It is late night when Sabrina wanders around the halls of Galactic HQ, plagued by a bout of insomnia despite having no reason to. Life had been just fine for her, yet she couldn't help but wonder why she'd been rolling around in bed for the past couple hours, sleep evaded. She'd gotten up at that point, wandering the streets of Veilstone until she came upon the lone building.
A card swipe allows her entrance into the building. Half the lights inside have been turned off to save electricity, and it's eerily quiet as Sabrina idly walks through the halls. Few people linger to work this late, and she doesn't bother to talk to them when she passes them. It's then that she enters a random room, lights bright in contrast to the dimmed halls outside.
The sight admittedly perplexes her.
It's the laser cutter that's commonly used to engrave and slice through metal. A Beldum had been laid on top of the desk. Sabrina looks around, eyes landing on the woman next to her. She raises an eyebrow and points to the pokemon, more curious than concerned.
"Are you going to cut this rare pokemon up?"

Since her enlistment with Team Galactic, not one of her experiments had produced fruitful results. In fact, she probably hadn’t even successfully begun any of her proposed theses. So she decided to bend the rules a little bit. As a newly promoted Grunt, Athena had some access to majority of the facilities, but usage was a different matter. But being a computer genius had it’s perks. Hacking and unlocking the access code to the system’s main frame and getting the key to a certain specific room.
She couldn’t retrieve the codes during the day while the higher-ups were present, so the scientist to purposely stay late under the pretense of managing and doing a security check for the entire team. Being one of the very few people to have background in technology Athena voluntarily offered her skills, in exchange for a little leeway. So she set the auto
Which brought Athena back to where she was right now.
The laser room was a facility in the HQ that Athena had recently discovered, but wasn’t really surprised that Team Galactic had such a facility, nor did she question it’s presence. All that it mattered was that it was there and in lieu with her preparations, Athena could set her experiment in motion.
Now, while most people would feel bad about doing anything remotely harmful to their Pokemon, Athena did not feel the same way. This is how she expressed herself, through her experiments. It was her way of communication. She still didn’t understand why most rejected her help, but didn’t have the same problem with Mercury.
The Beldum was as unresponsive as they came. No matter how much she poked at it.
Since their relationship was like that, Athena decided to see what went through the Iron Ball Pokemon’s head. No amount of surgical tool was able to cut through the damn iron skin, but the laser would do the trick. It was rather risky, since she really didn’t want to break her experiment so early in the stage.
“Well, if you have no complaints or final words Mercury, we shall begin en suit!” She called out to her Pokemon, who’d been strapped down a bed, with the laser machine right in front of it.
“Bel..dum.” was all it said in a mechanical voice. Athena sighed, and rolled her eyes. She quickly input the start code for the machine and raised the power levels to initiate the machine. In spite of being the first time operating such machinery, Athena was surprisingly at home. The machine moved according to her calculations, and it’s arms were soon hovering right above the steel-type. Much to her interest, however, Beldum started to display some very intriguing behavior.
Was it anxiousness? Excitement?
It’s head, or rather the only eye it had, started to move back and forth, it’s entire body shaking. Just then, the room’s doors slid open. A woman entered the room and asked a question. Normally, Athena would welcome spectators, but as soon as she entered, Mercury ceased all activity.
“Really?!” She said exasperatedly but sighed and shook her head. Nothing would come from getting angry. Instead, she turned to face the newcomer, but only glancing her from the side, not really facing her.
“People rarely work this late at night. It’s rather rare to see someone wandering…” She turned off the machine, and faced the woman completely, looking her up and down. Athena was clearly irritated. “To answer your obvious question: Yes, I am about to cut up this ‘rare’ Pokemon, though there’s no actual proof it’s rare. Unfortunately, as it was showing some very interesting behaviour, we were rudely interrupted.”
Athena showed no signs of irritation in her voice, so instead, she chose her words very carefully.

