but with the added benefit of having a physical representation of the lesson. not only did the trainer learn they couldn't just walk up to someone and harass them, but they learned it through the stomping of their pokemon. it was the silver lining to the disgusting storm cloud that was the last few days, and this girl was no exception.
from the moment the psychic hit it took everything in sidney not to smile. he was doing a good job suppressing his rage, it was even more important he keep himself from getting too happy about it all. happiness would lead to confidence, confidence could lead to carelessness. instead he forced himself into something resembling neutrality, staring stone-faced at the battle as it proceeded. it was surprising to see the marill get up after the first hit. it had seemed to really do a number on the pokemon. yet there it was, taunting abra before charging forward. he figured he'd let them have it.
"soak the hit, the range will benefit you," the abra listened well enough, that grin that she wore on the day she was caught present once again. a knowing smirk that cropped up whenever she believed she was getting away with a trick. the marill collided on the tackle, and it left a more sizable dent than previously thought, but in the end it was simply bruising force and now the opponent was right in front of her. quickly she reopened her eyes, fixing the water type with a sly expression before extending a hand again.
psychic, round two.

Water gu-" her exclamation comes to a dead hault with lack of time. Zuzu still gathering her bearings after that tackle; the pokemon's eyes opened to a second wave of psychic energy. The Marill was once again sent back flying-- this time into its pokeball. Lena feels a small bit of anger bubbling in her, directed both at herself and her opponent. Naturally, she felt defensive over her pokemon, but she asked for this. More motivated than ever, she sends out her starly. Despite her lack of time to bond with the flying-type, she trusts its speed and power as greater than most of her team. Toad may have been with her longest, but the bulbasaur could only do so much at its current power level.
"Flank when you can, go for the wing attack," the excitement in her voice is gone as she tries to remain calm and keep her tone from cracking. The starly flutters above, wings shining as it dives down to bombard the abra with a wing attack. Speed and precision, that's what they're going to aim for. Lena will take out at least one of his pokemon, if it's that last thing that kills her.
and just like that one was out of the way. sidney wasn't surprised. just like most of the other nobodies who challenged him, this girl had no bite to her bark. her pokemon were weak and she made the mistake of assuming his would be too. not a chance. the thought again threatened to bring a smile to his face. this girl's hubris was leading to her downfall, just another anecdote for a future speech. the follies a young trainer makes when they let their emotions throw them into risks unprepared. he smiled wide as she sent out her next pokemon. apparently she hadn't had enough.
the starly the stranger released flitted about, following its trainer's command to flank the abra. he figured the abra would be able to handle herself on that front. it was a psychic type, which generally meant above average mental faculties. he figured wrong. too much pride in the pokemon he hardly knew meant he paid the price. when the starly came in abra noticed too late, and the wing attack just about knocked her to the ground. she levitated lower than usual, and when she righted herself she was shaking with a long, dark mark spreading across her back. a clean, powerful hit that left the pokemon shaken. dangerous. but on the other hand a boon. now she was angry.
eyes opened wider than before as the abra attempted to track the flying type with her eyes. another psychic followed, intending to ground the bird. hard.
abra | lv16 | magic guard | health: red teleport - psychic defense down -1
Lena can't help but feel a small, satisfied smirk as the starly's attack makes it mark. No reason to get cocky, but she does feel a small bit of pride in her pokemon. The abra is visibly angry-- can she use it to her advantage? Lena waits. And waits. Lancer calls out, getting axious. The attack is coming any second. "Now!" she commands. The phsyic wave may have been tracking starly, but it would now be used against the pokemon. All of that focus onto one spot had the potential to leave the psychic pokemon open to another attack. The wave of energy flies past the starly, barely. The starly plunged toward the earth at the last second, narrowly avoiding the blast.
And now, for the follow up. Energy visibly cascading off of the flying type's wings, Lancer goes in for the kill. Lena has her hand on its pokeball in case of an emergency, but her eyes are glued to the scene for now, waiting to see if her little bird makes the goal.
the psychic missed, though sidney could only really tell due to the abra's quick attempts to reposition and catch the starly in her eyes again. for a moment he worried the abra wasn't taking this seriously, that her confidence had got the better of her, but when he saw her face it was clearly not so. her mouth was a hard line, the smirk nowhere to be found, and her eyes were dangerous. open but narrowed. whether from pain or anger, sidney couldn't tell. regardless, this time the abra saw the attack coming. a physical dodge would have been hard, impossible really, but this was a pokemon made for escapes. in a second it seemed to blink out of existence. teleport vanishing it from where it had been and to a position closer to the stranger.
