Caine fidgeted as he approached the Gym doors, which glinted at him as sunlight reflected back into his eyes. He'd prepared for this day, but he wasn't sure just how powerful Roark was. He'd researched, he'd practiced, he'd created strategies, but he knew that in the grand scheme of things, it was the action that counted.[break][break]
He took a deep breath and entered, watching as the automatic doors slid open. A gust of cool air greeted him. Caine set his jaw and walked inside, filled with determination to succeed.[break][break]
Roark, with a ridiculous hard hat on his head, noticed Caine enter and he pushed his glasses up his nose. The gym leader gave a wide smile as Caine approached him purposefully. "Welcome! This is the Oreburgh Pokémon Gym! I'm Roark, the first Gym Leader in Sinnoh! I'm but one Trainer who decided to walk proudly with Rock-type Pokémon! As the Gym Leader, I need to see your potential as a trainer. And, I'll need to see the toughness of the Pokémon that battle with you!"[break][break]
Caine barely listened to the man's pleasantries. He waved his hand and gave the leader a half-smile. "Let's get this done with," he said. Roark laughed, but the steely glint in his eye told Caine that the man had no intention of losing easily.[break][break]
The two figures, one a Galactic grunt and the other a gym leader, backed up to create a sizeable area between them. Roark snatched a pokeball off of his belt, releasing a geodude from within.[break][break]
Caine already knew which pokemon he would send out. The skrelp emerged from its pokeball and trumpeted with delight, ready for a fight. The Galactic Grunt noticed that Roark had narrowed his eyes as he viewed the water and poison type come into view.[break][break]
The four-eyed gym leader ordered his Geodude to use Rock Throw, but Caine's order to his pokemon was swift. "Ayako, Hydro Pump." The sea dragon reared back, blowing a streaming jet of water at the rocky pokemon across from it. The attack splashed directly onto the Geodude's face and it wiped at it with a miserable expression. The water in its face had distracted the pokemon and the rock throw only hit Ayako twice. Caine winced as his pokemon grumbled with pain but ordered the water type to use "Aqua Tail". He grinned as he watched the Gym leader's pokemon loll to the side. It had fainted.[break][break]
Roark tched, but congratulated his pokemon for the hard work and sent out an onix. The onix roared with fury that shook the room, and Caine lifted an arm instinctively to shield himself. His turquoise eyes widened as he beheld the humongous pokemon, but he had expected Roark to have an onix. He simply didn't expect it to be so large in real life.[break][break]
"Ayako, come back," Caine ordered. The water type retreated to its pokeball and Caine sent out another. "Ajax, get 'im!"[break][break]
Roark grinned fiercely as he gave his pokemon a command. "Use Screech!" he called. The humongous rock pokemon let out an ear-splitting noise, so much so that both Caine and Ajax had to cover their ears. When Caine looked back at his pokemon, he could see that Ajax looked slightly disoriented, as if the noise had affected his hearing. Caine bit his lip. "Ajax, use force palm!"[break][break]
The fighting type shook its head and gave a mighty cry as it charged towards the many-times larger pokemon. Fearlessly, it struck with a powerful palm. The Onix gave an unhappy grunt before retaliating with Rock Throw. Caine winced as his small fighting type was hit several times in the face with flying rocks. When the dust cleared, he could see that Ajax was standing, but just barely. He whipped out a pokeball and recalled his pokemon.[break][break]
Caine narrowed his eyes as he selected a pokeball. It was his trump card. He released the pokemon hidden within in a flash of bright light. "Merlin, come out!" From the white light emerged an Aggron. Merlin stomped and roared back at the Onix.[break][break]
"Earthquake!" Caine called. Merlin reared and gave a terrifying roar. The ground began to shake violently, rocks and dust from within the gym began to billow around, and even Roark looked slightly afraid. The Onix was hit full-on with the attack, and it crumpled to the ground in a long coil of rock. The gym leader called back his onix and sent out another pokemon. "Have fun with this one!" he said, giving a wicked smile.[break][break]
Cranidos. That was what Roark had up his sleeve. Caine growled with frustration and gave Merlin another order of Earthquake. The opposing pokemon cried out, but it remained standing, even after the devastating attack. It used Leer, in an attempt to lower Merlin's defense. Caine watched as his pokemon grew angrier, lowering its defenses. He pointed at the Cranidos and ordered Merlin to use Iron Head. The armored pokemon lowered itself onto all fours and charged straight at the Cranidos.[break][break]
Caine's Aggron hit the Cranidos with enough force to push it over, making it lose its balance. The Cranidos tried to use Headbutt against Merlin, but missed. Caine began to smile - he could tell victory was in sight! "Merlin, use Earthquake!"
The last move did the trick. Caine watched as the Cranidos let out a whimper before falling to the floor. He huffed as he realised just how fast his heart was racing. Straightening and dusting his clothing, Caine called back his pokemon. He'd take them to a Pokecenter straight after this. "Thank you for the match," he said, smiling at the astounded Gym Leader.
