major news alert!
witness reports from all over the region has been flooding in about strange happenings at the three lakes. what's more perplexing is that these occurrences seem to be happening spontaneously at the lakes. just moments ago, a burst of light erupted at the locations and residents in the vicinity have reported that the lake-side pokemon have turned aggressive and attack on sight.
However, there have been rumours and sightings of the legendary lake trio which has had trainers flocking in from all over the region.
thump. pain rung in between his ears, the aftermath of a night out. it had become a common feeling now, the throbbing headaches, the nausea, the lack of will to do anything. he absolutely hated it but at the same time relished in knowing that the night prior must've been good. most of the times they were. but with day time came an obligation to serve and protect, and so here he was.
mission: reports have stated miners being attacked by wild pokemon. protect miners, find the aggressors and release them back into the wild. proceed with care, protect the environment. partner will be assigned.
12:20. as per usual the man was twenty minutes late to the given meet up time. thoughts were scattered as he made his way through town, soon arriving at the mine. dressed like he had just rolled out of bed the man finally arrived, eyes searching for his partner using the description provided; dark hair, skin, female. there most likely was more information but he must have skimmed through.
he yawned, approaching a female who he assumed to be his partner. "alpha?" he spoke. his attitude was lacking, voice bored as he spoke. "rory." introduction was short and simple, a polar opposite to something he had to practice when he was younger. and besides, he wasn't an unknown, if the woman followed any media she should have a slight clue of who he was.
"don't expect much from me today. you take lead." and by that he meant he wasn't going to do anything. or so he thought.
20 minutes early, as always. she expects nothing less of the partner she's been assigned, so one can only imagine her chagrin when he doesn't show. not even on time. she doesn't bother waiting- alpha can reprimand him upon arrival. rory mclain-- a hero in floaroma on the television, yet a slacker in real-time. she's disappointed, to say the least. alpha has already arrived at the outside of the mine, cries from down below begging for urgency-- she has no time to waste.
the woman has already gone to recon the caverns, only to be taken aback by the severity of the situation-- one miner is already unconscious on the floor, one wrapped in the tail of a steelix, the other in a corner by an arbok. four more huddle in the farthest corner of the room with a dead body in front of them, a crobat flapping in front of them, with two zubats to its side. alpha has to cover her mouth to keep from making a sound, golden eyes meeting with the miner in the tail of steelix. h-hey! he shouts, his air quickly depleting. snap.
the miner falls limp in the rock pokemon's tail-- alpha feels tears start to form in her eyes. she can't do this alone. not even a little bit. she can't just leave them here-- two releases of a pokeball and her suddenly very small pokemon are on the field. "focus on the living- defeat the arbok. deino, stand ground with the group. use any force necessary to defeat targets." she has to choke out the words. she can try using her stylus, but that doesn't protect her if something goes wrong. this is very much a two man job.
she checks her watch- 12:18. alpha nearly sprints out of the mine, just as rory arrives. rage contorts her face- she nearly backhands the man until remembering his status as seargant. "SIR, lives are at stake." she growls, eyes still red from the sight of the miners. "there are bodies. we need to move now." her voice is obviously strained- she doesn't wait for him to walk in before she turns and starts making her way back to the scene. "five targets: steelix, arbox, crobat, two zubat. two men down. one unknown. five priority." she's trying her best to keep composed, relieved to see her pokemon still standing, albeit battered upon re-entry. she can only pray he has her back as she unhooks the stylus, beginning to round up the arbok by using herself as a distraction. "sandile, to deino." she keeps her voice hushed as she moves slowly, nodding the miner no longer trapped by the arbok in the direction of the exit. that makes one.
but there's still that steelix, now taking interest in the runner. alpha is stuck face to face with the snake as she tries her best to charm it.
the man had expected this to just be a simple rescue mission, maybe eliminate a few zubats on the way. but he had severely underestimated the severity of the situation and it showed when the woman ran out of the mine, her voice carried a tone of worry he hasn't heard since the incident in floaroma. mood instantly changed.
it didn't look good. five targets to round up with only two rangers. the numbers were stacked against them. he called out two of his own pokemon, combusken and vulpix. the temperature in the mine suddenly shifted, humidity rising in the confined corners. drought. he really hated the heat.
he quickly analyzed the situation, picking out key targets to take down first. but it looked like his choice had been made for him as the steelix quickly approached. a hand reached down to his belt to grab his stylus, only to find that he had forgotten it. "fuck off--" he proclaimed. he was left with a choice; let the steelix through and hope that the woman would be able to handle it, or attack it. either way this wasn't going to look good on the report.
