His father, Conner, already struggling with work, was not well-off by any means and worked long hours to support them both.[break][break] Not that his father was a bad father by being absent from home - Conner was a respectable worker who showed determination and pride in a job well-done. Even though he worked in a factory, it paid the bills, and often, Conner would take extra shifts to support himself and his young son.[break][break] He later met another woman whom he loved, and the two were married shortly after. Caine, now three years into his schooling, knew that his new stepmother didn't belong, and he often ignored her. He felt no affection or gratitude towards the woman who kept his father happy, but himself miserable, for she never once gave a thought to Caine as she didn't want to care for "something that was not hers". That feeling was soon quenched as Caine's stepmother died from an unfortunate accident - she was rushing down her office stairs when she tripped as she rounded the corner. Her momentum pushed her forwards and she tumbled down the steps. Her head was pushed against the wall at an awkward angle, and her neck snapped.[break][break] Conner, who had a history of depression when he was younger, fell into despair once again. This time, he took up the drink, being 'unable to cope with the pain'. And with the drink, Conner changed. He often drank too much, too quickly, and Caine, who was now in his fifth year, had to care for his father.[break][break] He hated how low his father had sunk. Conner was no longer optimistic and cheery - he'd arrive late for work, unkempt and unshaven, and his previously admired attitude was now forlorn. It was a pitiful sight, and Caine wanted nothing to do with his father in such a state.[break][break] It only got worse. His father became more violent as time went by. It started with only light cuffs to the head, but progressed to full-on beatings. Caine began to look for jobs as soon as he turned thirteen, just to escape the house. His father barely managed to hold onto his job, after being strictly told by his boss that he'd need to "shape up" and "keep moving forward". Despite Conner's constant please that he would do so, Caine could tell that nothing had changed.[break][break] It happened when Caine was alone in an alleyway after running from home. He'd been greeted by a Team Galactic recruiter, who had kindly held out her hand to help him up from his curled-up position on the ground. She'd given him a good meal and then proceeded to offer him cash. He'd refused at first, but she insisted. After several more nights spent like this, she managed to convince him to join Team Galactic - he'd be rewarded with pay and benefits from within the team. She elaborated on the team's goal, giving Caine the knowledge of Palkia and Dialga, pokemon of time and space. He kept his affiliation to Team Galactic a secret, only agreeing to perform jobs in early hours, or in places where no one he met mattered to him.[break][break][break] A DIM LIGHTIt was at the age of fourteen that Caine met Roseanne. They'd been paired up for a project. Caine was a loner, and he hadn't heard of the girl before, much less seen her. The two, at first shy and untoward, soon began to talk more openly about themselves with each other.[break][break] Roseanne's family moved to Veilstone half a year ago, as she had been told that the mountain air would be good for her. And it seemed that it had worked - the sickly girl began to regain color, and she was no longer confined to the hospital. Thus, she had decided to enter the public school, given that she had not been to school since a young age.[break][break] Although Caine never told Roseanne about his life at home, Roseanne seemed to be able to sense just how deeply he despised his own place. She would stay with him until it was late, just to give him an excuse to not return sooner. If bruises were evident on his face, she'd use what little make-up she brought with her to help cover them so his fellow classmates would not notice. She would even bring ointment to heal his wounds. She was kind and generous and Caine began to feel something more than friendship towards her.[break][break][break] A FALLEN FLOWERHe was always happy whenever he was with Roseanne, but the two would soon be torn apart.[break][break] Roseanne fell ill once again.[break][break] When Caine, seventeen, heard that she had been hospitalized, only then did he hear from her parents that she had cancer. He was shocked - he'd thought that the worst she had was a poor consitution, and that it had gotten better in her years in Veilstone. Her parents thought Roseanne had explained her condition to Caine. Amidst the confusion, Caine put together that Roseanne had lied to him to keep him from pitying her own situation.[break][break] And, if the doctors were correct, she only had a few years to live.[break][break] Caine began to be frantic. He'd spend as much time with her as possible. He didn't care if his classmates whispered behind his back, he didn't care if his father beat him more severely for forgetting to buy wine or for coming back late. Caine only wanted to spend time with Roseanne.[break][break] Team Galactic offered Caine more money for larger jobs, and he took them without protest. He did not know that Team Galactic knew of Roseanne, and Caine's desperation to save her.[break][break][break] UNCHAINEDWhile Roseanne suffered, Caine's hatred for his father only grew. His father, jobless and now a hopeless drunk, seemed hell-bent on making Caine's life miserable. He'd complain that Caine came back home too late, or that Caine's grades were low, and would send Caine to fetch groceries. He forced his son to give him money to buy more alcohol, and Caine was powerless to refuse.[break][break] Then his father died.[break][break] While Caine, now eighteen, had been away at school, his father, who had drank too much, moved to go to the bathroom when he had a heart attack. The emergency responders came as soon as Caine found his father prone on the floor, but it had been far too long - Conner had drowned in his own vomit.[break][break] Caine had mixed emotions at his father's burial - on the one hand, he had lost his only living relative. He'd had fun times with his father when he was younger. On the other hand, he'd finally been freed of an enormous burden.[break][break] Now, he was free to act as he pleased.[break][break][break] ONWARDCaine's original goal was to get money - and only money - by working for Team Galactic. He never intended to stay with them for long, and he had never before thought he would begin to plan his future around the team. Now, he had a different plan.[break][break] Rise to the top, become an admin, and capture Dialga and Palkia, without anyone knowing his true purpose.[break][break] All for Roseanne.[break][break] If he could stop Roseanne's time, halt it so she never aged and was no longer sick, then he could spend his life with her. He could extend her life, keep her alive, keep her close to him.[break][break] And so, with his selfish desires burning in his core, Caine set out to make his dream a reality.[break] [PTab=ROLEPLAYER]