The woman next to her obviously resented the intrusion, despite her words that seemed otherwise. She gives her only a brief side glance as she speaks. Sabrina is unperturbed by such actions, giving a grin as if to rub it in more. "Couldn't sleep." She shrugs, giving her the most straightforward answer.
"Well, it's definitely worth a pretty dime." She says, glancing down at the pokemon. Sabrina may not care about a pokemon very much, but she can see the value of it when it presents itself. If it were up to her, she'd just experiment on more common pokemon. They won't be missed.
"What kind of interesting behavior are you talking about?" Sabrina asks, stuffing her hands into her pockets. To say that she was intrigued was an understatement -- scientists are usually boring, but this experiment feels...different. Something in contrast to the usual science things that she finds so boring.
"Some type of emotion?"

Athena shook her head, and turned back to face the machine, hiding a smile. It was the simplest answer anyone had given. No unnecessary excuses, no attempts to joke around. She couldn’t argue with that so the scientist merely went back to her experiment, pressing a few buttons and pulling up the lever.
“Alright. Well, take a sit then, if it peaks your interest that much.” She had to restart the laser, since she had punched in the security lock again. It irked her how the security code changed every time after use. Athena went to another part of the room, where a computer lit up with her touch. The clicking of keys at impressive speeds show how the scientist was more than comfortable using technology.
The woman’s comment about the worth of Pokemon was brushed off rather easily. “ If my interests aligned with simply earning money, then I wouldn’t bother keeping any Pokemon at all. Though, I can see the appeal in selling Pokemon…” Her voice trailed away as she got to the difficult part in hacking back into the system. “ I decided to experiment on this Beldum for availability, and because it rarely reacts to anything I do. So I wanted to know what set it apart from my other test subjects…” She stopped talking, transferring over to the laser controls, inputting the codes once more.
“And yet…” She pressed the big red button, filling the room with the sound humming machinery. “Before you showed up, it started showing signs of restlessness.” Before activating the laser itself, Athena stood up from her chair and walked towards the dark skinned woman. They’d be rather close up to this point, a few inches away from each other.
“Athena Elder. Currently the only person in Team Galactic smart enough to either lead them to greatness, or cause their downfall. Aspiring scientist.” The scientist eyed her from below, then to her face. “ You must be Sabrina Townsend. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

"Sure." Sabrina murmurs, but stays standing. There are little places to sit, and standing offers her a better view, anyways. But she stays mindfully out of the way of the woman as Athena makes her way to another part of the room. The screen lights up, and she presses each button with precise dexterity. Technology has never particularly interested Sabrina, but she can respect those who are proficient with it.
"What where your other test subjects like?" Sabrina asks, casually leaning on the wall. The room suddenly hums. She hears the women approach her, yetshe does not move. Athena is so unnaturally close; so close that she can feel her breath as she speaks.
Athena Elder, she states. The name rings a bell, vague mentions of someone with no emotions. Sabrina quirks an eyebrow. A scientist. How fitting, especially in a situation like this. For all that Galactic has been credited to being cruel and unusual, Sabrina has never met someone that fits the role so well.
And well, someone here who actually knows her name.
Hearing Sabrina’s question, made Athena think all about the past attempts she had made on Pokemon experimentation, and shook her head. There were only a few times the scientist had been successful in gathering data. But these failures were not on her part. Her subjects would either run away… or like a few minutes ago, they’d get interrupted.
“Mostly scared.” Athena decided to answer, but only after stepping back and going back to the machine. She set the power level of the machine to medium and entered the activation code to initiate countdown. A mechanical voice began counting 10 backwards. “And perhaps… a little hesitant? Ungrateful shitheads they were, excuse my language.”
The voice finishes countdown and the machines starts to light up. Once again, the Beldum begun to twitch back and forth, whilst reciting it’s name over and over again. Athena actually smiled in delight in seeing this reaction. And this time, there’d be no interruptions.
“Haven’t you noticed, my dear Sabrina?” She addressed the rocket recruit, but her eyes glued to her soon decapitated Beldum. “ Team Galactic is in complete disarray at the moment. I was reviewing reports the other dayꟷ which is how I know youꟷand according to my analysis, the current Team Galactic has no drive whatsoever. No purpose, no big projects.”
Just then, as the laser was about to reach the struggling Beldum, the entire room was suddenly surrounded by a bright light. Even Athena was surprised. Could it be…?
The sound metal being torn echoed through the entire room. When the light subsided, a Metang was standing in place where Mercury was strapped, the bed broken apart, and the laser machine partially damaged.
“What in Arceus’ name did just…?”
Her Beldum had just evolved into a Metang, and used its newly learned move, Psychic, to destroy its confines. Athena’s face face went from surprised, to a rather sharp expression. Athena did not say anything. All she did was grab the computer, not caring about how heavy it was, or whether the plug was torn away. She heaved it all the way to where Metang was floating just dandy, seemingly happy, and with a furious yell, she smashed the computer unto it’s head… or body.
“And just who told you to evolve, and break the equipment? YOU LOUSY PIECE OF MACHINERY?!!”