"attack only the steelix!" combusken was quick to move, blowing out a flamethrower at the steel snake, its power increased due to the mini drought in the mine. vulpix followed, shooting a fire blast, an attack much more powerful than the combusken's. the fire had to be controlled, contained so no damage would come to the mine. luckily both pokemon understood.
he then turned his attention to the unconscious body on the ground, zubats circling it. he couldn't do anything without a stylus, but they were only zubats. he remembered a mention of a crobat but it wasn't anywhere in sight yet. so he took the opportunity to rush forward, picking up the body only to be knocked back by a sudden appearance of a crobat.
"alpha!" he called out.
- weather: drought - combusken used flamethrower on steelix - vulpix used fire blast on steelix
she's still working on the hissing pokemon, narrowly dodging a poison fang as she feels the heat within the cavern raise. shit. is he going to destroy all of them? rory's plan goes better than expected-- the steelix falls to the heat, and the methane didn't cause the entire mine to explode. she can't breathe a sigh of relief yet-- ammit has fainted, the deino on his side and hapi desperately tries to fight a zubat off-- he can't get off the ground to attack the pokemon back. the sandile takes hit after hit, struggling to stay standing. and yet, it TORMENTS the zubat, preventing it from attacking over and over too many times. the 4 miners cheer for it as it tries-- one even makes a sprint to get out of the cavern.
arbok captured.
alpha turns, panting-- the crobat is gone. she can't see it fast enough, not until it's going straight for rory. "go!" she shouts, the allied arbok slithering at a sprint for the crobat, THUNDER FANG crunching down on the purple pokemon as it makes a jumping strike, body CONSTRICTING the crobat as it drags it to the ground, heavy body suffocating the electrocuted pokemon. alpha almost feels relief--
seven more zubat. the stress is exhausting, and the hoard prevents the miners from escaping. alpha lifts the unconscious miner over her shoulder-- strength training paid off, after all. the zubat the sandile previousy faught has joined the hoard, leaving the little crocodile time to catch its breath before it returns to alpha, as loyal as always.
"i can capture some, but your pokemon have the advantage here, mclain," she breathes, slumping under the weight of the unconscious man.
"miners! run when you see an open window, and yell if you are under attack!"
time to gear up for another battle. stylus out, she works on two at a time, cursing as the bond breaks over and over. hapi can only jump from the ground in an attempt to CRUNCH the zubat, while the allied Arbok works on swallowing the crobat.
all tension and stress went away after seeing the steelix and crobat fall. those were the only two that posed a serious threat, and now with them eliminated it made the situation a whole lot lighter. the seriousness that was on his face just a few seconds ago went away, the same cockiness and ego returning. still, he was too late to save people from dying and it wasn't the first time either.
seven more zubats. he almost laughs at how many there were. he had half a mind to just use a flame burst to target the hoard, but the group of miners along with the woman and her pokemon were making it difficult for him to. besides, it probably wouldn't be the smartest idea to tempt his luck with fire twice. he didn't want to die by explosion in a mine.
"surely that wasn't from the academy," he commented, referring to her strength. the body wasn't light by any means, so he was pleasantly surprised. "rory." he corrected. fuck his last name, honestly.
back to the zubats he went. "no more fire moves." he chuckled. ares resorting to using slash attacks to take down the zubats while hemera focused on an extrasensory, careful to distinguish between friend and foe. seven down to three. no more seem to be emerging from within the mine. "run run." the miners had a clear escape now, and the situation was dying down, which meant back to normal rory.
"you don't look like you're from around here." he commented, eyes shifting between the remaining zubats and her, not even bothering to help at this point. "where are you from?" his pokemon returning to his side, waiting for orders.
the hoard vanishes almost as quickly as it appeared- she's done her job, he's done his. and yet... two deaths still loom on her shoulders; she can feel them behind her, the weight on her shoulders (literally and metaphorically) becoming almost too much to bare. And yet, Rory speaks casually. Has he seen too much? She's uncomfortable. She doesn't answer his correction, only acknowledging it with a curt nod as she walks forward.