"admirable," though the word was a compliment it hardly sounded like one, spoken by sidney through tight lips and a tense jaw. the abra attempted the same routine again. with some distance between her and the bird she strained to capture it in her eyes again, another psychic brewing under the surface.
abra | lv16 | magic guard | health: red teleport - psychic defense down -1
All of that excitement fades as the abra teleports. Starly, not experienced enough to know to turn quickly, is hit by the psychic almost immediately. Having to stop itself from running into the stranger previously, its hesitation is now the reason is plummets down to the ground. Lena recalls it before it ever hits the dirt. She pauses, looking between the abra and its trainer. All she needs is one hit... She gulps, releasing her stunky. Toad is too precious to her to be thrown around like some psychic rag. While she did enjoy the company of her stunky, she just couldn't bear to put the bulbasaur through psychic attacks. Lena takes a breath.
"Poison gas".
And holds it. Whatever happens after is beyond her. The stunky focuses on not succombing to the psychic pokemon's moves, bracing itself for the worst. It lunges under the cover of its own toxic gas, claws extended with the full intention to scratch the enemy.
satisfaction over another downed pokemon was quickly interrupted by the purple haze that accompanied the stunky. sidney was quick to respond, taking a step back and holding his breath, but abra didn't have the luxury. too close to the released pokemon, she couldn't help but breath in the toxins, and struggling with their effect left her open. too focused on the burning in her throat and eyes she didn't notice the opponent's approach, and the scratch finally grounded her. a red capture light had it returned in an instant.
"i guess i can lump you in with heracross," the condemnation was quiet as he clipped the psychic type's pokeball to his belt, removing a pink one in its place. a flash of white light and mawile took the stage, looking confident and unbothered by the lingering poison. instead she smiled before jumping into action. with quick steps she bounded towards the stunky before spinning around, aiming to slap it with an astonish using her huge jaws.
It's a breath of relief the second the abra is recalled. Finally. Pumpkin is obviously proud of herself, ignoring the battlefield to chirp at her trainer. Lena panics, "no, no, turn around, we're not--" the mawile takes advantage of the stunky's situation. Done..
Pumpkin cries out with a screech as the jaws clamp on to it. Upon release, the skunk pokemon twists itself and aims to retaliate with a new move to Lena, fury swipes. Lena realizes that this whole time, she's made no contact with the trainer himself. She clears her throat with the full intention to speak, but the battle is too worrisome. She can't bring herself to look away. She can only pray that any pokemon he had left weren't as bad as that abra.
stunky - 08 - 83% stunky used screech! stunky used fury swipes! (predicted 2 hits w/ 4% each)
sidney was always amazed by the mawile's attitude in battle. it was strange. she was invested in the battle without being overly aggressive, but yet she could play around without getting sloppy. like a mix between his other two pokemon, all brawns heracross and all brains abra. she'd showcased this skill on route 202, and here she was doing it again on route 203. when the stunky turned to attack her she let it, putting up her arms and taking three hits from its fury swipes before hopping back and out of harm's way. it might as well have been zero to be honest. the mawile's typing left her arms deceptively solid, and the fury swipes little more than razor burn. bothersome but at the end of the day harmless.
"get in there," that was all the prompting from sidney that mawile needed. whatever kind of life she had lived in the wild had made her a mean one. grinning, she attempted to close the gap between herself and stunky before reaching her arms out -- as if to embrace them. another tricky move from the deceiver pokemon. waiting in those arms was only danger in the form of a vice grip.
mawile | lv17 | hyper cutter | health: green iron head - play rough - vice grip - astonish - fake tears - taunt defense down -2
If only Pumpkin wasn't such a fucking moron, maybe then Lena would have faith in the thing when it battled. The stunky of course saw the 'hug' as an opportunity to make peace-- it didn't even try to get away. The stunky went toward the mawile, only the scream when the vice grip closed in around it. A useless poison gas fills the air due to the scared stunky, its reaction only making the situation. It squirms in Mawile's grip, screaming like a trapped animal the whole way. If anything, it was annoying. Pumpkin lashed out with more fury swipes, helpless in this devil's arms. Lena could only sigh-- let the thing learn its lesson. She gives up, takes a seat, and releases her Bulbasaur for the next leg of the battle.
It was clear this was going to be a losing fight, but she was perisistent if anything. She would pamper Pumpkin later, but the stunky had to learn one way or another.
stunky - 10 - 20% stunky used poison gas! stunky used fury swipes! @sidney
while the poison gas was harmless, the screech coupled with additional fury swipes was anything but. made sensitive by the noise, mawile couldn't help but wince as more fury swipes landed and scratched up her skin. sadly, this wouldn't work to the stunky's benefit. if anything it ensured a quicker defeat. sidney could tell the mawile had been ready to play with her food as she often did, but the scratches irritated her. her head began to glow bright, and in an instant she delivered and iron head, fully intending to knock out the pokemon in her arms.
meanwhile sidney took to observing the opposing trainer. the sight of her again commanded smiles that had to be carefully denied. that enthusiastic child was gone, instead she sat on the ground looking positively huffy. good. he hoped she'd learn her lesson. bothering strangers over your petty desire to battle, for whatever reason, was stupid, foolish, and obnoxious. whether her pestering was at the behest of her own boredom or some moral alignment was inconsequential. she'd proved herself a nuisance, and now she was being handled as one.