Sabrina can't help but laugh at how the scientist replied. "You say that as if those pokemon should be grateful for their mutilations." She snickers, knowing full well that Athena just might believe it. She reckons that social conventions weren't exactly her strong suit, especially from the interactions thus far.
It proves to be an interesting night thus far.
The countdown decreases, all the way to zero, and the machines hum in response. Sabrina watches with detached curiosity as the Beldum starts shaking in what she assumed to be fear and anticipation.
She draws her eyes to the scientist when she talks again, raising an eyebrow at such a patronizing tone. Blissfully unaware. "Haven't you heard?" She murmurs, more quietly than usual, "They're planning a coup."
Sabrina keeps her secrets under lock and key, but she doubts that Athena would care much about it. And there's a certain feeling that comes with illegally using machinery in Galactic base, a strange kinship in being awake when everyone is asleep.
Sabrina shuts her eyes closed when the room's illuminated by a bright light. When it fades, she can hear screeching metal, machinery damaged by the new pokemon. Sabrina stares at it in a mixture of slight shock, and it deepens when Athena suddenly rips a computer from its confines and throws it at her pokemon.
It was probably time to intervene.
"Woah woah, calm down." She says, holding up her hands. She'd never thought that Athena's expression would change from her deadpan look, but now it seemed as if she's angry. Very angry. "Isn't this interesting?" Sabrina lilts, trying to reason with her.
"Your Beldum evolved in response to it's fear and incoming danger."
Athena was seething with rage, but it was justifiable.
The equipment she had been using was without consent of higher-ups, and now that it was broken, the evidence would easily trace them back. Even worse, she had a witness right there and then. Said witness was now attempting to get her to calm down by making her see how full the glass was, instead of the other way around. But Athena never saw either side, and instead, always asked herself, why?
Why a glass? Why was it full or empty?
Most fools limited themselves to these choices. It was different this time around, though.
“I am overwhelmed with joy.” she said dryly. “ But this does not change the fact that Mercury has clearly ruined and defied the experiment by doings, also landing my whole career in jeopardy.” After much explanation, Athena did calm down a bit and let rationality take it’s rightful place in her cranium. “I’m hoping that coup happens fast and soon.”
It was good that Sabrina was not affected in the slightest by Athena’s wit and tendency of looking down on people, and could even match it herself. There were hardly any people she interacted nowadays who stood up like Sabrina did. “There only so many admins who could ever stage such a thing…” she commented lightly while placing the computer down and ordering Mercury to place it back where it came from.
“ Though I will say it to you once, and only once. “ Athena came up to Sabrina and came close, but not too much, with her arms crossed. “ Everyone has a responsibility to the world we live in. Which is why my Pokemon, and everyone else, should be grateful to be contributed to science. “ Athena would leave time for Sabrina to answer, but whether or not Sabrina cared to answer, she recalled Metang and looked at the entire room for any physical evidence they might leave behind.
Then, she quickly shut down the machine, and quickly hacked into the main server to delete her presence in the logs. This way they’d have a hard time tracing her back. “We should leave quickly, and continue this elsewhere.”