"We'll have to call medical for.. body removal." she sighs, adjusting the man on her shoulder. "Dahara City, in Kalos." she doesn't offer much more than that, stony face and weary eyes set on watching her step in front of her. Outside the miners huddle, gather their bearing. Alpha quickly calls back to HQ. "Two vehicles. One for treatment of the rescued, the other for.." she eyes the rescued group, turning away. "Body retrieval. We'll need an identification, and a call to their families."
She feels sick. There could have been anyone waiting at home, anyone who thought this job was safe. And yet, two men lost their lives. One due to her incompetence, the other.. well, she would just have start showing up as early as possible, even if it meant patrolling through rest hours. She's in no moods for conversation, leaving Rory in silence as she gently sets the unconscious man down, performing a vitals check.
there was a clear difference between how the two of them were taking the situation. she was much more concerned, possibly also blaming herself for not being able to do more. and he was much more casual, realizing that nothing good could come out of worrying. what's done is done, nothing could change that.
"i heard dahara's nice this time of year." he pushed on, keen on making some form of conversation no matter how grim the situation. he doesn't show it in his expression or voice but deep down he felt disgusted; both at the deaths and also at himself and how he might have been the cause of one. he craved alcohol, wanting to drown his sorrows.
he zoned back in time to hear her order. "right." the two pokemon now recalled as he walked over to the group. they were sat down on the floor, huddled together. the man didn't know what to do or say, he was bad at empathizing and also expressing emotions. so he sat down next to them, on the ground, doing whatever they were doing.
"you guys alright?" he spoke up. there was little to no response, maybe a nod and a soft voice but that was about it. he shrugged his shoulders, understanding that there was nothing he could say nor do to make the situation any better. "good talk."
so he left. he was more concerned about the woman than the miners. it seemed like she was affected by a bit by the situation, so he walked back over to her. "how you feeling?" he asked.
"just relax, there was nothing you could've done to prevent this." was he pushing it just a bit too far? maybe. but he wasn't going to stop now, the man had no idea when to. "drinks on me?" he offered.
"it is. i don't drink." her short answer is the result of her focus on the task at hand-- except there's no pulse. She tries all of the obvious spots before finally putting her head on his chest-- nothing. Alpha feels her heart skip a beat and her stomach sink as she pulls away, frantically looking over the body for a cause of death. Behind them, a scream for help can be heard coming from the mine.
"Shit". She doesn't have time to reprimand Mclain for picking the wrong body, and there's no reason to. She nearly flies out of her seat in a sprint back to the cavern. She can only pray he's competent enough to at least cover the body. This mission soured by the second.
Final boss.
Raniya's breath catches in her throat as the Rhyperior towers over the confused, awakened stranger. Why the pokemon are so angry, she won't know. She doesn't have time to think about it, and time is running out. The noise of the drill on Rhyperior's face starting to spin is deafening, and the man only screams before the stress knocks him unconscious once more. She's frozen. Hapi is out, but one wrong step and the Sandile would be squished under the Rhyperior's claws. Hands tremble as she grips on to the stylus. If anything, she needs to distract it. "HEY!" the shout goes unheard under the Rhyperior's weapon. She panics, hurling a stone at the thing. "HEY!".
When it turns, she nearly drops to the ground. The thing is so much bigger from the front, and she's stuck. Slow steps backwards become urgent as the angry ground type begins to charge. She can't run, not now. "Sandstorm, Hapi!" Alpha can only pray that reduced visibility will make her chances of calming the behemoth down better.
"you should." drinks solved all problems even if only temporary. the man could only look on as she struggled to find a pulse. another scream, this time from the mine that they escaped from. "you're kidding me." he scoffed. the woman sprinted back into the cave, leaving him to deal with the body. "alpha--" he yelled, but there was no stopping her. he cursed under his breath and quickly took off his jacket before placing it over the fallen body, covering the face.
back into the cave he went just in time to see a rhyperior charging. his vision was blurred by the sandstorm, but even under the cover of sand he knew there was no calming down the rhyperior. the woman was going to get hit, or at least that was what he saw. a sigh escaped his lips as he sprinted across, surprisingly faster than the rhyperior. he basically tackled the girl to the floor, grabbing her by her shoulders before letting momentum do the rest.
once they were safe and out of the path of the rhyperior a hand reached for two pokeballs. out came a noibat and a bergmite, both looked weak compared to the beast. "supersonic and powder snow!" he ordered. the purple bat though tiny was much quicker, circling around the top of the rhyperior to confuse it. when that was happening the bergmite would send its own ice attack. it was weak, but it acted as a distraction.
he looked over to his partner. "you good? there's no way we're taking it down. i'll go for the guy. keep it distracted." words were orders as he got back onto his feet. his eyes squinted under the sandstorm, but he identified where the rhyperior was and where the body was. "don't let me die, alpha." a chuckle escaped his lips.
recklessly ignoring how quick the rhyperior might be the man sprinted forward straight for the body.
adrenaline fuels her as she jumps out of the way of the Rhyperior, eyes wide as it charges into a different cavern behind her. She looks between Rory and the thing, still tense as she rushes to his aid. The Sandstorm dies down, but the roar of the ground pokemon still echoes-- there's no telling how close it is.
"Let's go. Now." With their combined strength they get out of the mines without another incident, though the feeling the ground type is going to emerge from the walls and absolutely demolish them both lingers in her mind. A vitals check is performed on the miner who begins to regain consciousness. Sirens can be heard close in the distance. As much as she'd like to duck a way and release all of the tension held in her lungs, Alpha stays, posture perfect as ever, only waiting until dispatch handles the miners to finally breathe a heavy sigh of relief and plop again the outside of the mine, physically and mentally exhausted.
"How does alcohol help this?" she grunts, arms crossed as she stares at the ground. Two dead men, but one alive. That was worth being relieved, but the still feels uneasy as the stronger rangers enter the cavern to retrieve the body still inside-- the Rhyperior's roar comes, and then stops abruptly.
it was embarrassing to see the other rangers swoop in and take out the rhyperior without a problem. it showed just how weak he was compared to the others. his team was weak, and he was weak. he lacked the motivation to get stronger but this might have just about done it. back into their pokeballs the noibat and bergmite went, both too weak to even stand up against the rhyperior. but it wasn't their fault. just like everything else it was his.
he sat down next to her, or at least close enough to warrant a conversation. he shrugged his shoulders. "you've never tried it? not even once?" he asked. fingers would find the ground, tracing through the dirt as he watched the situation slowly die down. "it numbs the pain." even if only temporary.
a voice spoke down next to him. he looked up to see a medic asking them if they were fine. "we're good. go check on the miners." he waved them off. he took the time to just relax, then not even a minute after another voice called out to them, this time from a superior, telling them to meet at hq for a debriefing.
"can't you wait til tomorrow?" he asked even though he already knew the answer. with a sigh he nodded. briefing time was in an hour so they still had some time to calm down. he looked back over at alpha.
"offer is still available. you'll definitely need one after debriefing."
the shake of her head is his answer as she sullenly stares into the dirt, foot moving around small pebbles as she thinks on the offer. the word pain gets her attention- alpha would glance over at him, concern on her face. "how much pain do you have? you're so young." she doesn't mean to invalidate, only question. it was a shame that someone his age-- their age hold so much back on the inside. she doesn't personally feel it, but raniya is forced to consider if she's had it easy these past few years.
or maybe she was used to it?
"i find there are better ways to cope," she sighs, hunching over again. "distractions, you know. games, exploration, other missions come." her words don't even reassure herself; all she can remember are the nameless men who lie dead. perhaps something alcohol was worth a try? their superior calls them to attention, her posture straightening immediately as she hangs on every word, nodding, even bothering to clear the frown from her face. the order to relax is given, and she's back into conversation with rory.
"i will go, but i will make no promises." there's a small smile despite her words; maybe it would be fun. she hasn't felt nervous like this since the first day of training in Dahara. Still, the excitement was enough to make the thought of recalling the whole mission to their superiors a bit easier.
She stands, offering him a hand. "We might as well get it over with.
the worst pain was internal. to her first question he could only offer a faint smile. "we're the same age aren't we?" he asked, ignoring the first half of her question. he'd shrug his shoulders when she mentioned other ways to cope. he's tried most of what she's suggested, none of them seem to have the same effect as alcohol does. "those only work for so long." ironic since the same can be said about alcohol. he'd notice her tense up when superiors showed up, almost doing the opposite of what he did. he took a mental note of it.
a smile would appear when she agreed to go. "good." he'd take her hand, using it to support him back up. no major injuries, just a few cuts and bruises that will heal on its own. dusting off his shirt he'd proceed in whatever direction they needed to go for this shitty debriefing.
